Charlotte Douglas International Airport is an in and the primary airport for commercial and military use in the located roughly six miles from the city’s central business district. The airport is owned by the City of Charlotte and operated by the city’s aviation department. Established in 1935 as Charlotte Municipal Airport, the airport was renamed in 1954 for , who was mayor of Charlotte when the airport was first built. It took its present name in 1982, and today, the airport covers 5,558 acres of land.
Charlotte is a for , and the airlines operates the vast majority of CLT’s international flights as well. As of 2020, American serves 149 destinations across the Americas and Europe and operates over 700 daily flights out of Charlotte. American additionally operates a significant secondary maintenance center at Charlotte.

It was the sixth-busiest airport in the world ranked by aircraft movements. The airport has four runways and one passenger terminal with 115 gates divided between five concourses. A joint commercial-civil-military facility, the airport is home to the Charlotte Air National Guard Base and its host unit, the 145th Airlift Wing of the , located in a military containment area on the east side of the airport.

At least 258 flights were canceled early Monday morning, accounting for 9% of the airline’s operations for the day.
As of 6:45 a.m., O’Hare Airport reported a total of 61 cancellations, 40 of which were flights operated by American. Another 14 American flights were reporting delays.
The airline’s other major hubs, including Charlotte, Phoenix and Miami, also reported a number of cancellations.
The problems have been plaguing American since Friday, when it canceled 342 flights and delayed an additional 737 flights. On Saturday, the airline canceled nearly 460 flights or 17% of its mainline schedule.
According to American, most of the customers impacted by the flight cancellations are being rebooked the same day.
The airline said that team members anticipate getting through this irregular operational period “quickly with the start of a new month.”
American isn’t the only airline to report recent mass cancellations as Southwest Airlines encountered issues of its own just weeks ago. Southwest canceled more than 2,000 flights over the weekend of Oct. 9-10.

Scheduled passenger service began in 1955, but growth was slow at first. Although Chicago had invested over $25 million in O’Hare, remained the world’s busiest airport and airlines were reluctant to move until highway access and other improvements were completed. The April 1957 listed 36 weekday departures from the airport, while Midway coped with 414. Improvements began to attract the airlines: O’Hare’s first dedicated international terminal opened in August 1958, and by April 1959 the airport had expanded to 7,200 acres with new hangars, terminals, parking and other facilities. The link to downtown Chicago, now known as the , was completed in 1960. And new Terminals 2 and 3, designed by , opened on January 1, 1962.

With the additional seats and more amenities, we suspect that well see even stronger performance in our market.

Late 1960s To 1: Before Deregulation
A major renovation project in the late 1960s expanded the facility. Eastern opened a unit terminal in 1967, replacing the old west pier. This new facility had eight dedicated gates for Eastern, each with its own departure lounge, snack bar and separate baggage claim space. Eastern passengers continued to check in at the main terminal.
In 1969, a new enclosed concourse was built parallel to the center pier. When it was completed, Piedmont, Eastern, and Delta moved in and the old center pier was demolished. The new concourse had separate departure lounges, restrooms and an enlarged baggage claim area. United’s flights continued to use the east pier, with an enclosed holding room added for waiting passengers. Eastern added two more gates to the end of its west concourse in 1973.
In April 1975, the airport had 97 weekday departures to 32 destinations on seven airlines.

Attempts To Block The Merger
On August 13, 2013, the , along with attorneys general from the District of Columbia, Arizona , Florida, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas , and Virginia filed a lawsuit seeking to block the merger, arguing that it would mean less competition and higher prices. American Airlines and US Airways both said that they would fight against the lawsuit and defend their merger. In early October 2013, the Attorney General of Texas quit the anti-trust lawsuit.
The Department of Justice reached a settlement on November 12, 2013, requiring the merged airline to give up or gates in 7 major airports. Under the deal, the new American was required to sell 104 slots at and 34 slots at . It was also required to sell gates at , , , and . Some of the slots were expected to be sold to low-cost carriers such as and .
A private antitrust suit, filed by a group of 40 passengers and travel agents, also sought to block the merger.
