Amtraks Southwest Chief To Reduce Service Through Kansas
NEWTON, Kan. Amtrak riders in Kansas will encounter reduced service starting in October as part of the rail passenger services nationwide cutback in routes because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Southwest Chief, which runs through Kansas from Chicago to Los Angeles, will reduce its service beginning Oct. 12, Amtrak said on its website. Nearly every Amtrak route across the country has been or will be reduced because of a dramatic drop in passengers during the pandemic, the company said.
Currently, the Southwest Chief operates seven days a week.
After Oct. 12, the Southwest Chief will leave Chicago on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. The train will leave Los Angeles on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The train currently serves Lawrence, Topeka, Newton, Hutchinson, Dodge City and Garden City.
Amtrak said it hoped to restore all services by June 30, 2021.

Taking The Metro Rail Around Los Angeles
The Metro Rail, L.A.’s subway system, has several lines that lead into and out of Union Station. The most popular lines that take you to landmarks, attractions, and popular neighborhoods throughout the city are the Red Line and the Gold Line. The Red Line goes to locations throughout Downtown L.A., Hollywood, and the Valley. The Gold Line goes to Pasadena and East Los Angeles, through historic and trendy neighborhoods like Highland Park or the Arts District.
In addition to the Metro Rail, five lines of Metrolink passenger trains can also take you to nearby Ventura County, Antelope Valley, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange County, from Union Station.

East Coast: The Adirondack
The general consensus for the best of the scenic Amtrak routes in the east is service on the Adirondack, between New York and Montreal. The 11-hour day trip operates daily in both directions, and gives you a double-header of great views: It travels along the east bank of Hudson River between New York and Albany, where you pass the Palisades, West Point, and wooded hills. It also travels along the West bank of Lake Champlain, a popular summer activity lake-valley area nestled between the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains.
The northbound trip is daylight through the scenic areas throughout the year. The southbound trip sees more daylight in summer in winter you hit the Hudson valley after dark. In the fall foliage season, Amtrak usually adds a dome car to the train between Albany and Montreal, which operates every other day in each direction. And if you want off before getting to Canada, you can still see all the highlights by starting or ending your trip at Rouses Point, in New York.

A couple of years ago we flew in to Los Angeles from Rarotonga, on the way to Boston to see our American cousins.It seemed like a wasted opportunity to cross the entire North American continent and not see anything of it besides distant views of the ground from an airplane window or no views at all if youre sitting in an aisle seat. So we took the train.
The Amtrak Southwest Chief stops in Albuquerque, New Mexico on the way from Los Angeles to Chicago.
We used the Amtrak website to book a bedroom on the Southwest Chief for the slightly- less-than-two-day journey to Chicago then after a few days in the Windy City onward to Boston on the Lake Shore Limited.I love websites like Amtraks. Its a mine of information about routes, times, accommodation, meals and more. You get all the excitement of finding out whats available long before you make reservations so it extends the fun of travelling and gives you something to look forward to.Im talking about holidays here. If youre travelling on business, you probably have to get from A to B quickly. Tough luck.For the rest of us the poem Leisure by William Henry Davies sums it up. Nous embarquons donc dans le Southwest Chief Train pour un peu plus de 40 heures de voyage, à Chicago, pays des gratte-ciels, pour nous réveiller à Los Angeles, face à locéan.Cest un peu lOrient Express des États-Unis, dans un tout autre genre mais avec son lot daventure.
Plusieurs trajets permettent de rejoindre la Californie depuis Chicago. Nous avons opté pour lun des plus « courts » car nous devions rejoindre des amis à San Diego. Cela faisait longtemps que nous avions envie de traverser ainsi les États-Unis, enfin une partie. Mais par manque de temps cela ne sétait jamais fait.Avec plus de 3640km parcourus, notre train a donc traversé les états de lIllinois, le Missouri, le Kansas, le Colorado, le Nouveau Mexique et lArizona pour finalement arriver en Californie.
Réveil en Californie aux abords de Los Angeles
Dautres lignes passent notamment par le nord avec le trajet de la très photogénique Zéphyr Line ou alors totalement par le sud en longeant le Mexique. Mais pour ce dernier, selon les parents de nos amis, la route est mooooortellement ennuyeuse avec le désert à perte de vue Il nous conviendra un jour de nous faire notre propre opinion
Attention, les prix augmentent en été et il vaut mieux penser à réserver en avance. Dans notre cas, en juin, nous avons pris les billets 3 semaines avant, sans aucun problème. Mais dautres voyageurs, habitués du train, nous ont mis en garde sur le pic daffluence lors des vacances dété.
