Definitions In United States
In the United States, trauma centers are ranked by the or local state governments, from Level I to Level III . The different levels refer to the types of resources available in a trauma center and the number of patients admitted yearly. These are categories that define national standards for trauma care in . Level I and Level II designations are also given adult or designations. Additionally, some states have their own trauma-center rankings separate from the ACS. These levels may range from Level I to Level IV. Some hospitals are less-formally designated Level V.
The ACS does not officially designate hospitals as trauma centers. Numerous U.S. hospitals that are not verified by ACS claim trauma center designation. Most states have legislation that determines the process for designation of trauma centers within that state. The ACS describes this responsibility as “a geopolitical process by which empowered entities, government or otherwise, are authorized to designate.” The ACS’s self-appointed mission is limited to confirming and reporting on any given hospital’s ability to comply with the ACS standard of care known as Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient.
Note that a trauma center is a hospital that is designated by a state or local authority or is verified by the American College of Surgeons.

New Tool Predicts Risk Of Hospital Readmission For Children Before Discharge
Boosts efforts to reduce likelihood of readmission
Readily available electronic health record data can be used to reliably identify readmission risk for children of all ages while they are still in the hospital, according to a study from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Childrens Hospital of Chicago published in the journal JAMA Network Open. The newly developed and validated tool will be key in efforts to reduce hospitalizations within 30 days of discharge, which also should help free up scarce pediatric hospital beds.
Although hospital readmissions are a quality metric, until now we have not had a comprehensive and easily applicable tool to predict pediatric readmission risk prior to discharge, said lead author Denise M. Goodman, MD, MS, Critical Care physician at Lurie Childrens and Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Knowing which children are most likely to need another hospitalization soon after their initial stay allows us to be proactive and better focus discharge planning to mitigate high risk of readmission.
A significant strength of our prediction models is that they were designed to be implemented in the EHR during the hospital stay and to change with clinical circumstances, said Dr. Goodman. Readmission risk can be recalculated daily, which allows us the opportunity to tailor discharge planning in real time.
Dimension Inx And Lurie Childrens Hospital Of Chicago Awarded Joint Nih Grant To Expand Fertility Restoration Options
Exploratory collaboration will focus on developing strategies using 3-D printed bioscaffolds to support the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles to produce fertilizable eggs
Dimension Inx, a regenerative biomaterials company, and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Childrens Hospital of Chicago have been jointly awarded an NIH Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant. The grant focuses on uncovering a novel approach to in vitro growth and maturation of ovarian follicles. Together, Dimension Inx and Lurie Childrens will use the funding to further explore the development of a more accessible and affordable infertility preservation intervention, one particularly useful in the emerging field of oncofertility.
Infertility is a significant and growing global health problem, with estimates suggesting more than 186 million individuals live with infertility worldwide. While assistive reproductive technologies methods like IVF have been available for over four decades, these technologies remain largely inaccessible and unaffordable.
They are also not a good fit for certain patients, such as women who have undergone cancer treatments or survived childhood cancer. These women are often at increased risk of infertility and hormone-based issues that affect many organs.
As part of this current grant, researchers at Lurie Childrens will conduct biological studies evaluating the growth and maturation of follicles on Dimension Inxs scaffolds.
