Susannah Scaroni Makes Stunning Comeback After Training Accident Uses Former Marathon Champ’s Equipment In First

Three-time Paralympian Susannah Scaroni defeated defending champion and the most decorated athlete in Bank of America Chicago Marathon history, Tatyana McFadden, on Sunday, winning the the 2022 race by a landslide to mark her first victory in the Windy City.

This year’s race marks Scaroni’s fourth appearance at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, where she has previously reached the podium, but never been at the top.

Scaroni’s victory was made even sweeter when it was revealed she competed using her former teammate, three-time Chicago Marathon winner and NBC 5 analyst Amanda McGrory’s equipment.

Scaroni, who trains at the University of Illinois, was on a training run just two weeks after the Tokyo Paralympic Games last year when she was struck by a vehicle in Champaign.

The force of the impact not only caused a burst fracture to her T8 vertebrae, but also completely destroyed her racing chair.

“It truly gave me a new perspective… I have a new appreciation to be alive and so I think about that constantly now and everything’s a celebration and an opportunity and that’s translated into my career,” she told NBC Chicago at the finish line.

During Sundays broadcast, McGrory revealed that when she retired from competitive racing last year, there was only one person who should get her racing gear: Scaroni.

Race Organizers Claimed They Had To Change The Course At The Last Minute For Safety Reasons And Didn’t Tell Participants

Thousands of runners seemed to run personal bests at the 2022 HOKA Chicago Half Marathon last Sunday, but it turns out that they didnt actually run the half-marathon distance, as the race was found to be one kilometre short. Many runners took to the events social media page, commenting that their Strava uploads were well short of the 21.1 km distance, which is when organizers admitted the course was short.

One runner wrote: It was a great race, but I was about a half mile short?!? I feel the turnaround was too soon. I knew something was up when I passed the nine-mile marker, and I was only at 8.5my GPS had matched up perfectly with the markers until then.

Another runner commented: Everybody I know who did this race on my Strava got 12.64 miles. things a tad short today?

Other runners started replying to the messages, voicing their frustration with the lack of communication from the race.

Organizers replied by saying the runners were correct. Our primary goal always is to deliver a safe and positive experience for all participants. A last-minute course change was implemented due to unforeseen circumstances in partnership with the city of Chicago. The impact of this change was a reduction in the overall course distance. We apologize for any inconvenience as we chose to prioritize athlete safety.

The HOKA Chicago Half Marathon is unaffiliated with the upcoming Bank of America Chicago Marathon on Oct. 9, or with the Bank of America 13.1.

Race Recap: Inaugural Bank Of America Chicago 131

On Sunday, June 5, 2022, the Chicago running community celebrated a brand-new half marathon. Initially announced in winter of the year everything got cancelled, the long-awaited Bank of America Chicago 13.1 put on a great event. Unlike most races that focus on Chicagos lakefront, the new race explores the incredible greenspaces and boulevards of the West Side. The race began and ended in Garfield Park in front of its amazing Spanish Baroque Revival fieldhouse. After a half circuit of the park, runners hit the boulevards north to Humboldt Park where a tour around Luis Munoz Marin Drive awaited. Returning to Garfield Park for the halfway mark, the course continued south to Douglass Park before returning north to the finish.

The race organizers worked with many of the citys running clubs to ensure a large number of cheer stations along the route and hydration sponsor Nuun provided aid stations every mile. The layout of the course ensured that most participants had the opportunity to see the small but powerful elite field in action. This is extremely motivating for an age grouper like me.

The womens wheelchair division was won by Susannah Scaroni, and the mens by four-time Chicago Marathon winner Daniel Romanchuk. The mens open division was won by John Dressel who set a PB of 1:02.17. Carrie Verdon won the womens open and stated that she is hoping to crack the podium at the Chicago Marathon this fall. The non-binary division was taken by Cynthia Kmak.

Chicago Marathon

On Sunday, June 5, thousands of runners gathered on the citys West Side for the inaugural Bank of America Chicago 13.1, a world-class running event and the newest addition to Chicagos iconic racing portfolio.

Under near-perfect conditions, participants assembled in Garfield Park to kick off a 13.1-mile tour of three of Chicagos oldest and most beautiful parks, traversing Humboldt and Douglass Parks and the surrounding boulevards and communities. A Race Day Festival held around the Garfield Park Gold Dome Field House served as an anchor for the days events, bringing together residents and visitors alike for a morning of entertainment, health and wellness activities, and opportunities for them to connect in the heart of the community.

The half marathon event, introduced in the fall of 2019 and delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, was conceived with a vision to reimagine running events in Chicago, extending the citys racing portfolio beyond the lakefront and celebrating the culture, diversity, and community that runs deep on Chicagos West Side. For more than four decades, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon has been instrumental in showcasing the beauty of Chicago while serving as a driver of economic activity the team behind the marathon saw the Chicago 13.1 as a key opportunity to extend that impact to another corner of Chicago.
