Chicagos 24 Best New Notable And Nostalgic Corned Beef Sandwiches

Thank you for supporting our journalism. This article is available exclusively for our subscribers, who help fund our work at the Chicago Tribune.

You may have noticed a lot has changed on the corned beef beat since I started covering what happened to the big Jewish delis in Chicago in 2018.

I ranked the 17 best corned beef sandwiches from 31 restaurants Id visited by then the following year. By 2020, most remained open for takeout on St. Patricks Day, despite the first pandemic dining room closure mandate, which took effect the night before.

Last year, you could get 24 great corned beef sandwiches across the city and suburbs, and even a free sandwich from Mannys, then running its unsuccessful customer mask challenge.

This year, weve seen more changes on the corned beef beat. Boeufhaus, which ranked in first place for best corned sandwich, has finally reopened in the Humboldt Park neighborhood after a two-year pandemic closure, but hasnt added corned beef sandwiches back to its menu. ChiTown Sandwich Club seems to have closed in Lakeview East. City Mouse is long gone, along with the whole Ace Hotel in the West Loop. Harringtons is back, but with catering only from a new location in Portage Park. Perrys Deli has given up its last vestige at the Bacci Pizzeria in the Loop. Rye Deli & Drink in Greektown has temporarily closed, promising a new menu this spring.

The Best Method For Making Reuben Sandwiches At Home

We have a grilled-cheese philosophy here at Serious Eats, which is that both sides of each slice of bread should be toasted to maximize the crunch against the soft melted cheese. In some cases, this rule works for melts, which is what a Reuben technically is. But with the Reuben, I prefer to revert to single-side toasting, because I like the inner surfaces of the bread in a Reuben to be slightly steamed and tender, the whole thing partially fusing together.

One key step no matter what is to pre-heat both the corned beef and the sauerkraut, so that you’re not trying to warm through the entire jam-packed sandwich and instead are just trying to melt the cheese and toast the bread. The hot meat and kraut help get that cheese melted faster, too, so there’s no risk you’ll have unmelted cheese in the centera Reuben travesty, if ever there was one.

I use a restaurant trick for preheating the corned beef while keeping it tender and juicy, which is to seal the meat in a container or package with a little bit of water and stick it in a warm oven aluminum foil works just dandy as the package. The water generates steam, which, trapped in the foil, helps keep the meat from drying out. The kraut, meanwhile, I fry in butter, deepening its flavor and driving off any lingering wateriness.

Just remember: Don’t serve these to any friends who keep kosher.

These flavorful and delicious sandwiches are perfect any day of the week. You can enjoy them for St. Patricks day, to host a party, or game day. You will need:

Best Corned Beef And Cabbage In Chicago

It may be the one time of the year you get an actual longing for salt-cured beef product that’s boiled for hours – with cabbage, no less. Corned beef and cabbage can easily become a dreary, dark pink pad of matter when attempted by the neighborhood diner on the St. Paddy’s Day bandwagon. Order the Irish dinner at any of these Chicagoland spots to pin the shillelagh at a solid ten on the shamrock meter.

Chief O’Neill’s Pub

There are Paddy O’ Whatevers and Mother Murphy’s Faux Irish Kitchens dotting the neighborhoods but Chief O’Neill’s is the place that makes even Irish expats feel like they’re back home. Francis O’Neill, born in County Cork and Chicago’s Police Superintendent from 1901-05, has been called “the greatest individual influence on the evolution of Irish traditional dance music in the 20th century.” His “O’Neill’s Music of Ireland” was the largest collection of Irish music ever printed. He also had ten kids who were ostensibly nourished by both tunes and stews. You’ll find McKinney’s Famous Corned Beef, slow-cooked, house cured corned beef with braised cabbage, carrots and baby red potatoes, on the menu every day, under Emerald Isle Favorites and regulars rave about the Guinness & Cheddar soup. There are Sunday Sessions weekly and the weekend brunch buffet impresses even the most jaded weekend diners.

My Top 3 Favorite Places In Chicago To Get Corned Beef Sandwiches On St Patrick’s Day

The Best Jewish Delis In America, Ranked By Foursquare

Everyone knows as a Chicagoan there are three things that make a great St. Patrick’s day in Chicago.

  • Painting the Chicago River Green
  • Corned beef Sandwiches
  • I am going to give you my Top 3 picks for the best places to go and get a corned beef sandwich this St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago and Suburbs.

The Corned Beef Factory Sandwich Shop – 1016 W Lake St Chicago, IL 60607

The sandwiches here are massive and the corned beef is sliced extra thin. The corned beef is always tender and not fried and the flavors are some of the best-corned beef you can get in Chicago. I also want to add out of the three delis I am listing that this place has the most East Coast deli vibe out of them all.

The Onion Roll – 6935 North Ave Oak Park, IL 60302

This deli has been in business for over 50 years, so they must be doing something right. They make all types of specialty sandwiches, but my favorite is their corned beef. The sandwiches are huge and the amount of corned beef they put into their sandwiches is obscene. The meat is always moist and delicious every time I have ordered. The staff is always friendly and if you are in the mood for something other than a typical sandwich have them put it on one of their huge and delicious homemade bagels. This deli also offers all your favorite Jewish deli favorites like Matzo ball soup and chopped liver. Dont forget to try their Lox.

Mannys Cafeteria and Delicatessen – 1141 S Jefferson St Chicago, IL 60607
