Prairie Landing Golf Club
Designed by famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., the fairways of this course are always in exceptional condition. It is one of the most challenging courses you will come across in Chicago, says Golf Digest. This is due to the many contours and the strategically placed bunker that will keep you on your toes. It is often windy on this course, which adds a further challenge to play. Other elements of the course that you will need to negotiate are the tall grass, the wetlands, and the fast sloping greens. These challenges only add to the fun of a round of golf on this course.
Heatherridge Golf Course Par 35 / 347 / 110
Having been opened in 1975, HeatherRidge Golf Course is now in its 46th season of operation. The mature parkland motif is further augmented with flowing creeks and ponds that come into play on seven of the nine holes. The positioning of these creeks and ponds, along with the routing distances require the golf skills of accuracy and length at HeatherRidge.
HeatherRidge Golf Club 8th Hole
Tucked inside the Heather Ridge community, HeatherRidge Golf Course previously had been thought of as a hidden gem, but with the help of modern GPS mapping and directions, HeatherRidge GC is now easily located.

Harborside International Starboard & Port Courses Chicago
Harborside International takes a unique concept and perfects it! Designer Dick Nugent was charged with designing two golf courses on one property with a similar look, feel, and playability rating. Harborsides Port Course, which opened for play in 1995, features the par-3 15th hole, known for a massive bunker in the shape of an anchor. One year later, The Starboard Course opened and is currently ranked the third-finest course in Illinois according to Golf Week Magazine.
Both courses at Harborside International feature amazing views of downtown Chicago, even though the course is a good 15 miles from the citys epicenter. The course is even closer to Guaranteed Rate Field, home of the Chicago White Sox. Harborside International is buoyed by a 57-acre practice facility that includes separate areas for chipping, pitching, and sand play, and a large clock for putting drills.
Stonewall Orchard Golf Club Grayslake
The northern suburbs are filled with outstanding courses , but my personal favorite is Stonewall Orchard Golf Club, a thoughtful Arthur Hills design. The 7,124-yard, par-72 layout is so highly thought of by the USGA that they have held four U.S. Open Qualifiers here between 2003 and 2015.
If getting away from it all is your number-one golf goal, then Stonewall Orchards naturalness is to be coveted. More than 65,000 fully mature pine and oak trees combine with acres of rolling hills and wetlands to form a serene golf experience that is unmatched. Stonewall Orchard is what I like to call a public country club, based upon their splendid amenities and immaculate course conditions.

Tam Oshanter Golf Course Par 33 / 316 / 106
Tam OShanter Golf Course in Niles is the remainder of an older, larger course, which along with its owner George S. May, had more influence in shaping the future of golf tournaments, golf viewing, golf in general in Chicago than any other course in our area.
Tam OShanter Country Club was designed in 1925 by C.D. Wagstaff it was a private club. Unfortunately, in 1936, a fire destroyed the clubhouse of the Tam OShanter CC and bankrupted the owners. Stepping in that year, George S. May acquired a controlling interest in the golf club and over the next several years invested more than $500,000 to renovate and operate the facility.
A self-made entrepreneur, in 1941 May became involved in sponsoring golf tournaments. Dissatisfied with his experience attending the 1940 U.S. Open held at Clevelands Canterbury Country Club, May shocked the golf world by announcing he would sponsor a new tournament in 1941, the Tam OShanter Open, offering the largest purse in professional golf: $15,000.
Tam OShanter Golf Course 6th Hole
George S. May died of a heart attack while at his beloved Tam OShanter club on March 12, 1962 the club continued to operate until it was purchased by a developer in the early 1970s. It was in 1973 that Niles Park District obtained the nine-hole portion of the course and reopened the course in 1974, with William J. Spear as architect.

Mistwood Golf Club Romeoville
Expertly renovated by Ray Hearn between 2011-2013, Mistwood Golf Club is a spectacular Scottish-inspired course in the southwestern Chicago suburb of Romeoville. The three-year renovation project added 19 Scottish-style sod wall bunkers that give a distinctive style to the 7,005 yard, par-72 layout. Six holes play around a 65-acre lake and elicit stunning visuals and shot values throughout. The par-3 14th demands a near 200-yard downhill shot over water while the par-5 15th is a 90-degree dogleg left with water running down the entire left side.
Their year-round Performance Center is one the Midwests finest and is run by eight full-time golf professionals. If a technology has been invented to help your game, its a safe bet Mistwoods Performance Center has it. Finally, their 26,000-square-foot clubhouse is an ideal location for weddings, banquets, and corporate functions.

Sydney R Marovitz Golf Course Par 36 / 355 / 127
Designed by golf course architect Edward B. Dearie, Jr., Waveland Golf Course opened in 1932, and in 1991 was renamed Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course, honoring the longtime Chicago Park District board member and commissioner emeritus.
Location, location, location the credo of real estate agents can be applied to 9-hole golf courses as well, and Marovitzs single position on the map marvelously fills the threefold desires of location.
Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course
First, the Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course is located well within the city limits of Chicago . The 9-hole course is situated on prime property on the shore of Lake Michigan in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. And, the course is easily accessible by many means of transportation Lake Shore Drive for motor traffic, bike paths along the lakefront, and by CTA public bus routes.
Accuracy for drives and approach shots is paramount at Marovitz, as this parkland style layout contains many large, mature trees often flanking both sides of the fairway. And, every green on the course has at least two bunkers that protect the surface on approach shots. On a positive note, all holes run parallel to Lake Michigan, that is north and south, so it is easier to follow the flight of the ball without interference of blinding sunlight. Three sets of tees can accommodate most skill levels.
As a public golf course with heavy demand, pace of play can become an issue.
Cog Hill Golf & Country Club
According to Chicago Golf the best golf course in Chicago is the Cog Hill Golf & Country Club. Therefore, if you only play at one course during your visit to Chicago, then this is the one that you should choose. Opened in 1927, this club is home to four 18-hole championship golf courses, each of which has won awards and each offering a different playing experience and challenges. This means that you have plenty of playing options if you visit this club. The course was originally designed by Dubsdred-Dick Wilson, although it was redesigned by Rees Jones in 2008.

Vernon Hills Golf Course Par 34 / 345 / 124
Back in 1957 developers Barney Loeb and Quinn Hogan bought 120 acres south of Route 45 and east of Butterfield Road near the small town of Indian Creek for $60,000. They soon began selling pre-fab homes, built a motel, a restaurant, and an 18-hole golf course called Tally Ho Country Club.
Tally Ho CC existed for about twenty years, but ultimately closed with part of the land partitioned and sold as homesites while the remaining land and old Tally Ho CC clubhouse was donated to the established and incorporated Village of Vernon Hills.

Now owned by the village, this remaining land was transformed into the 9-hole Vernon Hills Golf Course. Downers Grove Golf Course Par 36 / 362 / 133
One location, several name changes, and a gaggle of golf history. Were referring to 2420 Haddow Avenue in Downers Grove, the current site of Downers Grove Golf Course. This location holds a significant place in American golf history as it was this site in 1892 that the original Chicago Golf Club chose to build their 9-hole golf course. Sixty acres of a farm owned by a Scottish immigrant was purchased for $300 and a 9-hole course was quickly constructed. Readied for play in the late spring of 1892, it became Americas first golf course west of the Allegheny mountain range.
When the inaugural season had ended, the Chicago Golf Club members decided to add nine more holes to the course. Therefore, in 1893, the first eighteen- hole golf course in the United States was established on this site. This golf club was also one of the five founding clubs of the United States Golf Association in 1895.
Downers Grove Golf Club 3rd Hole
Later in 1895, Chicago Golf Club members had become so taken with the sport that they decided to build a new eighteen-hole golf course on a larger property located in Wheaton, Illinois. After the Chicago Golf Club members moved to Wheaton, the Downers Grove site reverted back to 9 holes.
A driving range with 24 permanent and turf hitting stations, a large practice putting green, sand trap and chipping area are available for pre-round warm up or practice sessions.
Walk the same grounds where Americas golfing ancestors first walked.

Best Value Golf Courses In Chicago
Chicago, like any big city, can be pricey. It doesnt matter where you go for entertainment out to eat, to watch a game, exploring a museum every experience can feel expensive. Fortunately, playing golf doesnt have to be that way. The game offers a variety of courses that can make it affordable for anybody to play. Chicago has its share of fancy private clubs Shoreacres, Butler National, Black Sheep, Chicago Golf Club, Cog Hill, The Glen Club, etc. Theyre all great experiences and special treats once in a while.
But the majority of golfers want value, feeling like theyre recreational dollars go a little further. Thats where dozens of lesser known but perfectly able and enjoyable courses fit the bill. Municipal golf which offers some of the best value golf courses in Chicago is a good place to start. Many suburbs within driving distance of downtown offer something for residents and better rates for the general public. The Forest Preserve courses of Cook County tend to be shorter and easier, important traits of some of the best value golf courses in Chicago. The Chick Evans Golf Course in Morton Grove is even shorter . The Chicago River flows through its midsection. Golfers can rent GolfBoards at both courses to spice up their round.
