Chicago’s Best Comfort Food: Diner Grill

BY Megy Karydes

Its often a conundrum: Chicago locals and visitors leave a concert or the theater and are starving. What places to hit when it seems everyone is sleeping? Actually, there are a ton of restaurants throughout the city that cater to night owls with full-blown meals.

In the mood to share? Tapas are always a good bet when you want something but not an entire meal to yourself. Café Iberico off the Mag Mile or Café Ba-Ba-Reeba! are open late and usually can accommodate larger groups. On the Magnificent Mile and just a bit south is Mercat a la Planxa.

Since Chicago is known for its pizza, you cant go wrong with Piece Pizza or Pequods for gooey goodness that often hits the spot late at night.

For more complete meal options, check out Longman and Eagle in Logan Square, Sunda in River North or Coast Sushi in Bucktown. Both Longman and Eagle and Sunda also have full bars so you can enjoy a cocktail with your meal. Its BYOB at this Coast Sushi location so plan accordingly.

If you feel like watching some salsa dancing while enjoying your meal, head to Nacional 27.

Chicago is always open way past many peoples bedtimes to serve the late night crowd.

/10 New York City: Craving Curry In A Hurry

A post shared by Jay Menon

Its known as the City That Never Sleeps, so New York is an obvious late-night food city. Whether reveling late or rising early, New Yorkers and travelers have a lot of all-day eating options beyond the giant, thin-crust pizza slices for which the late-night food scene is famous. Pak Punjabi Deli & Grocery Smoke Shop, two blocks north of the 2nd Ave subway station, is long in the name and short on fuss. It combines two things New Yorkers love: a convenient bodega and a hearty deli menu. Open all night, this unassuming eatery lets late-night eaters takeaway curries and biriyanis any hour, plus grab some necessities for home. Its a deliciously quintessential and local New York experience tucked into a convenience store.

DC is a commuter city, which means most restaurants close up shop early. But look around and you’ll find some exceptions for quality meals beyond giant slices of greasy pizza. For the night owl who wants something more, here are ten of our favorite spots in DC to grab a meal after midnight. Some are classic standbys, others post-shift industry favorites, and a few are restaurants with late night menus that may surprise you.

This speakeasy in Chinatown is hidden inside of Moon Palace Express, behind it’s kitchen door. The food menu is short, but does have some highlights, like zesty mapo fries and a pork cutlet sandwich with tonkatsu sauceboth of which go great with one of their unique cocktails like a bold-flavored Old Fashioned made with Chinese five-spice. Upbeat hip-hop music makes the place feel energetic, but its still relaxed enough to chill at the bar or share snacks on their comfy couches without worrying about drunk table dancers.

Pub Grub And A Killer Seafood Platter: Old Ebbitt Grill

Just steps from the White House, Old Ebbitt Grill is an old DC favorite. A tavern with an expansive, but familiar menu of American food, Old Ebbitt is a place where you’re just as likely to see a family with small children as politicians and lobbyists. That said, one of the best things about Old Ebbitt is the late night happy hour.

The abbreviated happy hour menu includes dishes like grilled pizza and fried calamari, but the real draw is the half-priced raw bar. A half dozen oyster goes for $8.50 and a dozen for $15 or you can have crab claws or a lobster cocktail. If you’re up for a real challenge, the Orca Platter consists of a lobster, six crab claws, six clams, 24 oysters, and 12 shrimp. Take one of these down at 2 a.m. and that’s likely to be a night you’ll remember for a while.

Open until: Late night happy hour available 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday and Monday 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Spicy Korean Fire Chicken Is Chicago’s Best Late-Night Dish K-Town

New Big Wong is a perennial industry favorite for post-shift restaurant and bar crews. Open late enough to qualify as early morning, it’s constantly home to bleary eyed restaurant workers winding down over dishes of deep fried pork chops, congee, or stir fried duck feet. The basement restaurant is heralded by big name chefs around town as some of the best Chinese in DC, and not just because it’s open at ungodly hours.

The menu is classic Chinese-American in the front and traditional Chinese in the back, but whether you’re ordering General Tso’s chicken or chilled jelly fish, New Big Wong is an oasis of ultra late night dining that’s served DC’s tired chefs, bartenders, and waitstaff for years.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been to a place where the staff has just as much fun as the patrons, all while remaining professional – but this place was it! I stopped by with friends for a little after dinner fun. The place is new and you can tell by how clean the 2 floors are. There are 2 floors complete with a full bar and mini golf courses which seemed very fun. When we visited, DJ Pharris was playing music and had us dancing so long we never even golfed LOL! The drinks were well made and the staff had great attitudes to match. I look forward to coming back to play golf before it becomes too popular!”

Not many travelers think of Chicago as a seafood capital, but Midwesterners have a real love affair with the fish fry. Check out the Midwest seafood phenomenon at a super local spot, just like a Chicagoan. Lawrences Fish and Shrimp is always open, 24 hours a day, at its Canal Street location. This local institution is about as no-frills as it gets, but its been serving happy customers since 1950. Visitors can enjoy a local Chicago experience and a tasty, filling meal too.
