Tacos Al Pastor Via The Sea: Lena Brava

Taquerias are pretty much on every corner in Chicago, and many of them serve good tacos al pastor, aka spit-roasted pork topped with a bit of roast pineapple. Not every corner, however, has golden god of Mexican cuisine Rick Bayless modernizing regional Mexican food like he does at the corner of Randolph and Peoria. Menu items may change, but expect dishes to feature a smokey, flame-licked flavor.

Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse

To say Gibsons is popular would be an understatement this is the highest grossing independent restaurant in all of Chicago. The restaurants prime location just off the Magnificent Mile and commitment to quality has fueled its reputation as a Chicago classic since it opened in 1989. Once youre in the door, the dining rooms pressed tin ceilings amplify laughter and conversations, lending a boisterous atmosphere that suddenly makes another round feel like the only good idea. But Gibsons owes its staying power to its steaks: The restaurant is the first in the country to have its own USDA certification, Gibsons Prime Angus beef. Save room for desserts, which the menu humbly lists as carrot cake or chocolate mousse pie, but in reality are towering, multi-layer creations that rival the citys skyscrapers in height.

Dining at the restaurant: Gibsons is open for limited indoor dining and outdoor dining on the restaurants covered, heated patio.

Takeout: Takeout and delivery are available through the restaurants website, offering prepared items, family meals that feed four people, and cook-at-home steaks and chops that come with a container of the restaurants signature seasoning salt and videos to help guide diners through the cooking process.

Tahini Chocolate Chip Cookie Sugar Moon Bakery

Chicago’s Best Take Out @ Fogo 2 Go

Fellow Tribune food critic Louisa Chu loves to tease me about being a known sweets hater. While perhaps slightly exaggerated, it is totally true that I dont like overly sugary desserts. This left my colleagues very confused when I kept raving about the chocolate chip cookies from Sugar Moon Bakery, the tiny Logan Square shop from Dina Cimarusti. But while sweet, the cookie also has a nutty backbone of tahini and just enough smoked salt to lend it a savory edge. $3.50. 3612 W. Wrightwood Ave., sugarmoonchicago.com

Robert Maleski named Millys for his grandmother Emily, but was inspired by Burts Place founder Burt Katz, his spiritual pizza godfather. After a pandemic-related layoff, Maleski started making what he calls pizza-in-the-pan. He currently works out of a shared kitchen in the Logan Square neighborhood. You have to order ahead, and days, hours and pizza are very limited. Its all worth it for the stunning, light and vibrant ode to the caramelized crust.

Mannys Cafeteria & Delicatessen

The torchbearer for a dying breed of Jewish delis and diners in Chicago, Mannys has endured for more than a half-century in the South Loop thanks to massive and delicious pastrami sandwiches, an array of hot homestyle dishes on steam tables, and family-friendly cultivated over generations. The cafeteria-style setting is plastered with decades-old newspaper clippings and letters from Chicago luminaries. The space also now houses a new wing for bagels, sweets, coffee, and food to go. Mannys was where Chicago politicians were often seen brokering power deals in the delis heyday.

Peking Duck Dinner At Lao Sze Chuan

Best Barbeque Chicago Soul Food Barbecue Carry Out Home ...

Lao Sze Chuan has been serving up Chinese classes for over 20 years, but the one youve got to try is the Peking duck. Roasted until the skin develops an incredible crispy texture, its served with scallions, a sweet hoisin sauce, and delicate pancakes that you can wrap it all up in. Dont worry though, after savoring the crispy skin and tender breast meat, the rest of the duck turns into duck fried rice and a delicious duck soup!

We had the Peking duck which was excellent. I am not a big duck fan, but this duck was totally different meaty, juicy and the plum sauce was heavenly. The waitstaff was very attentive and patient. Rose M.

The seven course duck dinner is fantastic! Quiet atmosphere and a beautiful view of the Magnificent Mile. Servers are wonderful and very attentive. Highly recommended. Joy N.

Each of the 7 courses of the duck dinner was delicious. Lovely ambience, wonderful service and juicy Peking duck made it an amazing experience. Id definitely go back again. Kathy P.

Trust this lifelong Chicagoan when she says it wasn’t all that long ago that take-out was limited to pizza, hot dogs, burgers, subs and tacos – not that there’s anything wrong with that and wow – do we have undeniably stellar versions of all.

Need sweets? The new Sugargoat should be on your list as well as Ferrara Bakery . Ferrara also offers authentic Italian sandwiches, pizza and and pasta to-go for lunch.

These, and many Chicago restaurants make it easy to order favorite meals conveniently through online ordering and by phone.

Honey Butter Fried Chicken

A perennial North Side favorite, Honey Butter Fried Chicken comes from a pair of talented chefs who threw underground dinner parties. These crisp and skinless pieces of meat come with the restaurants signature honey butter. But beyond the food, Christine Cikowksi and Josh Kulp are committed to improving restaurant working conditions and have championed a business model where employees receive health care benefits. That explains prices that are higher than the average counter service joint, but HBFC reports strong worker retention, which is a rarity in the industry.

Mediterranean Octopus At Andros Taverna

You can find octopus on menus all over Chicago, but this one at Andros Taverna was the most tender and juicy version Id ever tried. Chef Doug Psaltis walked me through the cooking process, but it turns out its seasoned with little more than olive oil and salt, plus a squeeze of lemon at the end. The real secret to success is that he has a guy in New York who sources the best octopus he can find from Spain. The quality is unparalleled, Psaltis says. androstaverna.com

Fried Shrimp: Haires Gulf Shrimp

Chicago is nowhere near an ocean and yet, fried shrimp shacks dot the landscape almost as much as Italian beef joints or deep-dish pizza parlors. Most places serve thick under-salted flour-laden clumps. Haires, however, purveys a light, golden crispy battered and butterflied shrimp so addictive, it can be eaten like popcorn. Though it needs no celebrity endorsement, Chance the Rapper has been spotted at this Southside gem.
