Cheapest Grocery Store In Chicago

There Are Big Quality Differences

The Great Grocery Store Battle | Chicago

Butera Market, Food 4 Less, Garden Fresh Market, Jewel-Osco, Target, and Walmart received low ratings from their surveyed customers for quality of fresh produce, quality of meats, and overall quality. Walmart earned the lowest overall ratings: Only 28 percent of its surveyed customers rated it superior overall.

On the other hand, Fresh Thyme Farmers Market, Marianos, Sunset Foods, Walts Food Center, and Woodmans each received superior overall ratings from more than 80 percent of its surveyed customers.

Not all stores with low prices received bad quality ratings, however. According to Consumers’ Checkbook, Meijer received quality ratings that were “considerably higher” than the ratings for Jewel-Osco, Target and Walmart.

Jewel-Osco, which has dozens of stores in the Chicago area, received low marks for “quality of fresh produce,” “quality of meats” and “overall quality.” Its prices are also 3 to 6 percent higher than the average.

“Jewel-Osco carries thousands of products in each store,” reads a statement from the grocery store chain in response to the survey results. “A comparison of a small number of items does not provide consumers with a true picture of prices across the entire store, nor does it appropriately reflect the full savings that our customers enjoy.”

On the opposite end of the quality spectrum is Whole Foods, which has the highest prices but also has consistently high ratings on quality of fresh produce and meat. Whole Foods’ prices, however, are 69 percent higher than the all-store average.

Whole Foods representatives also responded to the survey results, saying their products are “unlike” many of the products sold in conventional grocery stores, which accounts for the higher prices.

Other stores that received high quality ratings, but also have higher than average prices, are Fresh Thyme Farmers Markets and Sunset Foods.

Whole Foods Remains By Far The Areas Most Expensive Grocery Chain

7 Chicago Neighborhood Markets to Buy Your Groceries ...

When Amazon purchased Whole Foods last year, many consumers were excited by the prospect of paying Amazon-like prices for Whole Foods-quality products. But were not there quite yet.

Whole Foods built a loyal following by offering high-quality produce, meat, prepared foods, and generic staples, evidenced by the very high ratings it gets for the produce and meat quality questions in our surveys of grocery store customers. Whole Foods customers continue to rate it highly on our surveys for quality of fresh produce and meatabout the same as before the buyout.

But our price surveys always found Whole Foods charges whole-paycheck prices in 2016, when we last shopped area stores, Whole Foods prices were a whopping 78 higher than Marianos, another area chain that consistently gets very high quality ratings.

Although Amazon successfully spins up a lot of media attention each time it announces a price cut at Whole Foods, it remains by far the most expensive option among chains and stores we shopped here. This time, we found its overall prices were about 42 percent higher than the all-store average, or 48 percent higher than Marianoshardly a big improvement. And we found the prices it charges for its 365 store brand and independent brands remain more expensive than the least expensive options offered at the other chains and stores we surveyed in the Chicago area.

Whole Foods Amazon Prime Discounts Dont Yet Add Up To Much

Like most grocery stores, Whole Foods uses loss leaderswidely advertised discounts on a small number of itemsto draw customers into stores . But theres a new twist: Amazon Prime members who provide their phone numbers at checkout automatically receive further discounts . Prime members get an extra 10 percent off items already on sale at Whole Foods, plus special Prime-only discounts on a handful of other weekly special items.

While these perks sound great, we found that so far they arent worth much. Compared to most other grocery stores, Whole Foods runs very few sales and offered only five Prime-only specials. Sometimes its Prime-only deals are designed to garner a lot of attention: For Valentines Day, it hyped that Prime members could buy two dozen roses for $19.99, instead of $24.99. But because Whole Foods and Amazon offer so few of these discounts, they wont add up to save most shoppers much money.

Amazon likely isnt done making changes at Whole Foods. Well continue to check in.

The 8 Cheapest Stores In America According To This Survey

In 2018, the grocery industry expanded into areas American shoppers never thought it wouldservices like Whole Foods’ 2-hour home delivery, Target’s in-store delivery team, Kroger’s decision to launch a fleet of driverless cars, and the rise of plant-based foods at nearly every major retailer . But one of the most important aspects for consumers has remained the sameshoppers still care how much money can they save while buying groceries.

The team of retail experts at Consumer Reports conduct a survey every year to determine how much shoppers are spending at more than 60 recognizable chain supermarkets across the nation. They ask 50,000 shoppers about their spending habits at each grocery storeand compare prices of grocery staples at each chain, too.

Consumer Reports shared their ranking of the top eight supermarkets that scored best for affordability: While these supermarkets outperformed others by slashing prices, the following list is ranked alphabetically.

Unlike in most major U.S. metropolitan areas, a lot of companies operate grocery stores in the Chicago area. That competition drives down prices: The price differences between the low-cost chains and high-cost chains in this area are a lot smaller here than in the six other regions where we publish Checkbook. In other words, stores here that offer middle-of-the-road pricing would be price winners in other markets.

Best Cheap Online Grocery Shopping Stores

by Lauren Bennett – Last Updated March 11, 2021

Buying my groceries online has saved me $100s and many hours of my precious time!

Up until about a year ago, I shopped in-store at cheap local grocery stores.

Sure, I shopped on Amazon, and with other online retailers, but I did my big grocery shop in-store.

And, boy, was that a mistake!

Between the cost of gas, getting enticed by those deals on the ends of aisles that resulted in me buying stuff that wasnt actually on my shopping list, to missing out on offers, shopping in-store wasnt great for my budget.

There had to be a better way.

And there was

Its Expensive To Eat Healthy

TREASURE ISLAND FOODS

Yvernia Wilson, who is on a fixed income and vigilant about grocery prices, was taken aback early in the summer when a large package of hamburger meat shed normally pay $8.99 for was listed at $14 at the Jewel-Osco she shops at on the South Side.

A nice-sized pot roast for Sunday dinner was almost $20, $6 more than shed usually spend. Even a package of chicken wings cost $3 more.

Months later, prices still feel outrageous, said Wilson, 63, who lives in Calumet Heights with her adult son and 6-year-old twin granddaughters and pays for the households groceries.

You walk around the store and say, Do I get this or do I get that? How much of this can I get to make it stretch? she said.

Wilson restricts herself to two meats and for some items has resorted to buying cheaper brands she doesnt necessarily like. She bypasses the organic aisle and sometimes forgoes fruit altogether if it isnt on sale.

We talk about eating healthy, and its expensive to eat healthy, she said.

Wilson, who lost her husband to cancer in December, lives off Social Security and a small pension from the insurance company where she worked for 26 years.

Wilson also, for the first time in her life, applied for government food assistance a notion that took some time to accept.

Is Aldi The Cheapest Grocery Store

Aldi. Its known for its quarter-to-release carts, no plastic bags policy, minimalist advertising, and of course, its rock bottom pricing. In Chicagoland alone, there are over 100 locations of this German-based discount store. Within a 3 mile radius of my apartment, I could be shopping at my pick of 5 different Aldis. But I dont. And I often feel guilty about it, especially considering that I blog about grocery shopping on a budget. But as someone who doesnt own a car and carries all of her groceries from the store to home, the 1 mile to my closest Aldi just seems daunting.

However, this past week I found myself in the vicinity, so decided to pop in to see what real food items I could find. Their weekly ad boasted $.99/lb strawberries and $.99/pint blueberries, two offers I couldnt resist. As I made my way to the produce, I kept my eye out for other natural products that I regularly purchase. And guess what? I wasnt impressed.

Their tortilla chips at a mere $1.19/13oz bag included oat fiber in the ingredients list, an unnecessary addition to the corn, oil, and salt in my opinion.

I couldnt find a single jar of salsa without any added sugar, although the price tag of $1.89/25oz jar was tempting.

Then I found the natural peanut butter with an impressive price tag of just $1.69/16oz. However, when examining the label, I found evaporated cane juice, palm oil, and molasses under ingredients, as opposed to my typical jar that contains just peanuts and salt.
