The flagship, 13th-floor Chicago Athletic Association Hotel rooftop restaurant is Cindys, which has a gorgeous indoor dining space topped by a vaulted glass ceiling, as well as an open-air terrace that overlooks Millennium Park. Its open for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunches, serving seasonal food and tasty alcoholic punches.
The Mad Men-esque Cherry Circle Room serves elevated regional foods from breakfast until dinner. Its menu includes an array of cocktails and impressive seafood towers. As with the neighboring Cherry Circle Room, Land and Sea Dept. worked with Stock Mfg. to design and develop a uniform system for the staff, playful and sporty fashions that feature color block button ups and khaki joggers.
We had the pleasure of finally working with Texas-based artists LAND, who created the history of balls mural on the rooms south wall, as well as the identity program for the various design and print elements found throughout.

This Historic Former Elite Athletic Men’s Club Is Now A Hip Buzzing Hotel With Chic Nods To Its Past
The Chicago Athletic Association opened in 1893 as an elite private mens athletic club. It operated as such until 2007, where it was abandoned for a few years before undergoing a full renovation. The designers overseeing the restoration knew not to mess with a good thing when they preserved the hotels Victorian Gothic features, like marble staircases, old-fashioned paneled drawing rooms, and cozy fireplaces in common areas. A traditionally masculine aesthetic is found throughout, seen in tufted leather couches, dark walls, and even pommel horses that act as bedside benches.
The property opened as a hotel in 2015, and it attracts a crowd largely of young professionals with its array of bars, beautiful aesthetic, and hip ambience. Couples, solo business travelers, and groups of friends locals and tourists alike can all be found hanging at rooftop bar Cindys, speakeasy-style Milk Room, and the Game Room bar, which has billiards, bocce bay, and shuffleboard. Other unique offerings here include Shake Shack room service and a Topgolf Swing Suite with two interactive gaming simulators for virtual golf.
There are downsides here, however, including thin walls that cause noise complaints, a daily resort fee called a Founders Fee, and some rooms that are quite compact.

With a record number of tourists coming to Chicago last year, the Loop has become a magnet for hoteliers wishing to capitalize on this growth. Six months into the year, we’ve seen the opening of several long-awaited projects including Hyatt Centric The Loop Chicago, a Hampton Inn inside the historic Chicago Motor Club Building, and the world’s first Virgin Hotel. Last week, another hotel joined this impressive list: the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel.
If you’re like me and you’ve had the chance to check out this latest addition to the Loop’s hotel offerings, you may have been left with some pressing questions. What is the Chicago Athletic Association? How old is the building? Why am I seeing the Chicago Cubs logo all over the place? In our latest Then & Now post we take a look at the history of this incredible building and its journey to becoming a hotel.
A Home Away From Home For The Elite
The Chicago Athletic Association opened in 1893 amid the boom surrounding the Worlds Columbian Exposition. It offered an escape from the city, with all the comforts of a well-appointed homeand excellent athletic facilities for its members to enjoy. Private clubs had long been an important institution among the well-heeled of the East Coast, many of whom found themselves spending increasing amounts of time in the fast-growing capital of the Prairie.

Tank : Originally referred to as The Tank by club members, the Chicago Athletic Associations pool has been transformed into an inviting, public venue, preserving the name. The mosaic tile which once lined the bottom of the swimming now sits atop the basin, mimicking the spaces original lane striping and markers.
Drawing Room : The Drawing Room is also the Chicago Athletic Association hotels lobby and features the original fireplaces, antique trophies, intimate reading nooks and lounge areas.
Game Room : Originally the billiards room of the Chicago Athletic Association, Game Room is a casual playground homage to our clubby past for a new era of competitive smack downs.
Stagg Court : Stagg Court has been fully restored to its original gymnasium grandeur, featuring two basketball hoops and a vintage mahogany running track encircling the room from one story above.
White City Ballroom : Truly a breathtaking expression of Old Chicago glamour and grandeur, White City Ballrooms floor-to-ceiling windows, capped with vintage stained glass, open directly onto Millennium Park and Lake Michigans blue horizon.

Block Electric recently celebrated the completion of a major two-year renovation of the Chicago Athletic Association building, which is located at 12 S. Michigan Avenue in the heart of downtown Chicago. Now named the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, the newly renovated 120-year-old historic building has 241 guest rooms, three restaurants, two large banquet rooms, retail shops, a game room, a basketball court, a shuffle board court and a fencing court. I believe most people thought it would be better to level the existing 120 year old building and build a new structure, Block Electric Project Manager Jerry Hughes said. But, two years later, the result was an extremely beautiful andoriginal hotel.
According to Hughes, the project was unique in many ways. Block Electric worked closely with the Landmark Association to restore original light fixtures to their exact condition from when they were built more than a century ago, Hughes said. This allowed us to work with different subcontractors, such as Arc Historic Products, who assisted in the restoration of these fixtures. We also assisted with recreating an original plaster cone shaped stalactite light fixture which was located in the Michigan Avenue Ballroom. This process took numerous meetings and design changes before the final replicated fixture was approved and put into production.

It Has An Excellent Downtown Chicago Location Right On Michigan Avenue Near Many Sights
The Chicago Athletic Association Hotel is located right on Michigan Avenue, in the heart of Chicagos tourist and business district, making it ideal for visitors wanting a central spot to visit tourist hotspots. Its next to Millennium Park, where famed sculpture Cloud Gate is located. The Art Institute of Chicago is on the next block, and the Willis Tower is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Numerous restaurants, bars, and shops are within an easy walk of the hotel. Guests will have their choice of L-trains, with several stations less than a five-minute walk from the hotel. Chicagos O’Hare International Airport is a 30-minute drive from the property.

A Fitness Center Free Wi
Outside of restaurants and bars, there are few features at this property. The Chicago Athletic Association Hotel gym, a small 24-hour facility with retro wooden elements and art featuring a line of vintage athletes doing calisthenics, is available for guests to use. The hotel also offers discounted personal training sessions, but theres no spa or pool available to use. The daily resort fee gives guests access to the hotels seasonal fleet of bicycles. Guests can also sign up for one of the buildings guided architecture tours six days a week.
The hotel offers 17,000 square feet of meeting facilities on-site that are elegant and sophisticated, with polished wood-paneled walls and modern black leather armchairs. Weddings can also be arranged, with four venues available with a range of aesthetics, from a glamorous parquet-floored ballroom with crystal chandeliers to the restored old CAA basketball court , or its old indoor pool, featuring original tiled lap lanes.
Wi-Fi is free at standard speeds, though guests wishing to stream will need to upgrade for a charge to the faster internet. Self-parking is available for an expensive overnight fee, and valet parking is available up to eight hours at a time, and pets can stay free .
