The Chicago Botanic Garden celebrates the unexpected verve of wild orchids this winter during The Orchid Show: Untamed. Starting February 12 and running through March 27, the Gardens indoor galleries will be filled with lush installations and saturated with the summery color and scent of tropical plants.
We are excited to welcome visitors back to the Garden this yearfor the Orchid Show, said Jodi Zombolo,associate vice president, Visitor Events and Programs. This Showprovides an enchantingopportunityto soak up the beauty of fresh blooms in the quietof winter.
The Orchid Show: Untamed will feature more than 10,000 orchid blooms in whimsical places of our imagination. Attendees will see what happens when sweeps of orchids take over an old secret garden, burst through walls, twine around abandoned pillars, and spill over a 1900s-era piano. The focus on how orchids grow where many other plants cannot, emphasizes how their irrepressible spirit reflects hope, resilience and beauty in an unpredictable world.
On Thursday evenings, Orchids After Hours is a captivating way to experience a nighttime viewing of the Show. Cocktails and a retro menu including fried five-cheese ravioli and pineapple upside-down cake will be available for purchase. A special Orchids After Hours will be held on Monday, February 14 and will feature a special dessert and prosecco splits.

Garfield Park Conservatory Spring Flower Show
Spring arrives early at the Garfield Park Conservatory, thanks to the annual Spring Flower Show. The entire conservatory will be brimming with hundreds of tropical plants, azaleas, tulips, snapdragons, camellias, and more. At 4.5 acres, this botanical treasure is one of the largest greenhouse conservatories in the United States. Located in the midst of historic Garfield Park, the conservatory was designed by renowned landscape architect Jens Jensen and opened to the public in 1907.
This years Spring Flower Show, themed Golden Hour, will celebrate the golden light of dawn and dusk with colorful displays of azalea, hydrangea, and calibrachoa. Two new displays will be unveiled at this years show: a series of immense hanging baskets overflowing with spring flowers, and two rope-art displays depicting the vibrant rays of the sun.

For my birthday, I wished for wine, brunch, and The Orchid Show. Yes, you read that right. I wanted to see The Orchid Show at the Chicago Botanic Garden. After years of wanting to see, this was the year. See, orchids are my absolute favorite. And this year we made it happen.
How To Select A Good Orchid
After visiting the Orchid Show , you may be inspired to try growing an orchid in your home, but for the new orchid grower, selecting an orchid may seem overwhelming. Here are a few tips to get you started.
1. Know yourself, your growing environment, and what youre buying.
Orchids live in a wide variety of habitats and come in a wide variety of sizes, so youll want to make sure that you choose one thats well suited to your home and to your schedule. For example: if you have lots of bright, direct sun in your home, a Cattleya will do very well, but a Phalaenopsis may struggle. If you have questions about an orchids growing conditions, you can always ask the grower youre buying from, or check out the American Orchid Societys Culture Sheets. Also, make sure that your plant has a tag identifying it, or that you get its name and put a tag in the pot right away. There are thousands of orchid species and hybrids, and often its difficult to identify a plant on the flower alone. Having a tag will help you to always remember what species or hybrid your orchid is.
2. Choose a plant you really like.
3. Only buy a healthy plant.

Among the first to get the hook: the Chicago Botanic Gardens Orchid Show.
The show was to have opened in February, but the gardens greenhouses are still closed to guests due to mitigations put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19. Along with the show, related programs including Orchids After Hours and the Orchid Marketplace have also been called off.
The show is expected to return in 2022.
The outdoor grounds of the Botanic Garden, the Garden Shop and the gardens visitor center are open to the public daily. Pre-registration is required for timed entry.

Spring is still a few weeks away, but it’s already blooming at the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Orchid Show.
GLENCOE, Ill. — Spring is still a few weeks away, but it’s already blooming at the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Orchid Show.
It runs February 11 – March 26, 2017, two weeks longer than previous years. The theme of this year’s show is “Orchids in Vogue” and features the beautiful flowers as celebrated in pop culture. Highlights include several “dresses” made from natural materials. Visitors can also enjoy rare orchids discovered from around the world.
The Orchid Show is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ticket prices for adults are $12. On March 11, the Illinois Orchid Society Spring Show & Sale will take place at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

The Chicago Flower & Garden Show has been canceled, they look forward to returning in 2021.
The Chicago Flower & Garden Show at Navy Pier Show kicks off Chicagos gardening season by inspiring gardeners and flower lovers with how-to seminars, a marketplace of the latest gardening trends and products, a culinary stage, new nightly themed events, and much more. Both festival halls will be filled with over 700 plant varieties, including the unveiling of a new, exclusive petunia only available for purchase at the show.

Weve rolled out the tall ladders, prepped hanging baskets with Spanish moss, and worked hard to keep 10,000 warmth-loving tropical orchids happy .
Its all hands on deck for the Show, which runs February 11 to March 26, following the Members Preview night on Friday, February 10. Volunteers across the Garden and beyond have pitched in to help from departments including Education, Model Railroad, and Horticultural Therapy Services, along with our Womans Board.
It all starts with ideas from our creative team, which starts brainstorming shortly after the end of the previous years Orchid Show.

In the completed archway, supporting vines are woven together and attached to a hidden framework. Notice the dangling aerial roots from orchids that are epiphytesplants that grow on trees, with above-ground rather than in-ground roots.
Sometimes, things dont always go as planned. Work on the 13-foot high orchid wind chime got delayed while we waited and waited for a delivery of bamboo supports from Colombia Luckily, the shipment arrived before the Show.
When you walk into Nichols Hall, dont forget to look for the dozens of blooms overhead.

A Post-Orchid Show Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 31,provides an opportunity to take home favorite orchids from the show.

Celebrating Brazilian Orchids: Cattleya Coccinea And Relatives
While we are in the midst of the exquisite Orchid Show, the Garden is already planning a summer of Brazil in the Garden, highlighting the influence of Brazil on gardens, arts and culture, and conservation. This seems like a great opportunity to publicize some Brazilian orchids that have been among my favorites all the years I have grown orchids at home.
First, a few facts.
Brazil has one of the highest diversities of orchid species of any country in the world, with more than 2,500 species reported, and no doubt many more undescribed species from the botanically unexplored interior. If you enjoy orchids at all, you have already seen Brazilian orchid species or the hybrids derived from them. Just a few of the well-known orchids that are indigenous to Brazil are many of the Cattleya species as well as many of the former Sophronitis and Laelia species now included in Cattleya also species from Epidendrum, Maxillaria, Miltonia, Oncidium, Phragmipedium, Stanhopea, and others. The national flower of BrazilCattleya purpurata is also an orchid.

Test Your Orchid Iqhow Do Orchid Roots Work
The first time you walk under a big, lush tangle of orchid roots at the Orchid Show can be quite disconcertingwhat are those big white things dangling in the air, you wonder, and how do they work?
Lets look at those roots from a different angle, so that the next time you walk under them, youll know more about what youre seeing.
Theyre Called Aerial Roots
Of the 27,000-plus species of orchids on the planet, about 70 percent are epiphytesplants that grow on trees, with above-ground rather than in-ground roots. Known as aerial roots, they act as anchors and supports as they wrap around branches and trunks, stabilizing the plant as it grows. Roots are an orchids lifeline, absorbing water and nutrients from the air and from the leaf litter in the tree niche it inhabits.
Orchid Roots Are Adventitious
That is, an orchids roots can grow along the stem of the plant, not just out of the bottom of it. The advantage of being adventitious? Plants can be propagated easily. Many orchids grow baby plantlets, called keikis, that can be removed from the mother plant along with their own set of adventitious roots.

The White Stuff Is Velamen
An aerial root should look fleshy and green the white coating that covers it is called the velamen. Thin and rather papery, but spongy and protective, its a one-way water barrier that allows moisture to soak inand keeps it from oozing out.
