Chicago Bulls At Milwaukee Bucks

Sudden Accuracy From The Outside

#6 BULLS at #3 BUCKS | FULL GAME HIGHLIGHTS | April 20, 2022

Chicago’s defense stepped up in both games, especially against Milwaukee, when they came up with several stops late in the game, including a crucial play by Alex Caruso when he drew a charge on a rampaging Giannis Antetokounmpo. But the Bulls’ sudden accuracy from the three-point range truly made the difference.

In their last game against Milwaukee, Chicago shot a solid 42% from three-point land, going 18-of-42 in a 118-113 victory. The 18 made triples was a season-high for Chicago, and it was a trio of triples from Coby White and Nikola Vucevic that propelled the Bulls to the win after trailing 106-109.

Against Boston earlier this week, Chicago shot even better from beyond the arc, going 14-of-29 for a 48% shooting clip. Zach LaVine made five, while DeRozan, the midrange maestro, got in on the action and sank three triples.

White Showed He Deserves More Minutes

Bulls guard Coby White, left, and the Bucks’ Jrue Holiday reach for a loose ball during Wednesday’s game in Milwaukee. White scored 14 points the Bulls’ 118-113 victory.

With Goran Dragi out with left shoulder pain, White got extended minutes off the bench and made them count.

I tell him all the time, if he misses one, two, three, whatever, keep shooting, DeRozan told reporters afterward. He got that capability to get hot, and at any moment of the game Im looking for Cob.

White missed eight games with a left thigh bruise and then was brought back slowly by coach Billy Donovan the next two. But after Ayo Dosunmu committed back-to-back turnovers late in the fourth quarter, White returned with less than four minutes remaining to help save the day.

White finished with 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting, including 4 of 7 on 3-pointers, while playing 25-plus minutes. Hes averaging a career-low 19.6 minutes in 10 games, which also has affected his 3-point shooting, attempting only 4.8 per game and making 31.3%. Last season White shot a career-best 38.5% from behind the arc and averaged 5.8 attempts per game.

With the Bulls having issues getting off to good starts early in the season, perhaps Donovan should replace Dosunmu with White in the starting lineup to see if it can fix the problem.

Giannis Was A Monster

Ever since the “ladder incident” at Philadelphia, Giannis has been on a mission. He was having a tough stretch of games coming back from injury, but it seems the 2x MVP is back to prime form.

He was brilliant in this game, as he finished with 36 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists on 55% shooting. He was a beast in the second half, as he had 28 points in that period alone, and he kept his team in the game. The Bucks will be pleased with Giannis, particularly his efforts in the closing moments.

With less than two minutes left, Giannis hit a smooth jumper from the top of the key to give Milwaukee a three-point lead. He was calm, and composed, not rushing into his shot. Despite the loss, Bucks Nation can be happy about Giannis getting his stride back.

Why The Bucks Can Cover

Milwaukee has won two of its last three games, including a 119-111 win against Portland on Monday night. The Bucks have also dominated Chicago in recent years, winning 16 of the last 17 matchups, knocking the Bulls out of the playoffs in the first round last year. Giannis Antetokounmpo leads Milwaukee with 30.1 points and 11.6 rebounds per game, making him the fifth-leading rebounder in the NBA.

He scored 37 points on 16-of-24 shooting on Monday, despite entering the game on the injury report with left calf tightness. Center Brook Lopez is the NBA’s leading shot-blocker at 2.8 per game after swatting five shots against the Trail Blazers. Milwaukee has won nine of its last 10 home games, while Chicago has only covered once in its last five games.

Confidence To Shoot The Triple

Chicago Bulls lose 4th straight, falling to Milwaukee Bucks

The Bulls play to their strengths. With their best shooter, Lonzo Ball, still recovering from knee surgery, Chicago has been hesitant to launch from beyond and ranks near the bottom in both three-point makes and attempts . However, DeRozan says he has confidence in their abilities, and it’s only a matter of time until they get into a rhythm.

“The confidence I have in this group of guys, once we figure it out we’d get it clicking. Being locked in and having the confidence to compete, these are the results we can get. These last two games, it’s the top teams in the NBA showed that we can do it,”said DeRozan.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Forced To Work Around The Rim

Defensively, the Bulls havent had much luck in slowing down Giannis Antetokounmpo the last handful of years who has, right? but the Bucks had the springy Williams harass the Bucks star early on, and he blocked two of Antetokounmpos interior shots early. Andre Drummond and Javonte Green swatted shots away from Antetokounmpo also, and the Bulls blocked six shots in the first quarter with hustle one more than their per-game average.

“I don’t know how the scorekeepers do it but their hands, their strips it felt like there were a lot of strips down low so I don’t know if those are blocks or not, so they’ve got a few guys that I think got just a defensive disposition,” Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said. “They’ve got hands, they’re strong, they kind of swarmed him. And you know, those could easily be fouls and and-one’s. It felt like their timing, they were right on the ball and they were getting it.

“I was very impressed with Chicago tonight. They played well. They deserved to win. We got to be a little bit better. A team throws that kind of game at us, can we respond? And tonight they were just better. That’s another example.”

The activity around Antetokounmpo freed others on the Bucks but had him go 4-for11 in the first half including 3-for-7 from the paint for just eight first-half points. And even though Williams went to the bench early in the third quarter with four fouls, DeRozan and Green blocked shots on Antetokounmpo inside, too.

Will Dragic Play Against The Bucks

Dragic injured his shoulder after colliding with Sam Houser with 2:38 to play in the first quarter of Mondays game against the Celtics. He immediately headed towards the locker room but returned to the game later and finished with one steal and one turnover in season-low seven minutes on the floor.

Its his neck, thats where he got hit and I think he had some numbness going down the back of his arm and into his elbow,Bulls head coach Billy Donovan said after the game. When he came back in, he just didnt look right to me and that was totally my decision.

The 36-year-old has been very productive in limited minutes off the Bulls bench. Hes averaging 8.7 points and 3.6 assists in just 18.5 minutes over 17 games while shooting 44.4 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-point range.

Bulls Vs Bucks Highlights: Corner Triples Defense And Demar Prove To Be A Winning Formula

the Bulls kicked off their road trip in style last night

Your Chicago Bulls looked to be potentially circling the drain very early into the 2022-23 season, having lost four straight games to fall to a 6-10 record. The Bulls were certainly not favored to win either of their next two contests against the Easts two most formidable squads, the Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks.

But something changed, starting with an emphatic home win against a Boston team that felt slightly undersized with Robert Williams III still sidelined.

Surely, the Bulls wouldnt fare nearly as well against the massive Milwaukee Bucks?

Apparently, these Bulls might be made of stronger stuff than we had initially suspected. Chicago went to work in Milwaukee, eventually besting the Bucks 118-113 in a hard-fought affair that at times threatened to run away from them.

So howd they do it?

Not Taking Care Of The Ball

The Bucks were very careless with the ball, and it was mainly Giannis and Jrue Holiday. The two stars combined for 15 turnovers, which is way too many for the two primary ball handlers.

Overall on the season, turnovers have been a problem, as Milwaukee ranks only 20th in the whole league when it comes to protecting the ball .

No matter how good the defense is, they will keep exposing themselves if they continue throwing the ball away at such a high rate. The few losses that have happened this season have been a direct result of turnovers and the opposing teams taking advantage of them, as that will for sure be a point of emphasis for coach Mike Budenholzer and his staff.

MILWAUKEE – DeMar DeRozan had 36 points and eight assists, and the Chicago Bulls beat the Milwaukee Bucks 118-113 on Wednesday night.

Chicago began the week with a 6-10 record but has now beaten the NBA’s top two teams. The Bulls ended Boston’s nine-game winning streak on Monday.

Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic scored 18 points apiece for Chicago, and Coby White finished with 14 points.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 36 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists for the Bucks, who lost for just the second time in 11 home games this season. Brook Lopez scored 20 points and Jrue Holiday had 14 points and 11 assists.

Milwaukee led 109-106 before White made a tying 3-pointer with 1:15 left. After Antetokounmpo was called for a charge, White took a pass from DeRozan and buried another 3 to put the Bulls ahead to stay. The Bucks turned over the ball on the ensuing possession and DeRozan found Vucevic, who swished a corner 3.

The Bucks had won 17 of their previous 19 games, including playoffs, over their Central Division rivals.

Antetokounmpo was limited to eight points on 4-of-11 shooting in the first half. He scored 11 points in the third quarter, but the Bulls held a seven-point advantage heading to the fourth.

The Bulls built a 10-point fourth-quarter lead before the Bucks battled back to tie it midway through the period.

Milwaukee led by as much as 12 in the second quarter before Chicago rallied. Holidays buzzer-beating jumper gave the Bucks a 62-61 halftime edge.

Play Of The Game Was Alex Caruso Drawing Giannis Antetokounmpos Fifth Foul

With 1:02 left and the game tied at 109, Giannis Antetokounmpo sized up the Bulls defense and made his patented drive into the paint. But Bulls guard Alex Caruso timed up the big mans steps and positioned himself perfectly to draw an offensive foul. The play was not reviewed, and the turnover led to a Coby White three-pointer and 112-109 Bulls lead with 46 seconds left.

Are Corner Treys The Bulls Secret Sauce

The Bulls went 6-of-12 on their long-range looks from the corners against the Bucks, including going 4-of-6 in the fourth quarter. They shot 12-of-30 elsewhere beyond the arc.

Heaps of triple attempts were hoisted by Zach LaVine , Nikola Vucevic and Coby White .

Vucevic had actually entered the fourth frame having shot just 1-of-6 from distance, while White has been in something of an extended shooting slump all season. Four of that duos five critical fourth-quarter threes came from the corners, both arriving on back-to-back possessions.

Here are Voochs two corner treys in that final period. Note the awareness on the first play of a fully-engaged Pat Williams, who passes out of traffic on a drive to Vucevic in the left corner:

Bulls Talk

Lets now look at Cobys two massive clutch threes. The first knotted the game at 109-109 with 1:15 left in regulation. He first weaves inside the paint, then passes back out to Caruso and backs into the corner behind the three-point line, with the Bucks failing to properly communicate a defensive switch, leaving White wide open with plenty of time:
