This exciting new series began with Joel Hall Dancers & Center . For 45 years, JHDC has used the arts to enrich the lives of its community members through dance performance and education with an authentic embrace. JHDC as an arts incubator builds upon its longstanding tenets of diversity and accessibility to make dance affordable and accessible to all people in order to awaken the dancer in everyones soul.
Legacy Conversation: Muntu
This exciting new series continues with Muntu Dance Theatre. Founded in 1972, the Chicago-based Muntu Dance Theatre performs authentic and progressive interpretations of ancient and contemporary African and African-American dance, music, and folklore. A colorful and dynamic company, Muntu brings its audiences out of their seats and into the aisles with its intricate combination of dance, rhythm, and song. Muntu is also a company of teachers, an essential element to the perpetuation of the African dance art form and its accurate transmittal to audiences.

CHICAGOMayor Lori E. Lightfoot and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events today announced the full performance and activity line-up for this years SummerDance Celebration, Saturday, Sept. 17 from noon to 8 p.m. throughout Millennium Park, 201 E. Randolph Street.
SummerDance Celebration is a daylong festival of live dance performances representing the variety of dance styles and cultures found throughout Chicago. In addition to performances, dancers of all ages and skill levels are invited to take part in introductory dance lessons by professional instructors followed by live music and dancing. This years SummerDance Celebration will occur on National Dance Day.
Our SummerDance Celebration, part of the Year of Chicago Dance, is the culmination of a months-long program to show Chicagoans how music and movement can bring us together, said Nancy Villafranca, DCASE Deputy Commissioner of Programming. After two years of all-virtual or reimagined offerings, were looking forward to capping off the 25th year of our popular SummerDance series by welcoming everyone to Millennium Park to showcase the amazing talent and diversity of Chicagos dance community.

CHICAGOIn deep partnership with the local dance community, Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events Commissioner Erin Harkey have designated 2022 as the Year of Chicago Dance. This citywide, year-long focus on dance is the first of its kind in the U.S. The collaborative initiative will activate Chicagos dance industry to address critical issues facing dancers and the field of dance including funding, space, and capacity building and to consider the sustainability of this work. The Year of Chicago Dance will, of course, also include dance performances, social dancing, and special events for the public in dozens of venues throughout the city.
Chicago is a hub for arts and culture and boasts a thriving dance community home to some of the premier contemporary and ballet companies in the U.S. today with an estimated 425 dance schools/studios, 344 presenters/venues and hundreds of other organizations and the birthplace of Footwork and other dance styles but according to a recent report on Mapping the Dance Landscape in Chicagoland, nearly two-thirds of our dancers and choreographers earn less than $15,000 annually from dance and 12 percent work entirely without pay.

LOS ANGELES — Stephen “tWitch” Boss, the amiable DJ for “Ellen DeGeneres Show” and dancer who rose to fame on “So You Think You Can Dance,” has died, according to information from the Los Angeles County Coroner.
He was 40.
CNN has reached out to representatives of Boss who directed us to a statement from his wife, fellow dancer Allison Holker Boss, about his passing.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to share my husband Stephen has left us,” she said. “Stephen lit up every room he stepped into. He valued family, friends and community above all else and leading with love and light was everything to him. He was the backbone of our family, the best husband and father, and an inspiration to his fans.”
“To say he left a legacy would be an understatement, and his positive impact will continue to be felt,” she added. “I am certain there won’t be a day that goes by that we won’t honor his memory. We ask for privacy during this difficult time for myself and especially for our three children.”
Holker Boss concluded her statement by saying “Stephen, we love you, we miss you, and I will always save the last dance for you.”

Dancing With The Giordano Stars: Dance Competition To Benefit Cps Students
CHICAGO — A Hollywood-style dance competition benefiting Chicago students takes the stage Thursday night at the Park West concert venue in Lincoln Park.
Giordano Dance Chicago is hosting its 15th annual “Dancing with the Giordano Stars” event to raise money for the company’s outreach program serving Chicago Public Schools. CBS 2’s Ryan Baker will emcee the contest.
Contestants will include business, civic, and community leaders who will pair up with professional dancers.
Dancer, choreographer, and director Joshua Blake Carter said it’s a lot of pressure for contestants who have been rehearsing since June.
“They get to the event the night of, and they’re like, ‘Oh no, I don’t know if I can do it. I don’t know if I can do it.’ They get on that stage, they hit the stage, they feel their family, their friends, that audience, that energy, and it’s over so quickly,” he said. “There’s that feeling of, ‘I want to do it again. It was over too fast.'”
Routines will include each contestant performing the foxtrot, and then a dance of choice for each pair.
“Salsa, tango, hip hop. I mean, we’ve seen it all. We’ve seen line dancing. I mean, people really get creative,” Carter said.
Contestants only get 90 seconds for each dance, and Carter said judges are looking not only for performance and technical skill, but whether contestants are actually having fun.
