VIRGIN HOTELS CHICAGO

Union Station is one of the busiest spots in the city, thanks to its role as the primary terminal for commuter trains and the only intercity rail terminal in Chicago. Not only is it functional, though, its also beautiful even if you arent riding the rails, its worth a look at the Beaux Artsstyle Great Hall, with a pink Tennessee marble floor, more than a dozen Corinthian columns, terra-cotta walls, and a truly magnificent barrel-vaulted ceiling. Daniel Burnham, the architect who designed the space, once said, Make no small plans, they have no magic to stir mens blood, and its clear he stuck to that ethos when creating this show-stopping room.

Hotels That Are Near Train Station

    Hi advisors,

I will be arriving at Ohare airport on the following weekend and realise that many hotels are fully booked. As i have a budget below $120 and i do not drive. Therefore i need to stay near the train stations.

Any good hotels that are near stations that you can recommend? OR any hotels provide good reliable shuttle service?

Its my first time to US and so i am quite worried. Appreciate your help.

    Rgds

Use or similar site and check for properties in Rosemont, IL. Its just outside of ORD. All will have free shuttles to/from the airport and will be close to a blue line train station.

Look for hotels around the Cumberland Blue Line CTA station, which is near Cumberland Road and Higgins Road.

Unfortunately, assuming you are referring to the weekend of Oct. 6-7, you have picked the weekend of the Chicago Marathon to come, and many hotels have been fully booked for months. There is a current thread on the Chicago forum by a poster looking for a room near the train to run the Marathon, you may want to read that one as well for suggestions that were made. If you could delay your stay here until after the weekend you will probably have more options.

This is the thread I am referring to.

No wonder the hotels are at a higher price and of low availabilty. Thanks for all your advises.

I have just booked an hotel with Hilton Naperville/Lisle. They have a free shuttle bus then bring me to Lisle Metra Station.

Construction Over The Stations Train Shed

The large amount of land above the tracks and platforms has tempted property owners and developers. Possibly inspired by Terminal City, a development built atop New Yorks Grand Central Terminals train shed, Chicago moved to develop the air rights above Union Stations tracks. The first building to be built was that of the Chicago Daily News in 1929. Designed in the Art Deco style, it was the first structure to add a public promenade along the river, which would be named Riverside Plaza. Soon after, in 1932, the new Chicago Main Post Office opened. Also in the Art Deco style, it is a gigantic structure that occupies two full city blocks. The Great Depression and subsequent World War II halted development, but in the 1960s, work began on Gateway Center, a Modernist complex of five buildings. Only the first four were built, and construction lasted into the 1980s through several economic cycles.

In 1990 the Morton International Building opened. Now named for Boeing, it is the tallest building yet to be constructed over the tracks. With the construction of River Point beginning in 2013 and 150 North Riverside beginning in 2014, the entire length of the train shed and tracks from Union Station north to Fulton Street and south to Polk Street is enclosed by overhead development.

    Wartime Decline And Resurgence

During World War II, Union Station was at its busiest, handling as many as 300 trains and 100,000 passengers daily, many of them soldiers. Illustrator Norman Rockwell captured this era with his cover painting for a December 1944 issue of The Saturday Evening Post, depicting the station jammed with Christmas travelers. After the war, the growth of highway construction and private ownership of automobiles caused a severe decline in American passenger-rail ridership, including at Union Station.

In 1969, the stations owner demolished the concourse building, making way for a modern office tower. A new and modernized, though less grand, concourse was constructed beneath the tower. In May 1971, the national railroad Amtrak was formed to take over long-distance passenger train service, while commuter trains remained privately operated. In 1980, the stations Fred Harvey restaurant experienced a large fire. The space was damaged, windows on Clinton Street were destroyed, and the space was left vacant since then.

In 1984, Amtrak bought out the shares of Chicago Union Station Company held by Burlington Northern and the Milwaukee Road, becoming sole owner of the station.

What are people saying about train stations in Chicago, IL?

This is a review for train stations in Chicago, IL:

I spent the weekend there with my wife and two kids while driving through Illinois and wow. First, its located in the heart of everything in downtown Evanston. The employee at the front desk, Kathy, directed us to a farmers market happening behind the hotel. We got the best crepes Ive ever had along with some fresh strawberries we took back to the room. We spent the rest of the afternoon at the pool. Then we took a walk to the lighthouse beach, my kids loved every minute. My wife and I had a drink at the bar and then had some burgers sent up to the room. The kids loved the food, the hotel staff was very friendly and helpful, and everything was very clean. Highly recommend this gem.

This is a list of train stations and stops used by . This list is in alphabetical order by station or stop name, which mostly corresponds to the city in which it is located. If an page exists for the actual station or stop, a link is included. Some Thruway Motorcoach stops include train stations that are not served by Amtrak trains .

All current Amtrak train stops and Thruway Motorcoach stops have a three-letter . These codes do not necessarily correspond with the or the three-character , although many are the same. Amtrak began using station codes in 1992, so stations closed or removed from all Amtrak service prior to 1992 have no assigned station code. The station code âENPâ is used for âany stop en route, not otherwise specifiedâ. If a station code was used by more than one train station, each station is listed. However, if a station code was used for a Thruway Motorcoach stop that has changed locations, only information for the current location is included in the notes, unless one of the locations was an actual train station.

Ridership data and station ownership is from Amtrakâs Great American Stations website. The ownership of many stations is shared, with one entity owning one or more of the following: the facility itself, the parking lot, the passenger platform, and the train tracks. In some instances, the owner of the bus station used for a Thruway Motorcoach stop is not the same as the connection service provider.
