Chicago Kent College Of Law

A Legacy Of Environmental Work

Chicago-Kent College of Law 2021 Virtual Commencement

Chicago-Kent College of Law has long been recognized as a national leader in environmental law, having established one of the first programs in the 1980s. Chicago-Kent Magazine highlights alumni and faculty who spearheaded that early effort, and others who are just starting out in this ever-evolving field.

Does Your Law School Have A Nondiscrimination Policy That Prohibits Discrimination On The Basis Of Sexual Orientation

As a member of the Association of American Law Schools and in conformity with its bylaws, the faculty of Chicago-Kent has adopted the following policy: Chicago-Kent College of Law of the Illinois Institute of Technology provides equality of opportunity in legal education for all persons, including faculty and employees, with respect to hiring, continuation, promotion and tenure, applicants for admission, enrolled students, and alumni, without discrimination or segregation on the grounds of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation.

Employment Prospects & Bar Passage

Like most similarly ranked and regarded law schools, Chicago-Kent Law has a reputation that is strong mostly in the city and region in which the school is located. Fortunately for students of Chicago-Kent, their school is located in a city that houses one of the biggest legal markets of the country, which provides countless employment opportunities in all areas of the law. Recruiters from many law firms from the Windy City stop by Chicago-Kent to interview students each year, up to 80% of whom stay in and around Chicago to begin their practice of the law. As is usually the case, on-campus interviews are fruitful mostly for students ranked near the top of their class, and lower ranked students must rely more heavily on the school’s dedicated career services office and large and loyal alumni network. Similarly, students hoping to land jobs outside of Illinois will likely experience a tougher job search, and will have to take much initiative in contacting alums who practice in the areas in which they hope to work. That said, nearly all Chicago-Kent Law students are typically able to find employment within 9 months of graduation, as the school generally reports about a 90% employment rate within that time period.

On the Illinois bar exam, Chicago-Kent Law students generally pass at a somewhat higher rate than the overall state passage rate. For the Class of 2007’s Illinois bar exams, 93.5% of Chicago-Kent students passed, while 88.7% of all test-takers in the state succeeded.

Law 651 Sexual Orientation And The Law

Despite recent legal gains in the effort to protect gay men and lesbians from discrimination, societys attitude toward homosexuality continues to be ambivalent. This is particularly true in the areas of marriage and childbearing, but it is also true in a number of states where no protection is provided against public or private employment discrimination, or where openly gay teachers are restricted from teaching in the classroom. This seminar will establish a theoretical framework for approaching lesbian and gay issues by critically looking at various conceptions of homosexuality and societys justification for affecting behavior. It will then apply this understanding to the interaction between gays and the criminal justice system discrimination in public and private employment First Amendment issues posed by gay students and teachers in public schools and universities legal problems faced in same-sex relationships, including the issue of marriage and child custody and visitation rights, as well as the ability to become foster and adoptive parents.
