During the ceremony and parade, Chicago honored fallen heroes and Gold Star family members who have lost a loved on in the United States Armed Forces to combat operations or while on active duty,
“Wonderful. Love the military. We’re here to support them all,” said Charlene Bell.
“We are both from large military families and enjoy anything with the military, so this is great,” remarked Jim Parker.
A squad leader in the Vietnam War, Jim Hobson said he comes every year to honor the memories of those who died for this country.
“We should always remember the sacrifices that these men and women made,” said Hobson.
“Our citizens have never failed to answer the call to defend our nation against its enemies, giving everything to preserve the freedoms that we hold dear,” said Loh.
Memorial Day has a rich history, beginning shortly after the Civil War ended when Maj. Gen. John A. Logan proclaimed that the 30th day of May be designated for the purpose of decorating the graves of soldiers who died during the conflict. First observed on May 30, 1868 as “Decoration Day,” our modern day event has been expanded to honor all of our soldiers and service members who have fallen in the line of duty.

Lightscape At The Chicago Botanic Garden
The first stop on our 2022 holiday lights extravaganza was the Botanic Garden. Entrance into Lightscape is staggered and you can stay until 11 p.m. A lot of the weekend dates sell out, so consider going during the week to avoid the peak crowds.
Though Ive been to the show before, Jodi Zombolo, the Gardens associate vice president of visitor events and programs, said it will still be a new experience since about 80% of the show changes each year. But dont worry, fan favorites like the very-Instagrammable Winter Cathedral and the Fire Garden are back.
Some of the new displays are by international artists. Lightscape draws from places like Europe, the UK and Australia where light art as a form of work is much more prevalent, said Zoe Bottrell, the managing director of Culture Creative, which produces Lightscape.
One of the new features this year is a world premiere from French artist Pitaya called Spark Ballet. The display takes the idea of a ballerina from a music box and puts that into lanterns. Bottrell described the effect as like seeing fireflies caught inside a jar.
Visitors walk through a light installation titled, “Winter Cathedral,” at “Lightscape,” at the Chicago Botanic Garden, on Nov. 16, 2022, in Glencoe.
Theres no real theme to each lightscape season. Organizers instead focus on what makes the show unique: its location at the Botanic Gardens. Its very much about us telling the Gardens story and using the Gardens specific features, Bottrell said.

The Chicago airport community is poised to welcome more than 1.4 million travelers to the OHare and Midway International Airports between Thursday, May 26, and Tuesday, May 31, based on projections from airline carriers. OHare is expecting an increase of 47.4% over the same period last year, while Midway anticipates a 5% increase.
“For the first summer in three years, Chicago can comfortably welcome millions of visitors from around the globe to the quintessential events that define our city,” said Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. “Visitors and residents alike can take part in street festivals, parades, concerts, beach parties, ball games and more all season long.”

Travel Levels Increase To Pre
Memorial Day weekend travel is expected to be the busiest in two years, building on an upward trend that began earlier this spring. This years forecast marks the second-highest single-year increase in travelers since 2010 , bringing volumes almost in line with pre-pandemic levels.
Despite historic gas prices, which surpassed the $4 mark in early March, 34.9 million people plan to travel by car, up 4.6 percent over last year, according to AAA.
As of Tuesday morning, the statewide average for gas prices in Illinois was $4.973, but prices in the Chicago metro area were much higher, at $5.19 per gallon. In Cook County, the average price was $5.270 per gallon for regular gas, and in the City of Chicago, it hit $5.39 on Tuesday, according to AAA.
Meanwhile, the share of car travel fell from 92.1 percent last year to 88.9 percent this year, a slight indication that higher prices at the pump are having an impact on how people choose to travel this Memorial Day, according to AAA.
With more people planning to travel this summer, AAA recommends booking flights, car rentals, cruises, hotels and more as early as possible. Finding last-minute deals is “unlikely” and availability is filling up. Here is a look at what to expect for travel costs this summer:

Memorial Day Weekend In Chicago
Memorial Day weekend marks the official start of summer in Chicago. and the city knows how to celebrate. Each year, Chicago comes to life with spectacular fireworks displays, buzzing rooftop bars, sunset kayak tours, fun neighborhood festivals, waterfront restaurants with unforgettable views, and so much more. Heres our roundup of what to do in Chicago for Memorial Day weekend 2022.
Zoolights At Lincoln Park Zoo
This event is one of the more affordable options on our list, though some attractions cost additional tickets, like the carousel, train, Ferris wheel, light maze and a fire pit where you can toast up some smores.
You can snap a photo with Santa through Dec. 23, see live ice carving on Fridays and Saturdays, or catch some Christmas carolers on Sundays before Christmas.
Visitors ride a lighted Ferris wheel on Nov. 22, 2022, during the Lincoln Park Zoo’s annual Zoo Lights event.
We picked a later entrance time and happened to go on a chilly night before the week was set to warm up, so the zoo wasnt crowded. Hot chocolate was essential to stay warm, and popping into the zoo buildings to see some animals also helped keep us from freezing. Most of the animals were sleeping, but we did get to see some apes snuggling together in their slumber.
But do note that some of the zoo buildings close before the overall event ends at 10 p.m., so make sure to time your route. We raced through the Regenstein African Journey building 10 minutes before it closed so we could see the giraffes.
Standout displays include a color-changing light tunnel near the entrance, a fire-breathing dragon and a beautifully simplistic Chicago skyline display.
ZooLights also offers special events like a sensory-friendly night on Dec. 14, BrewLights on Dec. 1, a tribute to A Charlie Brown Christmas on Dec. 11, the Holidaze adult night on Dec. 15 and a New Years Eve event on Dec. 31.
