Chicago O Hare Intl Airport

Medal Of Honor Citation

Chicago O’Hare International #Airport [ORD] Live!

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in aerial combat, at grave risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, as section leader and pilot of Fighting Squadron 3 on February 20, 1942. Having lost the assistance of his teammates, Lieutenant O’Hare interposed his fighter between his ship and an advancing enemy formation of 9 attacking twin-engine heavy bombers. Without hesitation, alone and unaided, he repeatedly attacked this enemy formation, at close range in the face of intense combined machine gun and cannon fire. Despite this concentrated opposition, Lieutenant O’Hare, by his gallant and courageous action, his extremely skilful marksmanship in making the most of every shot of his limited amount of ammunition, shot down 5 enemy bombers and severely damaged a sixth before they reached the bomb release point. As a result of his gallant actionone of the most daring, if not the most daring, single action in the history of combat aviationhe undoubtedly saved his carrier from serious damage.

Food Shops & Amenities

There are many options for shopping and dining around the ORD airport. Some notable shops and restaurants include Brookstone, Americas Dog and Berghoff Cafe in Terminal 1 Duty Free Store, Argo Tea, and Chilis Too in Terminal 2 Brighton, Bubbles Wine Bar, and Gold Coast Dogs in Terminal 3 and Dufry, Big Bowl, and Burger King in International Terminal 5.

O’hare Gets A New Entrance

As fancy as every expansion element has been so far, the Terminal Area Plan is not yet finished, as O’Hare will also be getting a new entrance on its west side that will connect with Route 390 and I-490. Both toll roads are currently already under construction and are slated to be completed sometime in 2025.

However, there is a slight twist, as the entrance might not initially be for the public but more for the employees as the new entrance includes an eight-story employee parking facility and a screening facility with transport to the different terminals. The lack of plans for public use at the moment comes as the Chicago Department of Aviation is still working with the state on western entranceway logistics.

What do you think of O’Hare’s expansion project? Let us know in the comments below.

Arrival Of Passenger Service And Subsequent Growth

Scheduled passenger service began in 1955, but growth was slow at first. Although Chicago had invested over $25 million in O’Hare, Midway remained the world’s busiest airport and airlines were reluctant to move until highway access and other improvements were completed. The April 1957 Official Airline Guide listed 36 weekday departures from the airport, while Midway had 414. Improvements began to attract the airlines: O’Hare’s first international terminal opened in August 1958, and by April 1959 the airport had expanded to 7,200 acres with new hangars, terminals, parking and other facilities. The expressway link to downtown Chicago, now known as the Kennedy Expressway, was completed in 1960. And new Terminals 2 and 3, designed by C. F. Murphy and Associates, opened on January 1, 1962.

O’Hare had four runways in 1955 8,000 foot runway 14R opened in 1956 and was extended to 11,600 feet a few years later, allowing nonstops to Europe. Runway 9R/27L opened in 1968 and runway 4R/22L in 1971.

All Flights In One Terminal

While the first two phases of the Terminal Area Plan already seem huge, it’s about to get bigger as the project involves a crucial centerpiece named the Global Terminal. The centerpiece involves demolishing the existing Terminal 2 and replacing it with a ‘global terminal’ infrastructure.

As the name itself states, the new terminal will be relatively unique as it will be a single infrastructure that accepts both domestic and international flights together. Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Jamie Rhee highlighted:

“When it opens, the O’Hare Global Terminal will be one of the most transformative terminal investments in America, more than doubling the amount of space of the existing Terminal 2, and allowing for the integration of international and domestic operations for our hub carriers United and American Airlines.”

With the Global Terminal, O’Hare would be the first ‘global alliance hub’ within the US as the new terminal will see domestic and international carriers partnering together in the same terminal. Additionally, passengers connecting to international flights no longer have to ride the People Mover to Terminal 5, currently known as the international terminal.

Demolition of Terminal 2 is scheduled to begin sometime in 2026, and the Global Terminal is expected to complete in 2030. Designing this project centerpiece is a team that involves renowned Chicago architect Jeanne Gang, who described the design of the Global Terminal to be:

Final Mission And Death

Enterprise

Faced with U.S. daylight air superiority, the Japanese quickly developed tactics to send torpedo-armed Mitsubishi G4M “Betty” bombers on night missions from their bases in the against the U.S. aircraft carriers. In late November they launched these low-altitude strikes almost nightly to attack Enterprise and other American ships, so Rear Admiral Arthur W. Radford, O’Hare and Commander Tom Hamilton, CV-6 air officer, were deeply involved in developing ad hoc counter-tactics, the first carrier-based night fighter operations of the U.S. Navy. O’Hare’s plan required the carrier’s Fighter Director Officer to spot incoming enemy formations at a distance and send a “Bat Team” section consisting of a Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bomber and two Grumman F6F Hellcat fighters toward the Japanese intruders. Although improvements in new types of aviation radar were soon forthcoming from the engineers at MIT and the electronic industry, the available primitive radars in 1943 were very bulky, attributed to the fact that they contained vacuum tube technology. Radars were carried only on the roomy TBF Avengers, but not on the smaller and faster Hellcats, so the radar-equipped TBF Avenger would lead the Hellcats into position behind the incoming bombers, close enough for the F6F pilots to spot visually the blue exhaust flames of the Japanese bombers. Finally, the Hellcats would close in and shoot down the torpedo-carrying bombers.

Plans to build a new $7 billion Terminal 2 at OHare Airport took a big step forward last week a sign thats potentially good for Chicago and the worlds air travelers.

The current domestic terminal, built in the 1960s, would be razed and replaced with a larger facility built for international flights as well.

And rather than being a pass-through between travel points, officials promise the new global terminal will be a destination itself, designed to feel like a neighborhood with shops, restaurants and a central space for gathering, live music and events.

Watch: Busy Thanksgiving Travel Week Begins

“Today’s news from the FAA gives us a clear path forward to start construction on the Terminal Area Plan which includes Satellite Concourses 1 and 2 and the O’Hare Global Terminal, the centerpieces of the capital improvement program we call O’Hare 21,” said Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee of the CDA, which owns and operates

both O’Hare and Midway International Airports.

The FAA’s decision clears the way for construction to begin on the satellite concourses and related airfield work when the ground thaws this spring. The current construction timeline calls for the first satellite concourse to be completed in 2027 and the second satellite concourse to reach completion in 2028, the mayor’s office said.

Demolition of Terminal 2, the airport’s oldest passenger facility, will occur in phases. The work is scheduled to begin in 2026, with a target completion date of 2030 for construction of the O’Hare Global Terminal. Construction of a large tunnel connecting passengers, baggage and utilities between the O’Hare Global Terminal and the satellite concourses is anticipated to begin in 2024 with a construction completion date of 2030, Lightfoot’s office said.

Buttigieg is in Chicago to highlight infrastructure investments and visit with O’Hare workers before touring and holding a town hall with students at the Aviation Institute of Maintenance.

Gemini Jets Airport Update Chicago O’Hare International Airport ORD

CHICAGO The federal government is giving the green light to a massive construction project at O’Hare International Airport.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visited the airport on Monday to announce details on O’Hare’s new global terminal.

“We’re living in a time when folks understand more and more of the importance of our airports for supply chains as well as for passenger travel,” Buttigieg said. “And we’ve got to make sure both of those are running as efficiently as possible. That’s part of what this new terminal is going to be part of.”

Renderings were released of the new global terminal that will eventually replace terminal two.

The FAA signed off on the project after completing an environmental impact study.

The project also includes two satellite concourses adding even more gates.

Construction is slated to get underway next spring.

Chicagos Ohare International Airport Expansion Gets Final Approval

Following the completion of a four-year environmental study, the Federal Aviation Administration has approved a massive expansion of OHare International Airport that will include the construction of new terminals, gates, and hotels.

Todays news from the FAA gives us a clear path forward to start construction on the Terminal Area Plan which includes Satellite Concourses 1 and 2 and the OHare Global Terminal, the centerpieces of the capital improvement program we call OHare 21, said Commissioner Jamie L. Rhea of the Chicago Department of Aviation, which owns and operates the airport.

The expansion is expected to start with two new satellite concourses, providing an estimated 1.3 million square feet of gate and amenity space.

As I said when the President asked me to take on this job, dont let anybody tell you that OHare cant be romantic, said U.S Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, which was met with chuckles from the audience. Buttigieg was at the airport to announce some federal investment at a press conference.

The project will also include the demolition and replacement of the airports oldest terminal, as well as a look into the use of angled runways to allow for multiple take-offs at the same time.

OHare is a powerhouse that, in return, makes Chicago and Chicagoland a powerhouse for the American economy, Buttigieg continued. That is what we are talking about today jobs, jobs, and jobs.
