Chicago O Hare United Terminal

Shopping At The Chicago Airport

Chicago O’Hare Airport United Terminal

Unlike some other major international airports around the world, the shopping at Chicago OâHare is not very extensive. Every terminal has a Duty Free store, with alcohol, designer perfume, high-end chocolates, and Chicago souvenirs that you can purchase without tax with a valid boarding pass. Domestic terminals all have a Barbaraâs Bookstore and a Sunglass Hut, and all terminals have multiple Hudson News & Gifts shops, where you can buy magazines, books, snacks, and flight essentials such as pillows and headphones. Each terminal also has an âOops! Diapers 2Goâ vending machine.

There is a Brooks Brothers in Terminal 3, and a Brookstone in Terminals 1, 3, and 5.

For gifts, visit the Field Museum in Terminal 1 or the I Love Chicago store in Terminal 5. If you forgot a charger or other electronic device, head to InMotion in Terminals 1 and 3. And if youâre traveling with kids, they might like the Lego vending machine in Terminal 2.

The only designer stores in OâHare are the COACH and MAC Cosmetics in Terminal 2, and the Oakley store in Terminal 1.

Security and Customs at ORD

OâHare is a busy airport, but security generally moves quickly. The average wait time is 15 minutes, though rarely during busy travel periods can be up to 40 minutes. There are 10 security checkpoints across the four terminals, each with designated pre-check lines.

It is generally advised to arrive at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight and 2-3 hours before an international flight. Arrival Of Passenger Service And Subsequent Growth

Scheduled passenger service began in 1955, but growth was slow at first. Although Chicago had invested over $25 million in O’Hare, Midway remained the world’s busiest airport and airlines were reluctant to move until highway access and other improvements were completed. The April 1957 Official Airline Guide listed 36 weekday departures from the airport, while Midway had 414. Improvements began to attract the airlines: O’Hare’s first international terminal opened in August 1958, and by April 1959 the airport had expanded to 7,200 acres with new hangars, terminals, parking and other facilities. The expressway link to downtown Chicago, now known as the Kennedy Expressway, was completed in 1960. And new Terminals 2 and 3, designed by C. F. Murphy and Associates, opened on January 1, 1962.

O’Hare had four runways in 1955 8,000 foot runway 14R opened in 1956 and was extended to 11,600 feet a few years later, allowing nonstops to Europe. Runway 9R/27L opened in 1968 and runway 4R/22L in 1971.

Work On O’hare Parking Garage For International Terminal Will Cause Traffic Delays City Warns

Travelers urged to consider Blue Line to O’Hare as alternative to driving

City officials are warning that traffic and parking at O’Hare airport could become more difficult, as work begins on the terminal 5 garage.

CHICAGO — The Chicago Department of Aviation is warning travelers of traffic congestion and delays near O’Hare Airport as work on a new, six-story parking garage next to the international terminal ramps up on Tuesday.

City officials are advising travelers and visitors there will be limited parking availability in Lot D, next to the international terminal, also known as Terminal 5. Also, the existing pedestrian bridge connecting Lot D to Terminal 5 will close Tuesday and a temporary walkway will be put in place.

Travelers are urged to allow for extra time for parking in Lot D, or consider other options. Economy Lot F, north of the terminal in the Multi-Modal Facility, is just minutes from Terminal 5 on the Airport Transit System, commonly called the people mover.

Travelers can also use the Kiss ‘n’ Fly at the Multi-Modal Facility to drop off departing passengers, or use the cell phone lot to wait for arriving passengers.

Or, avoid driving to the airport entirely and opt for public transit, such as the CTA, or use a taxi or a ride-hailing service, such as Lyft or Uber.
