What Happened To The Family
Burgess is telling her doctor that she has no plans to get pregnant again before Ruzek returns. Theyre still not dating, but theyre still not dating other people either. She doesnt see anything wrong with that.
But Chicago PD pivots quickly when they nearly hit a young girl walking unattended through traffic. Shes clearly traumatized as she wont say a word to Burgess, who finds her name written in her shirt. Ruzek calls the district with that information, and they go to take the girl homebut Kim sees a bullet hole in the front window and a lot of blood. Ruzek and Burgess force entry to find the girls family murdered.
The rest of Intelligence arrives on the scene. Ruzek briefs Hank Voight on what he describes as absolute overkill. Kevin Atwater adds that he doesnt believe it was a robbery as they found money laying out in the home. So who slaughtered an entire family and why would they kill three people?
But here comes another shocker: Chicago PD has recruited Chicago Justices Richard Brooks to guest star! Not as Paul Robinette, but as another cop with experience in child-related cases. He tells Burgess to stay on the case since she was the girls first contact. How am I supposed to make this kid feel safe after what happened? Kim asks Trudy Platt . But if anyone can do it, its Kim Burgess.
Why It Might Have Been Too Soon
Neither Upton nor Halstead are exactly known for having emotional heart-to-hearts about their feelings on a weekly basis, and we havent often seen them hinting at romantic feelings directly to each other. Upton admitted she loved Halstead, but not to Halstead, and she didn’t explicitly say it was romantic. As for Halstead, he freely admitted to missing Upton to Trudy. They toed the line in the Season 7 finale over the phone, and there was even wiggle room in “Tender Age” up until the kiss.
Uptons comment about not seeing Halstead as a partner for a long time could have even been interpreted as friendly, and she almost walked back her earlier comment about not wanting to leave Chicago because of him by adding Voight and 21 as reasons to stay. Seriously, when Halstead swooped in at the end of the episode, I 100% thought he was going in for a hug. And even that would have been a big step forward on the Upstead front! The partners really went from not giving each other any straight answers to all but making out in a bar in Tender Age.”
On the flip side of Upton and Halstead taking this big step at the speed of light in just one episode, there are other ways that the timing really makes sense from a story perspective.

A full synopsis of Chicago P.D. Season 8, Episode 3 has been released by NBC ahead of the big night. It airs for the first time on Wednesday, January 13.
Ruzek and Burgess discover a child walking alone in the middle of the street, and when they take her home, they discover that her entire family has been murdered Upton is approached with a job offer from the FBI.
It sounds like the writers are going to jump right into the thick of things with this new episode and that we are going to get a shocking revelation before the opening credits even finish running.
And this job offer to Upton is a callback to what happened last season when the character crossed over to an episode of FBI on CBS.
Is Chicago Pd Moving Too Quickly With Upton And Halstead In Season 8
Warning: spoilers ahead for the third episode ofChicago P.D.Season 8, called Tender Age.
Chicago P.D.returned to television in 2021 to deliver a huge jump forward when it comes to Upton and Halstead, whose romantic burn up until Tender Age was slow even by procedural standards. While the A plot of the episode focused on Burgess, the Upstead-centric B plot started off with Halstead finding out about the FBI job offer that would take Upton to New York if she accepted and ended with a big kiss that was more than three slow but steady seasons in the making.
Ive been on board with Upton and Halstead’s relationship moving forward, but I find myself wondering: did the big kiss happen too quickly from a story perspective? Im of two minds about it, so lets break it down, starting with why it might have been too fast before getting into why the timing might have been just right.

Chicago Pd Season 8 Episode 3 Review: Tender Age
Intelligence is kicking off 2021 on a high note.
Following Atwater’s powerful storyline, Chicago PD Season 8 Episode 3 shook things up and reminded fans of the good old days when the focus remained largely on the case-of-the-week.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen the team go full-in on a case, especially one as compelling as the murder of Makayla’s entire family.
While gang retribution was the go-to motive, the case took a surprising twist when it was revealed that all three family members died protecting the little girl from her father, Tareek, who was recently released from prison.
The case was interesting even without a personal connection, but hinging the plot on a young, innocent girl not only provided an emotional hook, but it also allowed the narrative to revisit Burgess’ miscarriage from Chicago PD Season 7.
Burgess: That’s the good thing about being scared. Sometimes it’s like this reminder that you have to be brave, you have to fight. So I fought. Makayla: But I ran.
- Permalink: That’s ok. Running is a kind of fighting.
Voight was determined to nail down a suspect and get justice for the family, so the “by the book” police reform storyline kind of went out the window. Sometimes, I wonder if the series even remembers the plotlines it’s introducing.
There wasn’t even any reference to Atwater’s situation with the racist cops it’s almost as if it never happened.
However, it was nice to see that Burgess was still dealing with the aftermath of the miscarriage.
Chicago Pd Season 8 Episode : Tender Age Marks Winter Premiere
Chicago P.D. Season 8, Episode 3 got delayed a week, but it is now ready to air Wednesday night on NBC.
The first Chicago P.D. 2021 episode is called Tender Age and it might help the characters on the show enter some new plotlines.
Through the first two episodes of the season, a lot of the focus was on Kevin Atwater and the fight he was waging against a large portion of the department.
The Atwater storyline was supposed to play out toward the end of Season 7, but a lot of it had to be scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic. That led to an adjusted season finale as Atwater came home to find his block surrounded by cops.

Chicago Pd Season 8 Episode 3 Recap
This weeks Chicago PD started off with a brutal triple homicide and ended up in a completely different place.
Wednesdays episode Tender Age involved Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek finding a child, who was the only survivor of what appeared to be a drug-related murder spree.
Meanwhile, Hailey Upton got a job offer from the FBI, leading her to make a huge decision about that thing shed been putting off since last midseason.

Why The Timing Might Have Been Just Right
As much as the Upstead moment in the bar was a huge leap forward that skipped smaller steps, the rushed nature of it in “Tender Age” actually made a lot of sense. If left to their own devices, Upton and Halstead might have kept circling each other for another two seasons or so unless he went and got himself shot again, but the job offer meant that something had to give, especially once Halstead came clean and admitted that Upton giving him the details would be ripping off the band-aid.”
Halstead never got around to specifically saying that he didnt want her to go even as Upton gave him every opening, and shes the one who took them past the point of no return with the admission that she saw him as more than a partner, but something had to happen. It was, as Chicago P.D. boss Rick Eid said in previewing Upsteads story in 2021, a catalyst.
Honestly, kudos to Upton for making some bold statements when Halstead seemed pretty determined to try and support her without admitting that he didnt want her to leave. Fans have known that Halstead was concerned about her taking a job in New York ever since he confessed to missing her last season, but he wasn’t saying it to her this week!
So, whats the verdict on whether or not this Upton/Halstead twist happened too quickly? Here’s where I fall on it.

The Verdict On Upstead
At the end of the day, I do find myself wishing that the official jump from partners to something more was drawn out for at least another couple episodes, but this Upstead development does make sense from a story standpoint. Also, I have to admit that a lot of my gut reactions to TV relationships are directly related to watching The X-Files during my formative years, so major relationship advances that happen in less than seven or so years and not involving bees can feel rushed. The Upstead hookup happened quickly, but not necessarily too quickly.
Upton and Halstead kissing and presumably moving into an actual relationship does make me wonder if Burgess and Ruzeks relationship is going to remain platonic for the time being, unless Chicago P.D. plans on having four out of the five cops in Voights unit dating each other, at least until the new character joins and bumps the Intelligence count up to six. Showrunner Rick Eid did share with CinemaBlend that motherhood is on Burgess mind, but only time will tell if Ruzek is involved in that scenario for her.
See what happens next on the Upstead front with the next new episode of Chicago P.D., airing on Wednesday, January 27 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC following Chicago Fire at 9 p.m. ET and Chicago Med at 8 p.m. ET. For more of whats on the way, check out our 2021 winter and spring premiere schedule.
