Chicago Park District Summer Camp

Chicago Park District Plans Abbreviated Summer Camp Season

Chicago Park District Summer Day Camp Registration Opens Online Thursday

The Chicago Park District is moving forward with the possibility of offering a portion of its regular summer camps after the COVID-19 pandemic derailed the schedule.

On social media and in a letter to parents who previously enrolled their kids in similar programs, this past week park district officials shared plans for the modified schedule and important dates for parents. All summer programs, including summer camp, will start July 6 assuming no new or additional restrictions are called for under any modifications to the state stay-at-home mandate, which helps determine what the Park District can offer.

The Park District first made the announcement Friday, after Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced modifications to the stay-at-home order through May 31.

Summer programs will be listed online beginning June 1 so caregivers have a chance to evaluate the offerings. Online registration, often competitive with classes and programs filling up within minutes, will be held June 11 and 12. Some spaces in each program are held back so those without internet access can register in person. In-person registration will be on June 13 unless in-person interactions are not being allowed by the state, the news release said.

It was not immediately clear what other programs might be offered.

Check back for updates.

Chicago Park District Offers New Summer Camp Program For Teens

Teens can learn to build fire, set up tents, and work as a team as part of the new Chicago Park District program.

This summer, the Chicago Park District offers a camping program for teenagers.

Participants will learn some basic skills needed for outdoor camping for a week. At the end of the week, they tested their newly discovered knowledge by camping overnight in the park.

One skill they learn: making fire.

Jonathan Hernandez, one of the 14 participants in the Urban Campers Program, said: One of the things I want to learn is how to make a tent because Ive never camped before.

He is not the only one.

Nadia Campbell has come to the program as another new camper. I was worried that the cold would make me crazy about camping and make a mistake in setting up my tent, she said.

Program coordinator Liz Holly says the new program will give children in the city the opportunity to explore what they need to camp in the great outdoors. Under the sky of Urban Camper and Illinois, We give children the opportunity to record adventures, explore nature and educate their environment in their parks.

This is the first time the park district has offered such a program to older children. In this program, you can make fire, set up tents, work in teams and enjoy sleeping under the stars.

Thats what the program coordinator expects.

We wanted to be as safe and careful as possible, and we also know the benefits of being outdoors and having plenty of breathing space, she said.
