Chicago Park District Sept/Oct 2008 Active: Learn to Swim

On June 22, the Park District is inviting kids and families to its 76 swimming pools across the city as part of an international effort to spread awareness about the importance of teaching children to swim to prevent drowning.

Hundreds of Chicago swimmers participated in the record-setting Worlds Largest Swimming Lesson in June 2014, an event that drew 36,564 people in 22 countries. This summer, swimmers in Chicago and across the globe are hoping to reach a new high watermark.

More important than setting a new record, the Park District says, is educating parents and families that swimming is a critical life skill with many health benefits — and that it saves lives. Drowning remains the leading cause of unintended, injury-related death for children ages 1-5.

Despite the risk, a survey conducted by the American Red Cross in 2014 found that 54 percent of Americans either cannot swim or dont have all of the basic swimming skills. Research shows that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children ages 1-4.

Swimming lessons for Chicago kids and families are still available this summer through the Park District. More information about registering for swim lessons is available on the Park Districts website.

To register for the Worlds Largest Swimming Lesson, . The event takes place at 6 p.m. June 22.

Chicagos Cool Wet Weather Makes Swim Lessons Beach Time More Uncomfortable Than Refreshing

When it came time to enroll her children in summer swim lessons, Betsy Rickard chose a lake instead of a pool, pointing to the parallel between life and the ever-changing environment of open water: Its hard to know what to expect when conditions constantly are in flux.

The lesson came through, clear as ice, to her shivering 8-year-old daughter, Beatrice, who struggled to warm herself Monday in Crystal Lake, where temperatures were 62 degrees when swimming began. She was one of scores of kids who started June swim lessons in weather more commonly associated with May and April. Because of the unseasonably cool weather, Chicagos shoreline has been emptier than usual and outdoor swim instructors throughout the area have had to adjust their plans and procedures to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Everything isnt easy all the time, so I think its part of preparing them for the future, said Rickard, 40, a Crystal Lake resident and mother of four. Swimming in a pool, the climate is generally controlled and it is the same no matter what pool you use. In a lake, I think it makes you a heartier swimmer dealing with cold, or a current, and not being able to see the bottom.

Though the National Weather Service in Chicago most closely tracks weather inland at Chicago OHare International Airport, where it has been considerably warmer than near the lake, even there temperatures have been 2.5 degrees cooler than usual for the month of June, forecasters said.

Aquatic centers will not open in 2021. It takes months of preparation to welcome visitors to our three aquatic centers each summer. Changing COVID-19 public health measures and uncertainty this winter and spring made this preparation impractical, and we made the difficult decision to keep the aquatic centers closed for the entire 2021 season. Were sorry to miss another summer of fun with you and look forward to welcoming you back in 2022.
