Student And Teacher Protests
In 2013, Mayor Rahm Emanuel of Chicago initiated the closing of 54 public schools. Of the 54 public schools to be closed were 53 elementary schools and one high school. Mayor Rahm Emanuel claimed the school closings were a direct result from the nearly $1 billion deficit the city was facing due to under-enrollment at the schools. The schools to be closed were located on Chicago’s South and West sides which provided education to mainly African-American Students. The Mayors decision to close the schools was met with rage and feelings of injustice by the communities affected and the Chicago Teachers Union. As a result, the CTU and other education activities responded by protesting.

About Chicago Public Schools
Chicago Public Schools is an educational organization where students attend a particular school that is assigned to them depending upon where they live. CPS may seem more like a private company than an educational institution, since the head of CPS is known as the Chief Executive Officer instead of a superintendent, but the roles are basically the same. The organization has around 20 students per teacher in elementary schools in their system and just under 25 students per teacher in high school environments. There were over 41,000 staff positions in the 2013 school year, with over 22,000 of them being teachers. As you might imagine, most of the employment opportunities are teaching positions, but there are also counseling positions, press secretary positions, special education teachers, coaches and more.
The Chicago Public School started as a trading post in the early 1800s. It would be several years before a school system actually emerged from that outpost, but by 1848, the city realized that they needed the public school system and the formation of such an organization was approved by the City Council. As the city grew, so did the school district, with educational standards becoming stronger and more closely followed until Chicago Public Schools had become one of the nations leaders.

Chicago Public Schools Students Gain Valuable Career Experience Through Campus Internships
Before Dejiah Beatty started her summer internship at the University of Chicago, she shared with the selection committee her aspirations of one day becoming a neonatal surgeon. Beatty, a rising junior at Kenwood Academy high school who lives in Chicagos Fernwood neighborhood, was placed in the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering accordingly. For six weeks, she had an opportunity to dive into scientific work shes passionate about, connect with PME scientists, and even gather data from interviews with her own friends and family to inform future PME science communications and outreach efforts.
Its been a great resource thats opened up to me, Beatty says.
Beatty is one of 10 local high school students participating in the Office of Civic Engagements Youth Internship Program micropilot this summer and one of dozens of South Side high school students working as paid interns through programs across UChicagos campus.
Laura Rico-Beck, PME assistant dean of education and outreach and Beattys internship supervisor, says the internship has been an opportunity for Beatty to contribute to PMEs programmatic development and even help shape science education in her own community. As a participant in PMEs Teach Quantum program, for instance, Beatty was among a group of student evaluators who were asked to offer feedback to local high school teachers who have been working with PME faculty to develop curricula around the emerging quantum sciences.
