The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 1975 musicalcomedy horror film by 20th Century Fox, produced by Lou Adler and Michael White and directed by Jim Sharman. The screenplay was written by Sharman and actor Richard OBrien, who is also a member of the cast. The film is based on the 1973 musical stage productionThe Rocky Horror Show, with music, book, and lyrics by OBrien. The production is a parody tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the 1930s through to the early 1960s. Along with OBrien, the film stars Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Barry Bostwick and is narrated by Charles Gray with cast members from the original Royal Court Theatre, Roxy Theatre, and Belasco Theatre productions including Nell Campbell and Patricia Quinn.

The story centres on a young engaged couple whose car breaks down in the rain near a castle where they seek a telephone to call for help. The castle or country home is occupied by strangers in elaborate costumes celebrating an annual convention. They discover the head of the house is Dr. Frank N. Furter, an apparently mad scientist who actually is an alien transvestite from the planet Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania, who creates a living muscle man named Rocky in his laboratory.

The Rocky Horror Show Reviews

  • Highly Recommended
  • Not Recommended

Chicago Tribune – Recommended

“…To its great credit, Steve Hiltebrand’s pretty decent new Mercury Theatre production of “Rocky” is most assuredly live. The sound system is of dance-club quality and volume Matt DeYoung’s lights wouldn’t shame any rock band and Hiltebrand pumps fog into his audience’s faces and merrily swings his game actors from the balcony.”

SouthtownStar – Somewhat Recommended

“…Based on the 1975 cult classic film, “The Rocky Horror Show” arrives in time for the Halloween season at the Mercury Theater in Chicago. But the campy sci-fi gothic isn’t for everyone. With its nudity, everything-goes sexuality and raunchy style, it will outrage the sensitive theatergoer and thrill “Rocky Horror Picture Show” fans.”

Chicago Reader – Somewhat Recommended

“…Frank-n-Furter’s castle resembles a decadent nightclub complete with lots of skin, a frenetic lighting design, and incessant use of a fog machine. The atmosphere of slickly achieved raucousness wears thin pretty quickly, and in any case seems at odds with the sloppy amateur glee of the material.”

EpochTimes – Somewhat Recommended

“…There are some very memorable songs- beware, most of the audience knows every word, so they will sing along to: “Time Warp”, “Hot Patootie”,”Creature of The Night” and more. If you are prudish, miss this one! If you enjoy loudness and sexuality- grab your fishnets, your short shorts, a bra or boa and head over to the Wrigleyville area…”

Where To Find Rocky Horror In Chicago

Last Halloween, I reignited my teenage love of The Rocky Horror Picture Show when a friend suggested we check out a live performance of the 1975 cult classic. I hadnt been to one of the infamously interactive screenings in years, but the moment I saw those familiar red lips appear on the screen, it all came flooding back, and I suddenly longed for the fishnets and pearl necklace I had packed away long ago. This year, Im more determined than ever to see as much of Tim Curry in a corset as I possibly can, so these are my best bets for a very Rocky Halloween.
