Thomas Named Board Chair Of Chicago Zoological Society
The Chicago Zoological Society, which manages Brookfield Zoo, has announced Cherryl T. Thomas as its new chair of the board of trustees.
Thomas, a Chicago native, joined CZSs board in 1999 and over the past 22 years has supported the organization by serving on various committees. Most recently, she was vice chair of the board and co-chair of the community engagement and social innovation committee.
I am so pleased to be a part of animal conservation and efforts to preserve our fragile ecosystem, said Thomas in a press release. I look forward to collaborating with CZSs board of trustees and staff in advancing the societys mission, vision, and its master planning efforts.
Thomas is the chief strategy officer of Chicago-based Ardmore Roderick, a full-service engineering and construction management firm. Prior to that she was president and CEO of Ardmore Associates, which she co-founded in 2003.
Before starting her own engineering firm, Thomas worked in government for 34 years. She was appointed chair of the Chicago-based United States Railroad Retirement Board by President Bill Clinton from 1998 to 2003. She also has served in several leadership positions with the City of Chicago.

The Board of Trustees of the Chicago Zoological Society Friday announced Dr. Michael Adkesson, DVM, as its new President and CEO, and Director of Brookfield Zoo.
We are absolutely delighted Dr. Adkesson has accepted the leadership of the Society and Brookfield Zoo, Cherryl Thomas, Chair of the Board of Trustees, said in a news release. With his strong background in veterinary medicine, science, research and conservation and his training and experience in business and management, we are confident he will ensure Brookfield Zoo stays at the forefront of conservation, that it continues to be a beloved place in the hearts and minds of our visitors, and that he will take the organization forward into the future.
Adkessons appointment concludes a search for a successor to Dr. Stuart D. Strahl, who led the organization through dramatic change over the past 18 years. Adkessons appointment begins Oct. 15.
Although it is impossible to replace someone of the stature of Dr. Strahl, Dr. Adkesson has the vision, qualities, skills, and experience the Board was looking for to lead Brookfield Zoo to new heights, Thomas said in the release.

While thankfully a COVID-19 vaccine is not needed in pets or livestock at this time, we are proud that our work can help zoo animals at risk of COVID-19, Mahesh Kumar, senior vice president of global biologics at Zoetis.
Animals, like humans, will receive two doses of the vaccine, with each dose given three weeks apart. They are considered fully vaccinated two weeks following the second dose.
The zoo said it plans to closely monitor animals that do receive the vaccine.

“Due to the respectful and trusting relationships developed between the animals and care staff, many of the zoos animals voluntarily participate in their own health care, in this case holding still while veterinary staff administers the vaccination,” the zoo said in a release.
Once western lowland gorillas and Rodrigues fruit bats have been fully vaccinated, which is scheduled to be later this fall, the zoos Tropic World: Africa section and Australia House will reopen to guests, zoo officials said.
The Detroit Zoo began vaccinating animals late last month.

The Brookfield Zoo Library & Archives is primarily a zoological research facility with an extensive archive that begins with the early zoo history from 1919 and continues through the present day. It is accessible to all people zoo visitors, visiting scholars, volunteers, docents, teachers, school children, CZS Advanced Inquiry Program graduate students and employees in need of resources and information. The Archives house a variety of materials from its early history including an extensive photograph and slide collection from the construction of the zoo, its opening, and scientific photographic representation of its early animal collections.
Hallmark moments in CZS history are represented in the Archives. Early zoo construction features photographs of prominent Chicago architect Edwin H. Clarks zoo structures. He designed the zoos physical layout in the early 1920s and the elegant Art Deco buildings during the 1920s and 1930s. The photograph collection showcases the animals over time including the many firsts of the Chicago Zoological Society like Su-Lin the first panda to be exhibited in North America, first black rhino born in captivity, first okapi born in the United States, and first Southern hairy nosed wombat born outside of Australia to name a few.

BROOKFIELD, IL Brookfield Zoo has a new pack leader.
After a search lasting over a year and a half, the zoo announced Friday that Dr. Michael Adkesson, DVM, has been named Director of Brookfield Zoo, and President and CEO of the Chicago Zoological Society. His appointment will begin Friday, Oct. 15.
To be chosen as the President and CEO of a world-renowned institution of the significance of the Chicago Zoological Society is an absolute honor, Dr. Adkesson said. Im thrilled to have the opportunity to lead this great organization and build upon the zoos rich history of success in animal care and conservation. As one of Chicagolands top cultural institutions, Brookfield Zoo touches the lives of millions of people every year, inspiring them to conserve and protect animals and habitats. I will remain steadfast in the Societys commitment to providing the best in animal care and supporting its dedicated and passionate staff. The board has been searching for a new permanent director since February 2020, when longtime director Dr. Stuart D. Strahl announced his retirement.
