But when it comes to the deep-dish specialty pizza, weve found a handful of places where you can get the best deep-dish pizza in Chicago.

As we all know, pizzas humble origins begin in the gardens of Italy, where the freshest, sun-ripened tomatoes are puréed and accompanied by olive oil, garlic, oregano, and fresh basil. But over the years, the deep-dish has been perfected by other pizza joints, some truly stepping up their game. Here are a few.

BURT’S PLACE It was back in 2009 that renowned chef Anthony Bourdain visited and gave the local pizza place the boost it needed. Although Burt Katz, a legend in the pizza-making business, passed away a few years ago, Burt’s Place is still cranking out the deep-dish pizza to happy patrons.

GEORGE’S DEEP DISH What’s unique about George’s is that it’s a takeout counter-only type of pizza place. Where George’s differs is in its crust, which is more pastry-like than pizza crust-like. Customers seem to love it as the lines are always long to grab a slice of George.

Choosing A Deep Dish Pizza Place In Chicago

In my quest to discover the best deep dish pizza in Chicago, I managed to visit three pizza joints.

The first two served the classic Chicago-style pizza that has become one of the citys icons. The third was a mistake from start to finish so I wont be mentioning it here, and youll thank me for that. Still, choosing where to try the deep pan was a challenge all in itself.

Obviously, I turned to the internet, where I quickly drowned in lists of top 5s, top 10s and even a top 50. There were the original pizza places, the most popular, the with a twist, the craft-creators and the urban trendys. If I learned one thing from my pre-pie research its that everyone has an opinion and Chicago is not short on great pizza parlours to choose from.

This gave me some quandary until I returned to the root of the issue. I wanted to taste the original and I wanted to taste the best. That led me to two places: Unos and Giordarnos.

Unos, you will recognise as the restaurant that originally belonged to the brothers who invented Chicagos deep dish pizza. Established in 1943, the brand has exploded into a staggering-sized chain with over 100 restaurants around the world . However, the original restaurant still stands in its original spot in Chicago and it is there that I went for my first tasting.

And so my pizzeria choices were set.

Pequod’soriginator Of The Caramelized Crust

In 1971, in the Chicago suburb of Morton Grove, Burt Katz opened Pequods, his third pizza-making venture. One of the things that distinguished the pan pizzas at Pequods from all the other deep dish style pizza in the city was its caramelized crust.

A layer of Mozzarella cheese was sandwiched between the dough and the edges of the pan in which it was made. The bottom crust and all the tall crust along the tall edge of the pan formed a caramelized coating of cheese while the pizza baked in the oven.

Today, more than 50 years later, Pequods is still renowned for its special pies, and routinely wins awards for making some of Chicagos best pizza. Recently, their Italian Sausage Pan Pizza was chosen by The Food Network as one of the 5 best pizzas in the entire United States.

In addition to its original Morton Grove location, Pequods now has a second location, in Chicagos Lincoln Park neighborhood.
