How Do You Make A Chicago

What is the Best Way to Cook a Chicago-Style Hot Dog?

While the average Chicagoan is familiar with the condiments of a Chicago-style hot dog, many individuals are unfamiliar with the process of cooking one. To avoid a soggy and unappetizing dog, you should avoid cooking it in the microwave. Grab a pot and fill it with water.

Next, increase the heat on your stove to medium and boil the pot of water. Once the water is boiling, decrease the heat to a low setting and drop the hot dog in the water. Cook it for a total of 5 minutes on the stove.

Once the Chicago hot dog is finished, grab a plate and place a dry paper towel on it. Next, remove the cooked hot dog from the pot and place it on the plate. Prior to popular belief, its important to cook or steam a bun to prevent your Chicago hot dog from getting cold while its being assembled.

Grab a steamer basket and drop it into the pot and cook the hot dog bun for a total of 2 4 minutes. Once the hot dog and bun are cooked, its time to assemble the condiments. First, drop the hot dog in the cooked or steamed bun.

Next, add the mustard, neon green relish, diced onions, tomatoes, pickle, sports peppers, and celery salt to the Chicago-style hot dog. The tomato wedges should be added vertically between the hot dog and the bun to prevent it from falling. Also, drop the pickle directly next to the hot dog in the bun.

24 of the Best Hot Dogs in Chicago, Ranked

Post-Depression, the hot dog stuck. Chicago was a working class city, and the Chicago dog was an affordable, working class food. World War II veterans returned home and found opening a hot dog stand in the newly expanding suburbs was a great business opportunity. Soon, every neighborhood had a hot dog stand or two, many of which still exist today.

What I Looked For

Regardless of the toppings, the one trait all of my favorites have in common is a great hot dog. Most of the time that means an all-beef hot dog with a crisp natural casing from Vienna Beef . But even a natural casing isn’t a complete guarantee of success. Stands need a diligent owner to maintain high standards, so that each dog is juicy and not overcooked.

Freshness is also paramount for the toppings, especially if going with the fully loaded style. The onions, sport peppers, and the pickle spear should be crisp and crunchy, while the tomato slices should be red and juicy. Even layers of mustard and relish ensure a uniform bite. A final dusting of celery salt lends an unmistakable final touch, but too much mucks up the whole thing.

As you can probably tell, I have opinions.

An Ode To Hot Dougs Encased Meat Emporium

24 of the Best Hot Dogs in Chicago, Ranked

For decades these were easily the hippest pups in town, and until it closed in October 2014, it was my fave. The lines were still around the block, so it wasnt a financial matter, the owner, Doug Sohn, just wanted to move on.

This dinky but colorful joint said on its sign that it was the Sausage Superstore and even had its own theme song for which there are rock, techno, and other mixes. Sohn serves the classic Chicago Hot Dog of course, the obligatory Polies, but then there were the rabbit, boar, pheasant, duck, and kangaroo sausages. How about a venison sausage with sweet and spicy mustard and red wine soaked dried blueberries for $5.50? All the sandwiches were served in a cardboard boat so the bun is fluffy and the contents are not squished.

You could get your Vienna Beef dog boiled or grilled, and their standard prep included onions caramelized in butter for 90 minutes. Sohn said You cant go wrong adding butter to anything. Dont skip the very nice golden brown crispy fries, which, on Fridays and Saturdays are fried in flavorful duck fat.

The gregarious Sohn was often working the counter. A pleasant erudite character who, in a former life was a cookbook editor, he is also a bit of a rebel. When the City of Chicago banned foie gras, he continued to serve it until they served him with the Citys first foie gras summons.

No Gene & Judes And No Wiener Circle

Yes, yes, I went to Gene & Judes and Wiener Circle. Theyre not in my Top 5.

Gene & Judes has killer fries, a fine standard dog wrapped and smashed in paper, the lines are too long, and they are just plain rude. They got a good rating, but rudeness is what I expect in NY, not Chicago.

As for Wiener Circle, I appreciate the fact that they are open late and that people-watching is unmatched, but their schtick is the banter between the cooks and the crowd, much of it rude, mean, and flat out racist, and even though everybody says it is all in fun, Im not buying it. It makes me very uncomfortable.
