Places Not Included In The Requirement

Department Of Buildings Complaint
The City of Chicago Office of Inspector General has completed a follow-up to its April 2018 audit of the Department of Buildings complaint-based inspection operations. Based on the Departments responses, OIG concludes that DOB has partially implemented corrective actions related to the audit findings.
The purpose of the 2018 audit was to determine whether DOB met required deadlines for responding to building complaints, whether the Department effectively prioritized complaints, and whether the records of building code violations available to the public on the Citys Data Portal and DOBs Building Permit and Inspection Records web page were complete and accurate. Our audit found that DOB did not have effective strategies for prioritizing complaint-based inspections, which resulted in potential health and safety hazards going unaddressed for longer than allowed by the Municipal Code of Chicago , and that the Citys websites did not provide the public with a propertys complete violation history.

Online Permit Payments Are Highly Recommended
The Cook County Department of Building and Zoning provides permit customers the ability to pay their permit fees online. After your permit application has been approved, payment amount will be posted to the online building permit status search.
Applicants can pay their permit fees online with a MasterCard, VISA, Discover or American Express credit card through the departments Building Permit Status Search link.

Types Of Records Maintained By The Department Of Buildings
The Department of Buildings enforces the Chicago Building Code to protect the health, safety and welfare of Chicago’s residents and visitors. The Department issues all construction and demolition permits in the City of Chicago. The Department also cites potentially hazardous buildings, encourages repair through enforcement action, and coordinates demolition when necessary. Permit Expiration And Request For Extension
If work authorized by a permit is not completed within twelve months of its issuance, such permit shall become invalid until an extended permit has been taken out by the Owner or his agent at a fee of 10% of the original permit cost or $25, whichever is greater. An extended permit shall be valid for six months following the date of expiration of the original permit and must be applied for within ten days after the expiration of the original permit. Unless otherwise determined by the Building Commissioner, one extension only shall be granted, and if work has not been completed within 18 months after the date of issuance of the original permit, all rights under the permit shall thereupon terminate. Where, under authority of a permit or extended permit, work has begun and has been abandoned for a continuous or cumulative period of 12 months, all rights under such permit shall thereupon terminate.
