Wait For A Delayed Pickup

Trash Talking in Gary

The first option is, of course, to just wait. If your pickup was missed because of inclement weather, a holiday, or another regional cause , then chances are the city is well aware of the issue, and will solve it as soon as possible.

If it was a holiday, there might be a rescheduled pickup the next day, or it may be put off for the next week either way, it wont be a massive problem. Of course, the inconvenience is never pleasant, so you may want to look into other options.

Neighbor Complaints About Bins

From time to time, our office receives complaints about neighbors garbage bins – blocking their garage, being overflowing, blocking access to alley, etc. If you have a concern about your neighbors garbage bin, first we recommend reaching out to your neighbor to try to resolve the issue. Oftentimes, these issues can be resolved with a direct conversation. If youve reached out to your neighbor and the issue still persists, feel free to reach out to our office. We will investigate the issue, reach out to the neighbor directly, and potentially connect you with mediation services.

Report A Missed Pickup

City to revive holiday trash pickup

Chicago allows you to call 311 or use the citys online 311 system. The online system is found here. Using either system, you can report a missed pickup, either for yourself or for your whole alley. You can report a missed pickup and have a new one scheduled, and you can sign up for reminders for your pickup schedule in case you miss the date and want that reminder.

In general, the citys 311 service is pretty useful. You can report all kinds of problems and have the city handle them, from roadkill to noise complaints to hazardous materials testing and a whole lot more. It should be one of your first stops whenever you have a problem the city normally handles, honestly. There are plenty of reasons to gripe about how the city administration manages services, but trash removal is not generally one of them.

Something Obstructed Your Bin

Trash trucks throughout Chicago either use automated arms to lift and dump bins, or they require workers to do it. In either case, the truck needs access to the bins to empty them.

Thats fine most of the time, but what happens if, say:

  • Someone parks in front of your bins?
  • Snow piled up makes them inaccessible?
  • Does an accident cause them to tip?
  • Heavy rain makes it impossible to see?

If workers cannot see or access the bins, theyll either be forced to skip them or will simply miss them. In either case, when everyone around you had their trash removed, and yours is still there, its a hassle.

Usually, this isnt the fault of the workers. Sanitation workers do their best, and sometimes unavoidable circumstances make them unable to do their job. We cast no blame on them its a hard job, and were lucky to have them doing it.

Under The New Contract The Company Known As Lrs Will Collect Blue Recycling Carts With Less Than 50 Percent Contamination In Four Of Chicagos Six Recycling Regions The Company Replaces Waste Management And Sims Metal Management

2021 City of Chicago Waste Strategy

The company, also known as LRS was the lowest of four bidders for the long-awaited city contract.

Sun-Times file

Lake Shore Recycling will collect blue recycling carts with less than 50% contamination in four of Chicagos six recycling regions, under a three-year, $79.6 million contract authorized by Mayor Lori Lightfoots administration.

The company known as LRS was the lowest of four bidders for the long-awaited contract. But thats not the only reason it won the high-stakes competition.

Lake Shore Recycling also has more recycling assets than any other company in the Chicago area, including a state-of-the-art, single-stream recycling facility that can sort cardboard, mixed paper, glass, steel, other metals and plastics, according to City Hall.

The contract allows for penalties for missed collection and has a greater clarification around contamination. We believe these will help improve recycling rates, Streets and Sanitation Commissioner John Tully was quoted as saying in a press release.

Theres no place to go but up. After decades of failure, Chicagos recycling rate still hovers around 8% or 9%.

As part of DSS commitment to improve recycling rates, LRS will collect recycling with less than 50% contamination. This will ensure that more waste is getting recycled, the press release states.

Recycling contracts with Waste Management and SIMS Metal Management that expired years ago, only to be extended repeatedly a year at a time, were finally re-bid last year.

Snow And Leaf Removal

Snow Removal: Chicago Municipal Code, sections 4-4-310 and 10-8-180, specifies that both homes and businesses must clear snow from sidewalks next to their property. Make Chicago safe for everyone by clearing snow and ice from the public sidewalks around your property. Without a wide, clear path, snow and ice on the sidewalk make it difficult for everyone especially people with disabilities, seniors, and children to walk safely. Read Chicago Sidewalk Snow Removal Guide.

Be a good neighbor and offer help to those in your community who are physically unable to clear their own sidewalks. To read FAQs on snow removal see the Citys webpage.

To volunteer for the 40th Wards Shoveling Squad, contact Solutions@40thward.org.

Leaf Removal: Street drains can quickly get clogged with leaves and other street debris and flood. Please tell your neighbors and landscape companies NOT to rake leaves into the street and gutters. If you do see leaves and debris on top of street drains or catch basins, just rake or sweep up and bag this debris, and dispose in the trash or compose in a yard. Otherwise, the debris could clog the sewer structure. If ponding water remains even after removing leaves and debris from the surface grates, contact our office, and well get the City to schedule the unclogging.

Garbage And Recycling Bins

Chicago residential buildings with four or fewer units are eligible for city scavenging service and city recycling . Large residential buildings, non-profits, and commercial buildings must provide their own trash pick-up and recycling services.

Black carts are picked up weekly, normally on the same day of the week. The majority of the ward gets picked up on Thursdays and Fridays, but pick-ups also occur on Tuesdays south of Addison. Blue carts are picked up every two weeks, but not necessarily the same day of the week every time. Please note holidays may impact pick-up schedules.

If you receive city pick-up, you may request new bins or maintenance to current bins. In general, these requests take 2-3 weeks to fulfill. Please feel free to reach out to our office if your request has been outstanding for 5 or more weeks, so that we can follow-up with the department to check on the status. If you find that you need an additional blue cart, an existing black garbage cart may eventually be taken away to manage space in the alley. There is no charge for the addition or removal of carts.

Steps

If you need help submitting your request through 311s online portal, view our help article on submitting service requests.

Throwing Away Large Items

If you receive city garbage pick-up, Streets and Sanitation will pick-up furniture and other large items with your regular pick-up. If you do not receive city pick-up, you may seek a private service to pick-up your item. We are not able to make special pick-ups for these items, so we recommend placing the item on the curb or in the alley on your regular pick-up day. If you do place the item out ahead of time, please do not block the public way. Furniture or other large items that block access to alleys or sidewalks may result in tickets. If your item is especially big , we recommend calling our office ahead of item, so we let Streets and Sanitation know to expect the item.

Hire A Junk Removal Service

Portage Park Resident Upset About Garbage That Seems To Be Everywhere

If your trash pickup was missed, and there was no reason for it to be ignored or rejected, you should work with the city to solve the problem. On the other hand, if you have bricks, construction debris, demolition debris, hazardous materials, heavy materials, or large volumes of materials, you cant just put it all out by the road and expect the city to clear it away.

Your best option, in this case, is to hire a junk removal service. There are a few different ways you can do this, from renting a dumpster and filling it to calling us.

Obviously, were a little biased, but we think were just about the best option if you need fast junk removal. Just a small pile? A whole room demo? House clear-out? Well handle any and all of it. Weve seen it all, and weve hauled it all away.

All you need to do is reach out to us through one of our many contact options. Chat with us and discuss what you have to get rid of and how much there is, and well give you an estimate to have it cleared away. Well recycle anything we can, salvage and donate what can be returned to the community, and properly dispose of the rest. Whats not to love?

So, if you have trash that needs to be picked up and the city wont do it, give us a call, and well be happy to help.
