Chicago Rental Assistance Deadline Extended To June 15
The application period for the Chicago Emergency Rental Assistance Program has been extended through June 15. The program, administered through the City of Chicagos Department of Housing, provides rental assistance to eligible community members who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
ERAP will provide funds of up to 12 months of unpaid rent and three months of future rent payments for eligible tenants. To be eligible, you must:
- Live in Chicago
- Have suffered a hardship due to COVID-19, such as job loss, reduced hours or illness within the household
- Be at risk of housing instability
- Have earned less than the maximum household income listed below during 2020 or at the time of application

How The Program Works
CHAs Housing Choice Voucher Program allows low-income families to rent quality housing in the private market via federal funds provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development . Through the HCV Program, CHA pays a portion of eligible families rent each month directly to the property owner. Families can use their vouchers to rent a house or apartment in the private market throughout the city of Chicago. Because there are more families who need rental assistance than there are funds available, CHA uses a waiting list to administer the program to eligible families. Names are selected for the waiting list randomly using a lottery process. Once selected from the waitlist the following steps summarize the process to become a HCV participant family:

CHICAGO Chicagoans whove lost income due to COVID-19 will be eligible to receive some rental assistance thanks to two initiatives approved by the City Council on Wednesday.
The council approved Mayor Lori Lightfoots plan to create a $20 million rental assistance fund, as well as another effort to give an extra seven-day cooling off period for tenants facing eviction to negotiate a deal with their landlord.
More expansive eviction protection measures that were championed by the councils progressive aldermen including one that would have given renters a year to pay back missed rent have been relegated to a committee likened to legislative purgatory at the last two council meetings.
Those who sought the rental assistance in April will not have to re-apply, officials said. A new online portal is in the works for new applicants.

Who Is Most At Risk For Losing Their Home Due To The Pandemic
The Illinois Department of Human Services estimates that there are approximately 414,000 vulnerable households that are experiencing housing insecurity in Illinois. An estimated 60,000 of these households are vulnerable to eviction in 2021. This is triple the number of evictions in Illinois in 2019, demonstrating the potential for a significant increase in COVID-19 related evictions. Housing insecurity caused by the pandemic affects a disproportionate number of low-income renters, disabled renters, veterans, and renters of color.

Lake County Family Self-sufficiency Program – Low to moderate income families and also single parents can get help finding a job in Chicago from this agency. Illinois Rental Payment Program
UPDATE: The Illinois Housing Development Authority has finished reviewing all 70,000 completed Illinois Rental Payment Program applications from the landlord-initiated phase that was open from May 17 June 13, 2021. IHDA continues to review applications as quickly as able and is prioritizing requests from tenants who are unemployed and those with extremely low household incomes.
IHDA has identified 35,000 applications with incomplete or missing documentation. As a result, IHDA has begun emailing landlords and tenants detailing what is missing and a timeframe/process to submit the documentation to complete their application for processing. Please be sure to continue checking the email address used to submit your application to ensure you have the ability to receive assistance.
