Chicago Will Have 6 Mass Vaccination Sites By Next Week As Mayor Lightfoot Urges Feds To Ramp Up Distribution
CHICAGO — As the city continues to ramp up efforts to protect healthcare workers, several more mass vaccination sites are opening up at City Colleges campuses, but Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the federal government needs to speed up its delivery of doses to Chicago.
The city’s first mass vaccination site opened last month at Malcolm X College. This week, the city opened two more mass vaccination locations, also known as Points of Dispensing , at Arturo Velasquez Institute and Richard J. Daley College earlier this week. A POD at Olive-Harvey College will open on Friday, and two more will open at Kennedy-King College and Harry S. Truman College next week.
The sites are being set up for outpatient healthcare workers who aren’t employed at hospitals where they can get the vaccine directly through their jobs — such as dental workers, school nurses, and community-based clinic healthcare staff. The sites are open by appointment only, and healthcare workers must first make sure their employer is registered with the city.
So far, the city has administered approximately 74,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccines, with approximately 16,000 people having received two doses.
There are approximately 400,000 healthcare workers in Chicago who are eligible to be inoculated during the first phase of the vaccine distribution plan, and Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the federal government has not lived up to its promises on delivering doses across the country.

With children ages 6 months through 4 years now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, the Chicago Department of Public Health will host several family vaccination clinics at City Colleges of Chicago.
These events will offer Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to children 6 months through 4 years old, as well as Pfizer vaccines and booster doses to all Chicagoans. Booster doses can be received at least five months following your initial series of Pfizer or Moderna, and at least two months after an initial dose of Johnson & Johnson.

Extra staff has been brought in to accommodate the demand at Children’s Healthcare Associates.
CHICAGO — With a quick prick and a loud cry, 16-month-old Paisley Cappelli received her dose of the COVID vaccine.
“Since she hasn’t had it, we want to make sure we got her vaccinated as soon as possible to ensure she doesn’t get it,” said Colleen Cappelli, Paisley’s parent.
The wait is finally over for millions of parents with kids 6 months through 5 years old. As soon as the CDC approved the vaccine on Saturday for the youngest population, Meredith Brenner was on-line looking for appointments for her kids.
“Especially since mask mandates have gone out the window, we haven’t really felt safe taking them indoors,” Brenner said.
Brenner booked an appointment Monday for her 15-month-old daughter, Aviva, at Lurie Children’s Hospital, where hundreds of appointments are already taken. Lurie is only offering the two-dose Moderna vaccine.

Health Departments And Health Care Providers

Currently, much of the Chicago area remains under Phase 1B guidelines, which opens up vaccinations to people age 65 years and older as well as “frontline essential workers,” including first responders, education workers like teachers and support staff, childcare workers, grocery store employees, postal service workers and more. That’s in addition to the health care workers and long-term care facility staff and residents who were eligible in Phase 1A of the state’s rollout.
Late last month, Illinois entered what it called Phase 1B Plus, opening up doses to those with certain high-risk medical conditions and comorbidities. Chicago and several surrounding suburbs, however, opted not to increase eligibility along with the state, citing low supply.

“We are trying to add more staff to increase our number of appointment slots. We just released them early this morning and they are already full,” said Lurie Children’s Hospital Clinical Services Vice President Jenny Elhadary.
Extra staff has been brought in to accommodate the demand at Children’s Healthcare Associates. The Lincoln Park Pediatrician Practice received its first shipments of the three-dose Pfizer vaccine. Staff are booking appointments beginning Wednesday.
“The first roll-out for the first two weeks, we are just doing patients in our practice. Then, I expect to get more vaccine from the city so we can roll out to anybody who can’t get to their regular pediatrician,” said Children’s Healthcare Associates Administrator Joyce McDevitt.
Children’s Healthcare Associate will receive Moderna next week. Doctors said dosing intervals are the only difference between the two vaccines. Despite the initial demand, pediatricians are expecting some hesitancy. Brenner hopes to convince other parents to follow Aviva’s lead.
“I’m more concerned about her catching COVID than I am having her vaccinated,” Brenner said.
And for parents who can’t get appointments at a hospital or pediatricians office, the city of Chicago will offer the vaccine at neighborhood centers and city college sites throughout the summer.
A small pharmacy and clinic in Bloomingdale has been getting a lot of attention on social media.

Many parents said they drove there Monday after finding the location on parent Facebook groups or on Twitter. They even extended their hours. On Tuesday, parents continued to show up.
“It’ll be a big relief. It’ll be a big relief once the first jab gets in,” parent Brian Kurth said.
Little 3-year-old Magdalena is getting her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday.
Kurth said as soon as the CDC gave the green light for children under 5 to get the vaccine, she was getting her shot.
“To keep her safe from long-term effects and short-term affects and just overall health, the least we could do,” he said.
Other hospital groups like Advocate Children’s Hospital said they’ll also begin giving shots Tuesday at all of their pediatric clinics.
The Chicago Department of Public Health recommends families first reach out to their pediatrician or family medical provider to see if appointments are available.
But the city is also planning vaccination clinics with three Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois Blue Door Neighborhood Center sites in the coming weeks, and the at-home vaccinations program will start vaccinating younger kids this Saturday.

But the site opened Tuesday is for health care workers who are “less likely to be connected to a larger clinic that will be more likely to get direct vaccine,” Arwady said, stressing again that vaccinations at city sites are by appointment only.
“I’m sorry, you can’t show up and try to get in line to get a vaccine,” Arwady said. “At this point, while the vaccine is still limited in Chicago, we’re in phase 1A, meaning that vaccine is only available at this point for health care workers and then for long-term care facility residents.”
The city’s pods are not for those who work at facilities like hospitals that are administering vaccinations themselves, Arwady said, but rather for “practices that are smaller or are not going to be traditional vaccinating partners moving forward.”
Workers that meet that criteria – Arwady listed examples including a dental practice, an outpatient practice, a school nurse, a mortician’s office or any other kind of health care worker in Chicago – will first need to make sure their practice is registered with the city.
The city’s website has a survey for health care providers to detail the practice, staff and more information before city officials begin the process of either getting doses of the vaccine directly to the practice or by setting up appointments for employees at city sites or potentially locations run by pharmacy partners or hospitals.

Cook County Health and Cook County Department of Public Health are pleased to offer COVID-19 vaccinations to those living or working in Cook County. The distribution of the COVID-19 vaccination will be done in a phased approach as vaccine supply is available and using guidance from local, state and national public health authorities.

Mayor: Chicago Opening 6 Mass Covid
CHICAGO The city of Chicago is opening six mass COVID-19 vaccination sites thatll be able to deliver roughly 25,000 weekly shots once operational, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Thursday.
Lightfoot visited one of two new sites that opened Thursday but said Chicago needs many more first doses to protect all Chicagoans quickly. The last three sites are expected to open in the next week. Most are at City Colleges of Chicago campuses.
We are frustrated by the federal governments response to COVID-19 overall, but particularly the vaccine rollout which is not delivering on its promises of the quantities that weve seen, Lightfoot said after touring a Richard J. Daley College site.
She said Chicago has been receiving fewer doses each week. From about 38,000 first doses two weeks ago to about 32,000 last week. She said at the current rate itll take 1.5 years to vaccinate all Chicagoans.
