I have a free hotel night coming up and can use it at the Marriott Courtyard River North or the Fairfield Inn downtown. We will be traveling with kids. I notice that the Fairfield has slightly cheaper parking and includes breakfast, but reviews on TripAdvisor seem to be that it is also a pretty “cheap” hotel. Location wise they’re pretty well a draw. I’ve stayed at Courtyards globally and they’re pretty consistently ok…no barometer for the Fairfield. Which one would you recommend for a young family?
The Courtyard is the River North location.
The Fairfield is Marriott’s lowest-priced brand, and I think the difference from a Courtyard is noticeable. The Chicago Fairfield is well located, but the building is older though recently refurbished. Rooms are bigger at the Courtyard, it has an indoor pool, and it is very close to the subway. That would push me in the direction of the Courtyard.

If you opt for Courtyard, you could affordably make up for the breakfast with a trip to a local pastry shop or grocery store.
Depending on the appetites of your children, I would lean toward Fairfield. It is just kind of nice to have one parent accompany the children to eat then the shower and bath area frees up for the other parent while everyone is dining. You don’t all need to leave together and find a restaurant.
