As the former capital of the Hawkeye State, Iowa City has a lot of historical sites and museums. The University of Iowa Museum of Natural History is a fun and informative place to visit, and there are many options for shopping and dining. Sleepy Hollow RV Park & Campground offers a peaceful time away from the road, and there are plenty of amenities for your family. You can also find several dump stations nearby if you need to use one.
Davenport is a fairly large city in Iowa that lies on the state border with Illinois. It is next to the Mississippi River and has parks, museums, markets and much more to see and do. A fun place to visit while in the city is the Chocolate Manor, a unique store dedicated to chocolate. The Wildcat Den State Park has an interesting campground in the area, and you can definitely stretch your legs here while hiking along “Fat Man’s Squeeze” and “Devil’s Punch Bowl.” There is also a 19th-century grist mill in the park. Route Option #: Southern Route On I
Distance: 2183 milesDrive time: 32 hoursHighlights: Des Moines, Omaha, Salt Lake City, Craters of the Moon National Monument, Boise
This route seems less popular than the other because its a bit longer. It adds a couple hours and 140 miles to the journey.
This route includes long, desolate stretches of Iowa, Nebraska, and Wyoming. But it does take you through Des Moines, Omaha, Cheyenne, Salt Lake City, and Craters of the Moon National Monument, so folks who havent visited those places may be interested in going that route.
The trendy 9th & 9th neighborhood in Salt Lake City, Utah.
I suggest taking the small detour up to the Idaho Potato Museum in Blackfoot, and Craters of the Moon National Monument.
This road trip then passes through small towns in eastern Oregon and southern Washington before making its way to Seattle. Be sure to stop at the kooky Teapot Gas Station in Zillah!
This route has a lot of highway driving on busy I-80. To experience some of the back roads instead, follow U.S. Route 20 through Nebraska and Wyoming.
Architectural And Historic Sites Between Des Moines And Chicago
The area between these two cities hosts some fascinating sites. Dutch immigrants built windmills here in the style of their home country. People who want to see one should stop in Fulton, Illinois before crossing the Mississippi River. Nearby there’s also a Lincoln Highway information center.
Famed architect Frank Loyd Wright designed homes in the area like the Fabyan Villa in Geneva. Now it’s a museum. On the same land, visitors can enjoy walking through the peaceful Fabyan Japanese Garden.
The region has also played an important role in presidential history with several presidential libraries and homes to visit. Workers are building Barak Obama’s presidential center and library in Chicago. Ronald Regan’s boyhood home is now a museum in Dixon, Illinois, right on the Lincoln Highway. Travelers who want to see the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library will have to leave the Lincoln Highway after Clarence and head south on Iowa 38 to I-80 to West Branch.
Herbert Hoover is among Americas greatest doodling presidents. Designers discovered some of his doodles and used them in fabric patterns. In the 1930s several pieces of childrens clothing were created from these patterns.

While Dubuque is not directly on your path from Des Moines to Chicago via I-80, it isn’t too much out of your way and will certainly offer plenty to do for a couple days. Des Moines to Dubuque is about 3 hours and the same Dubuque to O’Hare. Here are a couple websites to look over with information about Dubuque and the tri-state area.
thanks will have a look at them
Galena, Illinois is very close to Dubuque and is a scenic and interesting place to visit: There are quite a few interesting shops and restaurants.
Also, if you travel east along I-80 from Des Moines, you may want to stop and visit the Amana Colonies:
Enjoy your trip!
Dubuque is an excellent choice, the most interesting city in Iowa. The Fenelon Place Elevator is unique. I agree with Lem5’s recommendation of the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium. For further Mississippi River experience, you will want to take an excursion on the river and view the lock and dam. Bald eagles are less abundant in summer months. The locals may know where you can spot them.
