How To Get To The Chicago Marathon Expo
McCormick place is a bit of a hike from downtown. The Chicago Marathon organizers used to offer a shuttle from downtown to the Expo, but they stopped offering that service in 2019. But dont worry, there are plenty of easy ways to get to McCormick Place from downtown.

Chicago Marathon Adds Nonbinary Division In Quiet Manner Some Runners Find Hurtful
I fell in love with running while playing tag in the park during church picnics in Abu Dhabi, where I grew up. I tried track for a brief stint in middle school, but it didnt stick.
Things only got serious when I started running solo in high school. I was a high-strung cheerleader staring down SAT practice tests and college application essays, so I turned to running after school to cope with the stress.
What began as an exercise routine to sweat out my anxiety became an obsession with constantly moving goalposts. A quick 2-mile jog before I started on the days homework turned into a daily running streak, logging anywhere from 3 to 7 miles a day.
Endurance sports like long-distance running appeal to me because I love seeing what I am capable of when I push myself. Testing my mental and physical limits is also one of the reasons why I climb its a celebration of what my body can do.
Over time, the more I ran, the harder I was on myself. In my junior year of high school, I developed an eating disorder which when coupled with my near-compulsive exercise habit took a mental, emotional and physical toll on me. Only in the last three years have I learned, with medical and community support, how to manage my eating disorder, push myself as an athlete and practice self-compassion all at the same time.
I signed up for the Chicago Marathon lottery when I felt like I had finally found that balance.

Where To Stay For The Chicago Marathon
The race starts and ends downtown, but you dont have to stay downtown. In fact, it might even be faster to get to the race from a hotel a bit outside of downtown. The most important thing to consider when choosing a hotel for the Chicago Marathon is access to a CTA train. You want to stay close to a train that connects to the Loop probably the Red or Blue Line.
Here are a few neighborhoods and hotels I would recommend for the Chicago Marathon.
Personally, Id recommend the Lowes in Streeterville or SpringHill Suites Chinatown.
I used to live right next door to the Loews and have walked to Grant Park from there plenty of times. Its a nice walk, but it takes longer than you think to get to the starting line. Plan for about 30 minutes.
I ended up at the SpringHill Suites Chinatown for the 2022 marathon. I had booked a different downtown Marriott, but they were oversold and had to send me to Chinatown. At the time I was livid, but it was really a blessing in disguise. I got from my room to the race entrance in 20 minutes flat .

A taxi from Chicago O’Hare to downtown will cost around $40 plus tip, and usually takes 30 to 40 minutes traffic permitting.
CTA bus routes travel throughout the city, with stops every few blocks. Several lines offer Night Owl service, running until 2 a.m. or later.
Chicago has the second largest public transportation system CTA which operates Chicagos eight L train lines. They connect the city via above-ground, street-level, and subway trains, and serve 145 rail stations all over town. Two lines operate 24/7: the Blue Line, which connects Chicago OHare International Airport and downtown, and the Red Line, with service between the North and South Sides via downtown.

Plan For Race Morning
A few things you need to know specifically around the Chicago Marathon Starting area.
Chicago does NOT allow hydration packs. They DO allow running belts.
They have also stated they may ask you to pour out liquids. At our entrance gate they made everyone empty EVERYTHING, except a sealed clear bottle of water.
So if you are using liquid nutrition like I was, plan to find a water zone inside the start area and mix your nutrition.
Youll go through security to get to where the corrals are. The lines move very quickly, but this is where they are checking for hydration or bringing in bags other than those allowed to be checked.
The guide will tell you which gate it recommends that you go to, but you can enter through any of them.
Biggest mistake I saw thousands make was to get in line on the outside area of the porta potties.
Walk along in front of the porta potties near your corral and youll find many lines, which are much shorter. While none of the ones I visited ran of out of Toilet Paper, Im a big fan of bringing a few tissues with you to the start line.
They tell you to get there two hours early. I found this to be way too much time, especially as I found the shorter bathroom lines. Id say 90 minutes is plenty.
If you do get there early, sit down. Dont waste tons of energy standing around.

How Many Runners Cut The Course At This Point
7 Runners that obviously cut the course at Michigan Avenue were disqualified. These runners finished between 2:39:56 and 5:04:58. They logged splits between 3:32 per mile to 5:53 per mile.
Unfortunately this is only the tip of the iceberg. Ive identified an additional 40 runners that, in my opinion, very clearly cut this section of the course.
In total, at least 47 runners cut this portion of the course. In all likelihood, the # is higher. I only included those runners where I felt there was no doubt.
There are a couple runners that I felt were worth additional analysis
What To Expect During The Race
During the Chicago Marathon, you will experience a lot of things. For example, you will see people cheering for you along the route.
They will try to encourage you to keep going and reach your goal.
Additionally, there will be medical personnel on-site who will help you if you feel sick or injured.
Also, there will be volunteers who will give you water and other drinks.
Finally, you may come across police officers who will check whether youre allowed to cross certain roads.
The most important thing to remember is that you should never drink alcohol while participating in this event.
This is because it could cause serious health problems. Also, make sure that you wear comfortable clothing when running.
Your body needs to stay warm at all times. Therefore, you should wear clothes that allow sweat to evaporate easily.
You should also bring plenty of food and water with you. In case you dont like eating during the race, you will be provided with nutrition bars.
These are small snacks that contain carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals.
You can buy these snacks at various locations along the route. Also, you can purchase water bottles at the aid stations.
In addition to these items, you should carry a map of the city where the race takes place.
This way, youll know how far you still have to go. You can use it to measure your progress and compare it to your previous performance.
How Much Is The Entry Fee
Applicants will be required to include a credit card number on applications, with the fee being processed upon acceptance. U.S. residents, including residents of American territories, must pay an entry fee of $230. The entry fee for non-U.S. residents is $240.
When filling out the application, Chicago Marathon officials ask that card with an expiration date later than December 2022 is used.
Charity Guaranteed Entry Through Drawing Period
Applications for guaranteed charity entries will be available through the drawing period, which ends November 17, 2022. To register with a guaranteed entry during the drawing period, first register with GLASA, then you will be provided with a unique URL to secure a spot in the Chicago Marathon. You must be 16+ years old to participate in the BOA Chicago Marathon.
If you are deferring your charity spot from a previous BOA Chicago Marathon, you will be able to register for the 2023 Chicago Marathon through November 17, 2022.
The minimum fundraising commitment for the guaranteed entry during the drawing period is $1,250 . We reimburse your entry fee .

Check Your Corral As Soon As Its Assigned And Submit A Change Request If Needed
On my 2022 Chicago Marathon registration, I submitted an estimated finish time of 4:45. According to the 2022 qualifying standards, that would have put me in Corral K. However, when my corral was assigned, I was put in M. Starting in a later corral isnt the worst thing, but I wanted to start as soon as possible.
I followed the steps provided in the email to request a corral change. My request was approved and I was moved to K. Corrals arent guaranteed and they can fill up, but its worth a shot. If you feel like your corral is wrong or your estimated finish time changed, be sure to submit a change request during the window.
Stop By The Nike Store On Michigan Ave
The Nike store on Michigan Ave sells the full line of Chicago Marathon apparel, including everything thats available at the Expo . More importantly, the Nike Store on Michigan Ave is the only place where you can find finisher gear. Its usually only available on Saturday and Sunday of race weekend, but in 2022 it was released early on Friday.
The lines are usually longer at the Nike store than at the Expo, but its got a fun energy.
Also keep in mind that the Nike store accepts returns on Chicago Marathon apparel. If you buy too much at the Expo or if you find a finisher shirt you like better, you can return unwanted items at the store.
