Her two roommates didn’t want to chance it either. They said quick goodbyes to families in Kaufman and Grapevine to get to Mansfield and catch a ride.
“I feel that everyone understands the problem at hand and is being realistic. So my parents were like, ‘You need to hop in that car ASAP’,” said Camille Doster, an occupational therapist who was spending the holidays with family in Kaufman. “I freaked out thinking I wasn’t going to be able to get back. So, I just got my backpack and drove to Mansfield. So, I’ll worry about the rest of my belongings later.”
It’s a similar story for Jami Hopkins. She was at her parents’ house in Grapevine when Huante, her roommate, let her know another plan to get back to jobs near Denver was in the works.
“Me and my parents were looking at the flights and everything was canceled from Dallas to Denver. Every single flight was canceled that we saw,” said Hopkins, who is a nurse. “Heather’s option to jump in the car with her was the safest option. So, here we are with my friends vs people I don’t know.”
The four friends left Mansfield about mid-morning on Tuesday. They were loaded with snacks from Huante’s mom and ready for the adventure.
“We knew we could control this. We could not control the sky. So, that made it an easy decision,” Huante said.
After a 12-hour drive, the four friends are back in Denver – and back on the job.

Southwest Airlines Admits Certain Financial Impact From Holiday Travel Chaos
After days of paralyzing winter weather across the US on Christmas weekend, thousands of Southwest Airlines flights have been canceled stranding holiday travelers across the country.
Over 3,600 flights in and out of the US were canceled on Monday, with an additional 6,120 flights delayed, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.
Southwest Airlines alone canceled over two thirds of its scheduled flights roughly 2,700 as of 5 p.m. Monday. No other American airline company canceled as significant a number of their flights.
Southwest canceled around 300 flights in the span of just a half hour at one point Monday afternoon.
With consecutive days of extreme winter weather across our network behind us, continuing challenges are impacting our Customers and Employees in a significant way that is unacceptable, Southwest said in a statement Monday.
And our heartfelt apologies for this are just beginning.
The airline, which is the largest carrier in 23 of the top 25 travel markets in the US, said it was working to alleviate the wide-scale disruption by moving around planes and crew members where they are most needed.
CNN reported that the airports that have been most affected by the cancellations are Denver, Las Vegas, Chicago Midway, Baltimore/Washington and Dallas Love Field where Southwest is based.
Scott Keyes, the founder of Scotts Cheap Flights, told the news outlet it could take up to a week before flights return to normal.

Southwest Airlines Flight Cancellations Continue To Snowball
DALLAS Travelers who counted on Southwest Airlines to get them home suffered another wave of canceled flights Wednesday, and pressure grew on the federal government to help customers get reimbursed for unexpected expenses they incurred because of the airlines meltdown.
Exhausted Southwest travelers tried finding seats on other airlines or renting cars to get to their destination, but many remained stranded. The airlines CEO said it could be next week before the flight schedule returns to normal.
Adontis Barber, a 34-year-old jazz pianist from Kansas City, Missouri, had camped out in the citys airport since his Southwest flight was canceled Saturday, hoping to reach a New Year’s gig in Washington, D.C.
He left his airport vigil Wednesday. I give up, he said. Im starting to feel homeless.
Other airlines recovered from ferocious winter storms that hit large swaths of the country over the weekend, but not Southwest, which scrubbed 2,500 flights Wednesday and 2,300 more on Thursday.
The Dallas airline was undone by a combination of factors including an antiquated crew-scheduling system and a network design that allows cancellations in one region to cascade throughout the country rapidly. Those weaknesses are not new they helped cause a similar failure by Southwest in October 2021.
In a video that Southwest posted late Tuesday, CEO Robert Jordan said Southwest would operate a reduced schedule for several days but hoped to be back on track before next week.

A Lufthansa Flight From La To Germany Made An ‘unscheduled Landing’ In Chicago After Passenger’s Laptop Caught Fire
- A Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt landed in Chicago due to a small fire onboard on Monday night.
- The fire was caused by an overheating laptop and was put out before the plane landed.
- No passengers were injured but some flight attendants were treated for smoke inhalation.
A Lufthansa flight was forced to make an “unscheduled landing” at Chicago O’Hare International Airport after a passenger’s laptop caught fire on Monday night, the airline confirmed to Insider.
The flight from Los Angeles to Frankfurt, Germany made an emergency landing at O’Hare Airport as a “precautionary measure,” due to a small fire in the cabin. The fire was caused by a passenger’s overheating laptop, Lufthansa said.
The fire was put out in-flight before the plane landed. None of the passengers onboard were injured, but two flight attendants were “treated onsite” for smoke inhalation.
Staff on ground are helping passengers and they will be rebooked to their final destinations, Lufthansa said.
“Safety on board was not compromised at any time,” it added.
“Lufthansa regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers. The safety of passengers and crews has top priority at all times.”

Whats Wrong From A Pilots Point Of View
Speaking to CNN on Tuesday, the vice president of the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, Capt. Mike Santoro, said the problems facing Southwest were the worst disruptions hed experienced in 16 years at the airline.
He described last weeks storm as a catalyst that helped trigger major technical issues.
What went wrong is that our IT infrastructure for scheduling software is vastly outdated, he said. It cant handle the number of pilots, flight attendants that we have in the system, with our complex route network.
We dont have the normal hub the other major airlines do. We fly a point-to-point network, which can put our crews in the wrong places, without airplanes.
He added: It is frustrating for the pilots, the flight attendants and especially our passengers. We are tired of apologizing for Southwest, the pilots in the airline, our hearts go out to all of the passengers, they really do.

Long Lines And Bag Buildups At Airports
At the Southwest ticket counter at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Tuesday morning, long lines were already building up as travelers waited to try to rebook flights or make connections.
And at Chicagos Midway International, huge buildups of unclaimed bags piled up as passengers struggled to reclaim their luggage. There were similar scenes at other airports including Harry Reid in Las Vegas and William P. Hobby Airport in Houston.
Passenger Trisha Jones told CNN at the airport in Atlanta that she and her partner had been traveling for five days, trying to get home to Wichita, Kansas, after disembarking from a cruise at Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
After her flight out was canceled, she stayed with relatives then rerouted to Atlanta to pick up a connecting flight.
We were fortunate, because we were in Fort Lauderdale my family lives in the Tampa bay area so we were able to rent a car to go see my family for Christmas, Jones said. Weve seen a lot of families who are sleeping on the floor, and it just breaks my heart.

So What Can Southwest Passengers Do
Southwest has warned that this weeks cancellations and delays are expected to continue for several more days.
So where does that leave customers who are in a real jam? What should they do?
First things first, travelers who are still stuck waiting on Southwest and need to get somewhere should try to book a flight with another airline as soon as possible right now, really, said Kyle Potter, executive editor at the travel advice website Thrifty Traveler, in an email to CNN Travel late Tuesday afternoon.
Every airline in the country is jam-packed right now, so your odds of even finding a seat let alone at an even halfway decent price get smaller by the hour, Potter said.
Travelers in the thick of this should be sure to save all their receipts: other flights, a rental car, nights at the hotel, meals, anything, Potter said.
If youve been left in the lurch and your efforts to reach a customer service agent are going nowhere, the founder of Scotts Cheap Flights suggests trying an international number.
The main hotline for US airlines will be clogged with other passengers getting rebooked. To get through to an agent quickly, call any one of the airlines dozens of international offices, Scott Keyes said.
Agents can handle your reservation just like US-based ones can, but theres virtually no wait to get through.
that Southwest has previously posted.
