First Scotland To Us Flights To Resume In 2022

The first flights from Scotland to the United States are set to resume in early 2022.

United Airlines confirmed they would first resume a daily non-stop service from Edinburgh Airport to New York/Newark from 5 March.

Further services to Chicago and Washington DC will start from 7 May.

Edinburgh Airport’s chief executive Gordon Dewar said the move would allow loved ones to reunite and would “reopen strong tourism destinations”.

All transatlantic flights from Scotland were halted shortly after Covid-19 began spreading in the UK.

Last year United Airlines had planned to reinstate flights between Edinburgh and New York in July but this was postponed.

Meanwhile, Air Canada and WestJet flights will resume next year linking Edinburgh with Toronto. Virgin Atlantic also starts its Barbados route next week.

Edinburgh Airport continued to have links during the pandemic with Doha in Qatar and Istanbul via Turkish Airlines. Emirates also restarted flights from Dubai to Glasgow Airport.

International air travel resumed in May this year, largely uninterrupted.

However temporary travel restrictions have recently been introduced in Scotland for those arriving from certain Southern African countries as part of efforts to stem the spread of the new Omicron variant.

The Us And Scotland Connected Once Again

United Airlines will be the first airline to restart nonstop flights to Scotland since ties were cut due to the effects of the pandemic.

Its incredibly exciting to be resuming our transatlantic services with United to allow direct travel between Scotland and the USA for the first time in two years, said Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport. It will allow families to reunite, friends to reconnect, and re-open the strong tourism destinations on both sides of the Atlantic.

Daily flights to Edinburgh from Newark will start on March 4, 2022, and from Chicago and Washington, D.C. on March 6, 2022.

The schedule for each of the routes is as follows:

  • Depart Newark 8:20 p.m. Arrive Edinburgh 8:05 a.m.
  • Depart Edinburgh 9:40 a.m Arrive Newark 12:20 p.m.
  • Depart Chicago 6:15 p.m. Arrive Edinburgh 7:50
  • Depart Edinburgh 11:30 a.m. Arrive Chicago 1:55 p.m.
  • Depart Washington, D.C. 10:25 p.m. Arrive Edinburgh 10:40 a.m.
  • Depart Edinburgh 12:30 p.m. Washington, D.C. 3:10 p.m.

Each of the routes will be operated by one of Uniteds Boeing 757 aircraft. These narrow-body aircraft are smaller than what you might expect on transatlantic flights.

Down the back, there are 108 regular economy seats and 45 economy plus seats in a 3-3 layout.

For a significantly more comfortable hop across the pond, passengers can choose from 16 fully-flat, Polaris business class seats.
