Frank Lloyd Wright House Chicago

Frank L Smith Bank Building Dwight

A305/05: Frank Lloyd Wright: The Robie House

Wright believed banks should express their own character rather than resemble temples of worship. So he designed this bank building with a simple, dignified aesthetic. Remodelling through the years has restored much of that original dignity, and the building still operates as a bank more than 110 years after it was builtthe only of Wrights bank designs to do so.

How to Visit: Tours are not offered, but you can view the interior of the bank during business hours.

Special Event: Wright Plus Housewalk

Most of Wrights designs around Oak Park are private residences that arent normally open to the public. However, each year in May, the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust offers the Wright Plus Housewalk, a guided tour of 10 homes and buildings, including rare glimpses inside several private homes. The next Housewalk is May 18, 2019.

The Ultimate Prairie House

Inside if you can find the front door is a pair of rectangles containing the principal living spaces of the house support is provided by reinforced concrete girders. A massive fireplace divides the living and dining rooms and connects all three floors, as does a central stairway. Vertical support is tucked neatly into the spaces between the walls and windows and nearly disappears, again allowing for the expansive horizontal feeling to be accentuated.

Outside the home, a generous use of Bedford limestone for the lintels, sills, copings and even the giant planters provide an exclamation point on the horizontal lines of the home. Abstract geometric forms in Wrights favorite 30- and 60-degree angles are prominently displayed in the 174 art-glass window and door panels.

On July 7, 2019, UNESCO announced the addition of the Robie House along with seven other Frank Lloyd Wright designed buildings to the United Nations’ list of the world’s most significant cultural and natural sites. View the complete list.

The studio was added to the house in 1898 with a separate entrance on Chicago Avenue . It definitely has a different vibe from the home, more professional and showcased his talents.

Two of the most notable areas in the studio are the reception hall and the drafting room. The reception hall was where clients would wait and where Wright would go over blueprints with contractors. The woodwork and art-glass covered recessed lighting is beautiful and an amazing sight to behold.

We loved seeing this building! Its one thing to see his work in the form of a residence, but definitely another to see it in a public building. His use of space gives a different vibe delineating between the more serious worship versus the potentially fun and multi-purpose community areas. Of course, like the other Wright works, we enjoyed seeing the details he put into his designs and how they were similar and different between the buildings.

Inside A Restored Frank Lloyd Wright Masterpiece

When it was completed in 1910, Frank Lloyd Wrights Robie House would certainly have marked a departure from the more staid or traditional forms throughout Chicago at that time, says the houses operations manager, Joe Barrett. While some of Wrights contemporaries might have recognized his architecture as progressive and even found it inspiring, today his work is appreciated as a cornerstone of modern American building design.

During an $11-million restoration of the property concluded in March 2019, the home remained mostly open to the publicthe property hosts between 35,000 and 44,000 visitors annuallyand Robie House has since been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Original sketches of the home, plus a diary kept by one of its previous owners, were invaluable in replicating some key features and preserving crucial aspects.

When we first started the restoration, water was actively entering the building, the soffits had icicles during the winter, and bricks were spalling, says Karen Sweeney, preservation architect and facility director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust. Our first work was structural stabilization, masonry repointing, and then installing a new reproduction roofkeeping the building watertight. Only when this and the electrical, mechanical, and life safety were updated did we start work on the interior finishes.

Tracing Frank Lloyd Wright In Oak Park Illinois

As an architecture buff, I had been drawn to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright for years before finally seeing his innovative Frederick C. Robie House on the South Side of Chicago last year.

The art-glass windows throughout the structure bring in an incredible amount of natural light. On the second floor, the living space is a large open room, complementing the structural transparency that Wright worked to incorporate in his designs.

The experience only heightened my admiration for him. I wanted to see more of his buildings, but I was out of time. I had to return to New York the next day.

This year, I made the time. I recently found myself back in Chicago riding an elevated train toward Oak Park, a leafy, diverse village adjacent to the citys western edge with a population of 52,000.

As the glamour of North Michigan Avenue and the bustle of the downtown Loop receded with each passing stop, I was happy to make my way to suburbia. That is because Oak Park isnt your typical suburb. It boasts 25 buildings that were designed or remodeled by Wright, the largest collection in the world.

I opted for the Wright Around Oak Park Tour , an extensive three-hour guided walking tour offered daily from April through October. The tours are limited to about 10 people and offer unrestricted photography privileges, and the opportunity to have a guide explain the intricacies behind each Wright home in the vicinity of Forest Avenue.

Fun Fact: The Robie House Was One Of Wrights Last Prairie Style Homes It Is Considered To Be The Best Example Of A Prairie School Home And Benchmark To Which All Other Buildings Of The Style Are Compared

This home was created specifically for Frederick C. Robie who commissioned Wright to build him a house on this rectangular lot. The family only lived in the home for 14 months before Robies father died and they ran into financial trouble. Since then it was passed to multiple owners until 1926 when it was sold to the Chicago Theological Seminary.

The seminary was originally interested in the house as potential for expansionary purposes since they owned a neighboring property next door. They retained the house as a dormitory and dining hall for almost 30 years until 1957 when they announced that they wished to demolish the property.

Frank Lloyd Wright Home And Studio Oak Park

Sometimes, in order to understand a genius, you have to see how he lived. This is why it was super important to us to visit Frank Lloyd Wrights home and studio!

His own home and studio was the first of his designs where he had full creative reign. Louis Sullivan lent Wright $5,000 to purchase and develop the property. The complex was home to Wright and his family through the first 20 years of his career, from 1898 to 1909, until he moved to Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin.

The Pettit Memorial Chapel is a small structure on the grounds of Belvidere Cemetery in Belvidere, Illinois. Emma Glasner Pettit, the sister of William A. Glasner, for whom Wright designed a home in Glencoe in 1905, commissioned the chapel in honor of her deceased husband, William H. Pettit. Wright used straight lines and very simple detail which was an extreme departure from the Victorian style that was popular at the turn of the century. It is the only cemetery memorial Wright ever designed.

In 1905, Wright was tasked with renovating The Rookery, which by then had begun to necessitate repairs. He retained the beauty of the Burnham & Roots design and enhancing it with his own additions. Wrights updates included slight changes to the staircase railings, white marble throughout the lobby, white paint in the atrium, his signature decorative urns at the base of the main staircase, and new light fixtures.
