Take In The Distinctive Sound Of The Chicago Blues

During the 1940s African American workers from Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana headed north to Chicago for industrial jobs and a better life. Many were musicians and who brought with them the Delta blues.

After they settled in Chicago these musicians modified their sound by switching from acoustic guitars to electric ones, they amplified their harmonicas, and added bass, drums and sometimes saxophone.

With that, the distinctive style of Chicago blues was born, a style of music that is synonymous with Chicago still today and continues to be a major influence on other genres including soul, rhythm & blues and rock.

With the blues being such an integral part of the fabric of Chicago, no trip would be complete without spending a couple of hours at one of the citys blues bars.

One of the oldest blues bars in the city is Kingston Mines. Established in 1968, its been home to the blues for over 50 years. Open seven days a week, it features two stages that dont shut down till 4:00 and 5:00 am. Hungry? Dig in to their full barbecue menu.

Across the street is another great blues club, conveniently named B.L.U.E.S.

Voted best blues club on Chicagos north side, it features a friendly, intimate atmosphere and some of the citys hottest players. Another cool thing is B.L.U.E.S. and Kingston Mines offer a dual cover charge, so if you go to one club you dont have to pay a second cover charge to get into the other one.

Youll step back into Americas Gilded Age at the refined Nickerson House, built in 1883 for the banker Samuel M. Nickerson.

Close to the Magnificent Mile, on the Near North Side, the house looks a little out of place, dwarfed by the citys bold Neoclassical monuments and glass-clad skyscrapers.

In 2003 the Chicago fund manager and philanthropist turned the Nickerson house into a museum, blending the original furnishings with luxurious Art Nouveau glazed tiles, stained glass, onyx, carvings and marble all sourced from other places.

The museum is heaven if you like decorative arts.

Youll find some lovely pieces by Louis Comfort Tiffany, like a large fire screen, a set of vibrant stemware, a blown-glass humidor and a peculiar centrepiece lamp.

The ballroom has Edward Colonna furniture you can sit in, while some other exceptional pieces include Sèvres vases, a suite of George A. Schastey neo-Empire chairs, pre-Raphaelite paintings and a rare Chickering and Sons grand piano.

Best Western River North

Another nice hotel option is the Best Western River North. This is a great hotel if you are looking for a more affordable option, but also want a nice big room. Plus it is located in a great location to be able to walk to a lot of the downtown attractions.

Our room was huge and had 2 double beds and a pullout bed. They also have a large pool that was perfect for our family and allowed the kids to burn off some energy.

Another plus was their onsite restaurant that had pizza for dinner, a bar and a great breakfast selection. It was snowing when we were there so it was nice that we didnt have to leave the hotel, but could stay right on site to get a tasty and convenient dinner and breakfast.

Our kids favorite thing about the hotel was the free ice cream sandwiches and Push-Ups that they had behind the front desk. Plus they were unlimited so you could get as many as you wanted! Learn more about the Best Western River North hotel here.
