George Washington offers its students an outstanding comprehensive education in a culturally rich environment. Students can choose from more than 100 course offerings, with 52 sections of honors and AP classes. Students also have the opportunity to tap into a network of over 50 campus clubs and student groups and a full inter-scholastic athletic program, with 22 teams in 15 sports. In addition, Washington has an active Richmond Neighborhood program, Wellness Center, Parent Teacher Student Association, and Alumni Association.

George Washington High School provides a learning environment that is safe and secure, promotes high academic and ethical standards, and prepares all students to become successful lifelong learners in a global, multicultural society. We believe that equity means not only providing equal access to school resources, but providing appropriate support so all students can take advantage of all resources. We encourage our students to explore every academic opportunity available.

Our school mission is that every George Washington High School student will be a lifelong learner who can think critically with a social conscience, and strive to reach their full potential while maintaining mental and physical health. Students will grow to be resilient, productive, and contributing members of their communities. Our school wide learning outcomes are aligned with the SFUSD Vision 20205: Graduate Profile.

Inside/outside: Artfit At George Washington High School

At George Washington High School on Chicagos Far East side, students enrolled in CAPEs after-school ArtFit program are expressing themselves through a unique combination of fine arts and martial arts. Artwork from the ArtFit program artwork will be on display at CAPEs upcoming INSIDE/OUTSIDE exhibition, which opens on January 31, 2019.

Co-taught by artists and Jesse Meredith alongside Washingtons Technology Coordinator, Andres Cordoba, the ArtFit After School Program teaches students mixed-martial arts methods as well as digital photography and video. The big idea of the project is to look at the idea of safe space as a wider community infrastructure and as an internal personal experience. Over the last 5 months students have been simultaneously learning martial arts and digital media techniques. These seemingly disparate practices have become a way for the the students and instructors to unify within their own bodies, learn self defense and create their own self guided agency in how their image is represented in the world using photography and video. In the INSIDE/OUTSIDE exhibit students present a series of photos and videos of themselves in warrior poses, specialized choreography, and the architecture they are surrounded by at George Washington High School.

Voices From School Communities: George Washington High School

George Washington High School

Voices from School Communities began with a query sent by email on June 8, in reference to the murder of George Floyd and national protests. The email read, in part: I would like to see if its possible to share voices directly from school communities, voicing perspectives from students, parents, teachers, artists, administrationwhether it be thoughts, feelings, questions, beliefs. What are you hearing from students? Parents? How are you thinking about teaching to these events? What are your perspectives or struggles or questions as educators and artists?

Many organizations are issuing statements, and while we support this, the CAPE program staff felt that it is essential to put forward the ideas and inquiries and emotions of our partners who work in our schools and who live in the surrounding neighborhoods.

This week, we are sharing words and images from George Washington High School students Erica, Jessica, Abril, Esmeralda, Giavanna, Daniela, Jovana, Kristal, Viviana, Yasmin, and Sofia. They collaborate together with their on-staff art teacher Kathryn Peterman and teaching artist Ben Murray in a CAPE/GWHS after-school program that began in 2015.
