A look into the Greater Chicago Food Depository

For Angela, the energy of the kitchen suited her. Desk jobs arent her thing. Shed worked in food service for years, mostly in fast food chains, before starting the Chicagos Community Kitchens program. She saw it as a way to get her foot in the door at a professional kitchen and earn an income that would support her family. While attending the program, she and her three children were temporarily homeless. She started as an intern at J& L and had been employed full-time there for the past six months.

I enjoyed the internship. I enjoy the work even more, she said.

Chicagos Community Kitchens has been an LP grant recipient since 2010, with the firm having doubled its grant amount in 2018. Seeing how completing the program impacts students lives and the hard work that goes into reaching graduation, LP wanted a way to individually recognize the students efforts. In 2018, it began offering a completion award to any student who graduates the program as a way to recognize their dedication and achievement.

Jill Myczek has worked part-time in J& Ls kitchen for two and a half years. She came to the culinary job training program looking for skills to help her find employment in a new line of work after having spent more than 30 years in the medical field. She has always loved cooking, so Chicagos Community Kitchens provided her a way to learn a new, marketable skill while doing something she enjoys.

About: The Food Depository is a member of Feeding America, the national network of food banks. The Greater Chicago Food Depository is Chicagos food bank. We provide food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community.

The Food Depository is part of a united community effort working to bring food, dignity and hope to our Cook County neighbors. We act as the hub for a network of more than 700 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other programs. These programs provide food where its most needed.

Volunteers needed: Help Our COVID-19 Response. We have an urgent need for volunteers aged 18-60 to pack food for our COVID-19 response. Food assistance is an essential service during the Illinois Stay at Home order. .

CHICAGO Officials from the City of Chicago and the Greater Chicago Food Depository today announced the launch of Forward Together: A Roadmap to Reduce Food Insecurity across the City of Chicago, which builds upon existing resources to increase access of nutritious food for households in need while exploring new solutions to reduce hunger and underlying poverty.

The plan was unveiled Tuesday at the Chicago Public Library Douglass Branch in North Lawndale the site of the Food Depositorys newest program collaboration with the City of Chicago. Using its proven Healthy Student Market program model, the Food Depository supplies semi-monthly distributions of fresh produce and nutritious groceries for families with children enrolled in city-supported Chicago Early Learning and Head Start funded programming in North Lawndale.

Meeting the basic needs of Chicagos youngest children is vital to ensuring that they are ready to learn and be successful in school, said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. We applaud this partnership and innovative approach to addressing food insecurity in neighborhoods across the City.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Operate forklifts and pallet jacks to off-load incoming product from dry and refrigerated docks. Re-warehouse products: stock order prep area, check loads for infestation, product code dates, and product damage and sanitation quality control.
  • Verify, count, or weigh incoming loads and compare to bill of lading documents prepare and maintain accurate and complete records for all Department transactions.
  • Work closely with Inventory Control to ensure all products received is recorded accurately assist with resolving inventory issues, as directed.
  • Direct trucks into docks and check loads for infestation, product code date expiration, product damage, and sanitation quality control.
  • Sort, clean, pack and re-pack dry, refrigerated, or frozen products on salvage or repack production lines in accordance with food safety and GCFD inventory guidelines.
  • Maintain salvage line in accordance with GCFD sanitation, quality control, and safety standards.
  • Stage, store, and re-warehouse raw, processed, and finished products using pallet jacket equipment.
  • Support the coordination and control of temporary workers and volunteers engaged in projects.
  • Receive, take, and process all agency orders in an efficient and courteous manner.

  • Advise agencies on total weight of their orders.

    Gregory Moore Peels Potatoes During His Second Day At His Internship With J& l Catering

    Gregory Moore was only two days into his internship at J& L Catering when he said hed already learned 11 new things. He spent part of his first day making a salmon platter and he also tackled some deep-fried croquettes. Gregory was working hard to keep up with the frantic pace of a professional kitchen and was pulling from everything he learned during the previous 12 weeks of training at Chicagos Community Kitchens.

    You dont want to be the weak link in the chain, he said.

    Gregory, like hundreds of other graduates whove completed training at Chicagos Community Kitchens, was hoping the two weeks he will spend at his internship site are going to make him even more marketable when he looks for a full-time position. After all, thats the goal of every graduate of the program.

    Grantee Highlight: Greater Chicago Food Depository

    For the month of February, the J.R. Albert Foundation is featuring the Greater Chicago Food Depository in Chicago, IL.

    On the second floor at Greater Chicago Food Depository in Chicago, IL is a gleaming commercial learning kitchen, home to Chicagos Community Kitchen.

    CCK is a workforce development program run by GCFD that addresses poverty through the lens of food. The program provides unemployed and underemployed adults with the skills necessary to gain meaningful, entry-level employment in the food industry. The program is designed to support individuals who have faced obstacles to stable employment, including poverty, limited education, age, and criminal background.

    Students at CCK receive hands-on training in fundamental culinary techniques and safe food handling, while also learning life and work skills.

    Since its inception in 1998, CCK has graduated more than 1,200 students from the 14-weeks program. Many have found jobs throughout Chicago and Cook County. Restaurants, catering companies, and other food service companies throughout Chicago and Cook County both work with the CCK to provide opportunities for internships as part of the program and hire graduates. This includes popular restaurants like Hot Chocolate, Urbanbelly, and Nico Osteria.

    In 2018, 47 students successfully completed the program, and on average, 83% of participants secure employment within 30 days of graduation. Julie B. was one of them.

    What I like about Chicago’s Community Kitchens is they prepare you to be able to work here and produce. And they help anyone who needs it, she said.

    The program has been beneficial to J& L Catering, too. Its provided a pipeline of qualified hires in a tight job market. Currently, there are three full-time employees and two part-time employees working at J& L who are program graduates.

    Chicagos Community Kitchens does a fantastic job of training their interns. They come not just with the desire, but punctuality, the willingness to listen, and to participate as a team. Whatever they do over there, theyre doing it right, Kelly said. Weve had nothing but positive experiences.

    Chicagos Community Kitchens is a 14-week job training program through the Greater Chicago Food Depository for unemployed and underemployed adults. Students spend the first 12 weeks of the program in the classroom and the Food Depositorys state of the art commercial kitchen learning skills that will prepare them for a job in the food service industry. During the program, students learn cooking techniques and food safety best practices while preparing meals for the Food Depository that are sent to food insecure individuals across Chicagoland.

    The last two weeks of the culinary job training program are spent at an internship site putting those skills to work in a professional kitchen environment. Internship sites vary greatly, from well-known Chicago restaurants like Hot Chocolate and J Parker to food prep and service in high school and college cafeterias. As with Gregory at J& L Catering, many of the programs students find that getting into an internship site refines their newfound skills even further.
