Habitat For Humanitys Restore Elgin Raises More Than $85 Million To Build New Houses In The 15 Years Since It Opened

ReStore Elgin had three goals when it opened its doors in 2006: raise money for Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley to build new houses, sell new and used home improvement and building materials at good prices, and recycle items so they dont end up in landfills.

What could have been a disaster when launched 15 years ago at 800 N State St. has proven to be nothing but a boon for the nonprofit group that uses volunteer labor to build or restore houses provided to families who need decent places to live, said Barbara Beckman, executive director of the local Habitat for Humanity group.

When we first opened ReStore, we had no idea how well it would do or how warmly it would be received by the community, Beckman said. We were nervous at first. Now, as we look back, we can say with absolute certainty that the decision to open a ReStore was one of the best decisions we made as an organization.

To celebrate its 15-year milestone, the store will be selling everything at a 15% discount from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 10, and plans to raffle off 15 select items.

ReStore Elgin was the second to open in northern Illinois, Beckman said. Now there are about 10 Chicago-area stores.

Nationally, it ranks 34th in sales. The $8.5 million its brought in since opening has helped fund 82 new homes for qualifying families, Beckman said.

    What We Do

At ReStore Chicago, youll find new and gently used furniture, appliances, cabinets, home accessories, building materials, and more. Proceeds from the ReStore provide funding to Habitat for Humanity Chicago in an effort to eliminate indecent housing in our community and see our neighborhoods thrive.

Think of the ReStore as a whole new category of retail therapy. It’s our way to keep home goods and appliances out of the landfill, funnel much-needed funds back into the community, and provide conscious consumers with quality items at discounted prices. If those are goals you can get on board with, we’d love to have you volunteer with us. And who knows? You might find something you cant live without.

We invite both individuals and groups to volunteer, with three basic requirements: good organizational skills, minimum age of 14, and the desire to create a positive environment that encourages customers to keep coming back for more. Opportunities may include sales, assisting customers, processing donations, repairing and refurbishing donations, merchandise placement, picking up donations, and more. Join us for a memorable, first-hand experience at our unforgettable, second-hand store.
