Wartime Decline And Resurgence
During World War II, Union Station was at its busiest, handling as many as 300 trains and 100,000 passengers daily, many of them soldiers. Illustrator Norman Rockwell captured this era with his cover painting for a December 1944 issue of The Saturday Evening Post, depicting the station jammed with Christmas travelers. After the war, the growth of highway construction and private ownership of automobiles caused a severe decline in American passenger-rail ridership, including at Union Station.
In 1969, the stations owner demolished the concourse building, making way for a modern office tower. A new and modernized, though less grand, concourse was constructed beneath the tower. In May 1971, the national railroad Amtrak was formed to take over long-distance passenger train service, while commuter trains remained privately operated. In 1980, the stations Fred Harvey restaurant experienced a large fire. The space was damaged, windows on Clinton Street were destroyed, and the space was left vacant since then.
In 1984, Amtrak bought out the shares of Chicago Union Station Company held by Burlington Northern and the Milwaukee Road, becoming sole owner of the station.

Just Down The Road: Union Station
Union Station is one of the busiest spots in the city, thanks to its role as the primary terminal for commuter trains and the only intercity rail terminal in Chicago. Not only is it functional, though, its also beautiful even if you arent riding the rails, its worth a look at the Beaux Artsstyle Great Hall, with a pink Tennessee marble floor, more than a dozen Corinthian columns, terra-cotta walls, and a truly magnificent barrel-vaulted ceiling. Daniel Burnham, the architect who designed the space, once said, Make no small plans, they have no magic to stir mens blood, and its clear he stuck to that ethos when creating this show-stopping room.
Growth In The 21st Century
Ridership increased during the first decade of the 21st century after the implementation of capital improvements in the NEC and rises in automobile fuel costs. The inauguration of the Acela Express in late 2000 generated considerable publicity and led to major ridership gains. However, through the late 1990s and very early 21st century, Amtrak could not add sufficient express freight revenue or cut sufficient other expenditures to break even. By 2002, it was clear that Amtrak could not achieve self-sufficiency, but Congress continued to authorize funding and released Amtrak from the requirement. In early 2002, replaced Warrington as president. In a departure from his predecessors promises to make Amtrak self-sufficient in the short term, Gunn argued that no form of passenger transportation in the United States is self-sufficient as the economy is currently structured. Highways, airports, and air traffic control all require large government expenditures to build and operate, coming from the and paid for by user fees, highway fuel and road taxes, and, in the case of the General Fund, from general taxation. Gunn dropped most freight express business and worked to eliminate deferred maintenance.
replaced Kummant as president and CEO in late 2008.

List Of Amtrak Stations
|Read the .|
This is a list of train stations and stops used by . This list is in alphabetical order by station or stop name, which mostly corresponds to the city in which it is located. If an page exists for the actual station or stop, a link is included. Some Thruway Motorcoach stops include train stations that are not served by Amtrak trains .
All current Amtrak train stops and Thruway Motorcoach stops have a three-letter . These codes do not necessarily correspond with the or the three-character , although many are the same. Amtrak began using station codes in 1992, so stations closed or removed from all Amtrak service prior to 1992 have no assigned station code. The station code “ENP” is used for “any stop en route, not otherwise specified”. If a station code was used by more than one train station, each station is listed. However, if a station code was used for a Thruway Motorcoach stop that has changed locations, only information for the current location is included in the notes, unless one of the locations was an actual train station.
Ridership data and station ownership is from Amtrak’s Great American Stations website. The ownership of many stations is shared, with one entity owning one or more of the following: the facility itself, the parking lot, the passenger platform, and the train tracks. In some instances, the owner of the bus station used for a Thruway Motorcoach stop is not the same as the connection service provider.
