One of 77 designated community areas in Chicago, the Hyde Park neighborhood is home to some of the citys most beautiful and iconic institutions, ranging from the Museum of Science and Industry to the world-renowned University of Chicago.

Located about seven miles south of the Loop, Hyde Park is officially bounded by 51st Street/Hyde Park Boulevard to the north, the Midway Plaisance to the south, Washington Park on the west, and Lake Michigan on the east. Some locals stretch their definition of Hyde Park to include some of the southernmost parts of Kenwood, which is, officially, a separate community area.

A popular destination for locals and tourists alike, Hyde Park played home to the 1893 Worlds Fair. Also known as the Columbian Exposition, this major turning point in American history introduced the idea of electricity not to mention the modern ferris wheel to nearly 30 million people.

Today, Hyde Park still has plenty to offer, including Frank Lloyd Wrights world famous Robie House, great access to the beaches of Lake Michigan, the DuSable Museum of African American History, and the Hyde Park Art Center, which has been an influential institution in Chicagos art scene for decades.

Whats The History Of Hyde Park

In 1853, a lawyer named Paul Cornell bought 300 acres of land along Lake Michigan between 51st and 55th Streets. He named the area after Londons Hyde Park. After the 1871 Chicago Fire, many of the Chicagos wealthy businessmen built large homes in Hyde Park.

Then in 1889, Hyde Park was annexed by the city of Chicago. From that point things moved quickly for the neighborhood. For example, Hyde Park was selected as the site of the University of Chicago. And next, it was chosen to host the worlds Columbian Exposition of 1893.

What followed was a building boom of homes, hotels, parks and businesses. Hyde Park homes built ranged in price and style from workmans cottages to stately homes for professors, business executives, writers, artists and musicians. During this time, Hyde Park became one of Chicagos most popular neighborhoods.

Then came the Great Depression of the 1930s and Hyde Park home construction came to a halt. The neighborhood suffered stagnation and decline.

The Great Northern Migration of African Americans from the south to Chicago ramped up during the 1930s and 1940s. The result in Chicagos South side was massive white flight. However, due to racially restrictive covenants, Hyde Park remained a predominantly white neighborhood during this time.

Then, 1948 the U.S. Supreme Court banned racially restrictive covenants and African Americans began moving to Hyde Park. By 1955 the neighborhood was more multiracial but still in economic decline.

    Hyde Park Community Amenities

    Hyde Park Real Estate

Home to the esteemed University of Chicago, Hyde Park is a South Side neighborhood located 6 miles south of The Loop. Along with the University of Chicago, Hyde Park houses the Oriental Institute, the Renaissance Society, the Museum of Science & Industry, the Hyde Park Art Center, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s famed Robie House. Hyde Park also organizes the annual 57th Street Art Fair, Chicago’s oldest juried art fair. 57th Street doubles as a venue for several well-known independent bookstores, like Powell’s and 57th Street Books, a further indication that Hyde Park is brimming with cultural as well as intellectual opportunities.

Although Hyde Park was initially developed in the 1850’s, it was not until the founding of the University of Chicago by John D. Rockefeller in the early 1890’s that Hyde Park really put its name on the map. Host to the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, Hyde Park captured the attention of an international community. Converted from Charles Atwood’s Palace of Fine Arts, the Museum of Science & Industry is the sole structure remaining of those built for the Exposition. However, the Museum of Science and Industry is but one example of Hyde Park’s architectural masterpieces.
