Chicago’s Insight Hospital Receiving Ambulances Again For 1st Time In Almost A Year
For the first time in nearly a year, Chicago ambulances are taking patients to Insight Hospital & Medical Center’s emergency room, according to radio station WBEZ.
Insight Hospital & Medical Center, formerly Mercy Hospital, is one of the city’s oldest hospitals. The hospital filed for bankruptcy in February 2021. However, it was saved from closing after nonprofit Insight Chicago purchased the safety-net facility from Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health for $1. Insight Chicago, which assumed control of the hospital in June 2021, agreed to keep the hospital open through at least 2029.
A Feb. 23 news release shared with Becker’s said one of the issues Insight Chicago prioritized was upgrading the emergency room from basic to comprehensive so that the Chicago Fire Department no longer has to reroute ambulances to other area hospitals. The Illinois Department of Public Health granted it the comprehensive emergency department designation earlier in February.
“One of the first requests we received from community residents after assuming operational control of the hospital was to allow ambulances to return to the emergency room,” Insight CEO Atif Bawahab said in a news release. “We heard the request loud and clear, and immediately began addressing staffing levels necessary to ensure we could safely handle the increase in patients once ambulance runs resumed.”
The hospital plans to hold a community celebration and ER opening ceremony in March.

Inside The Battle To Save Chicagos Historic Mercy Hospital And What Comes Next
Mercy had one of the busiest ERs in Chicago with some 50,000 visits a year, in an area where hospitals and medical services have vanished over the years. But a nursing shortage had gotten so bad, Mercys ER was downgraded and could no longer accept city ambulances.
That meant people who called 911 were taken to other hospitals, which already were slammed with patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. The next closest hospital is at least a 10-minute drive from Insight precious time, depending on a patients injury or illness.
WBEZ documented the frenzy last fall, and traced where ambulances that most often went to Mercy had to go instead.
According to a federal inspection obtained by WBEZ, for 15 days in late January to early February in 2021, Mercys ER was at times short up to six nurses during shifts. At one point, there were dozens of patients waiting to be treated or waiting for a bed upstairs because they needed to be hospitalized.
The deficiencies are so serious they constitute an immediate threat to patient health and safety, Anna Olson, a branch manager at the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, wrote to Mercys CEO on Feb. 10, 2021.
The city ambulance transports stopped. They were estimated to make up about 25% of patients who came to Mercy, the inspection report said.
This was a sign that Mercys doors were closing fast. Mercys parent company was in the middle of closing the hospital before ultimately selling to Insight for $1.

Doctors Order Medications Through A Computer
Hospitals can use Computerized Physician Order Entry systems to order medications for patients in the hospital, instead of writing out prescriptions by hand. Good CPOE systems alert the doctor if they try to order a medication that could cause harm, such as prescribing an adult dosage for a child. CPOE systems help to reduce medication errors in the hospital.

Falls Causing Broken Hips
Patients in the hospital, especially those who are older or have weaker bones, are at risk of breaking their hip if they fall. Broken hips can delay a patientâs recovery time, require longer hospital stays, and cause depression when patients lose their ability to move.

BRONZEVILLE Insight Hospital and Medical Center, formerly known as Mercy Hospital, has resumed receiving ambulances at its emergency department this month after a years hiatus.
The hospital at 2525 S. Michigan Ave. in Bronzeville was granted comprehensive emergency department designation last month by the Illinois Department of Public Health, and the Chicago Fire Department has already added it to its routes, said fire department spokesman Larry Langford.
The move will relieve some of the burden taken on by the University of Chicago Medical Center while the Bronzeville hospital was unable to accept ambulances, Langford said.
Insight expects to serve more patients with the change.
A community celebration and emergency room opening ceremony are planned for early March.

Ambulances from the Chicago Fire Department are once again transporting critically ill and injured patients to the emergency department of Insight Hospital & Medical Center in Bronzeville on the Near South Side.
Those ambulance rides stopped about a year ago in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic during a dire nursing shortage in the hospitals ER.
Insight had been working to restore city ambulance services ever since the company bought Mercy Hospital, which was the oldest chartered hospital in Chicago, in the 11th hour last year. That rescue prevented the hospitals closure. The fire department resumed ambulance transports to Insight on Feb. 16, said fire department spokesperson Larry Langford.
One of the first requests we received from community residents after assuming operational control of the hospital was to allow ambulances to return to the emergency room, Insight Hospital CEO Atif Bawahab said in a statement. We heard the request loud and clear, and immediately began addressing staffing levels necessary to ensure we could safely handle the increase in patients once ambulance runs resumed.
Mercy treated mostly low-income, elderly and Black patients. But it also was part of the fabric of Chinatown and other nearby Chinese-speaking neighborhoods.
