Chicagos Lake Shore Drive Renamed To Honor Black Settler

Chicagos City Council has voted to change the name of Lake Shore Drive to the name of a Black man recognized as a key settler of the city

CHICAGO — Chicagos City Council voted Friday to change the name of Lake Shore Drive to the name of a Black man recognized as a key settler of the city.

In a compromise, aldermen voted to rename one of the city’s iconic roads to Jean Baptiste Point DuSable Lake Shore Drive. DuSable, a native of Haiti, is considered Chicagos first permanent, non-indigenous settler. He had a successful trading post in the late 1700s. He died in 1818. Chicago was incorporated as a town in 1833 and as a city four years later.

South Side Alderman Donald Moore proposed changing the name of the ribbon of concrete along Lake Michigan to DuSable Drive two years ago after a riverboat tour of the city during which he claimed DuSables name wasnt mentioned.

Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa said the lack of proper honor for Black leaders has a harmful impact on Black children. Naming the road for him is a small but important step to addressing racial injustice, Ramirez-Rosa said.

Moores initial proposal to get rid of the Lake Shore Drive name entirely was opposed by Mayor Lori Lightfoot. An opposing alderman noted getting rid of Lake Shore Drive name would require a time-consuming and costly fix for Chicago voters and have costly implications for businesses, police and fire.

Tylin Was Responsible For Designing The Burnham Park Section Of The South Lake Shore Drive Reconstruction Project In Chicago Illinois

Man driving on Chicagos DuSable Lake Shore Drive shot multiple times

Located immediately adjacent to the shore of Lake Michigan, South Lake Shore Drive functions as a major arterial from the south side of Chicago to the downtown area, carrying more than 115,000 vehicles per day. The total reconstruction projected extended from just north of the I-55 interchange to Marquette Drive to the south. The project was completed for the Chicago Department of Transportation.

South Lake Shore Drive functions as both a major transportation route and as a park roadway, passing through historic Burnham and Jackson Parks. The purpose of the project was to provide safer and movement efficient movement through the busy corridor while removing many expressway-type features to make it more consistent with the park setting.

TYLins Burnham Park section extended from 55th Street to the south to 23rd Street to the north. The firms design for the section prioritized enhancing the public and civic realm of the lakefront parks and providing a solution that was cost-effective and maintainable. The Phase I study conducted by Illinois Department of Transportation served as the basis for the design.

The overall proposed scope of improvements included complete pavement replacement of the six- to eight-lane roadway, with moderate vertical and horizontal modifications. Bridge work included reconstructing the existing 31st Street bridge over South Lake Shore Drive, rehabilitating the Oakwood Boulevard bridge, and replacing the existing pedestrian underpass at 55th Street.

UPTOWN Plans to overhaul the northern leg of DuSable Lake Shore Drive are coming into focus as city and state officials unveiled five redesign proposals under consideration for the massive project.

The city and states transportation agencies have worked since 2013 on the Redefine the Drive plan to reconstruct DuSable Lake Shore Drive from Grand to Hollywood avenues. Much of the road was built in the 1930s. Though it has been repaved and widened, many of its bridges and tunnels are deteriorating.

Lofty plans for the redesign have been floated in recent years, including tunneling DuSable Drive under Oak Street Beach or adding acres of lakefront space to help smooth out its infamous S-curve.

View on Lake Shore Drive , Chicago

Lake Shore Drive in Chicago is the prettiest extended stretch of urban parkway in America. It’s bordered for most of its 15-plus miles by green space, beaches and Lake Michigan on the east and by a mix of parkland, skyscrapers and luxury apartments on the west. This expressway-with-some-stoplights is where Chicagoans bring new visitors who, until they get here, imagine the city as just another old, gray, concrete-and-steel metropolis in the Midwest. The best way to experience Lake Shore Drive is by driving south to north.

The Lakefront Trail

The Lakefront Trail gets a little congested, especially on good-weather weekends, when bikers compete for space with joggers, walkers, pram pushers, skaters and gawkers. But the view makes it all worth it. The paved pathway hugs the Lake Michigan shoreline , and for the strong of leg and flat of stomach, there’s no better way to enjoy the route. Rather than fight it, just go with the flow.
