I Almost Always Enjoy My Trips To Chicago
I almost always enjoy my trips to Chicago. The main city “loop” areas feel reasonably safe, clean and have plenty of energy with shops, restaurants and the bustle of humanity. On my last two visits this year , I saw a marked decline in all of those things. While I never felt truly unsafe, there was just not the same energy. More than half of the restaurants and shops are shuttered, not having survived the city’s strict COVID lock-downs. It seemed like any place that could be used as a makeshift shelter was packed with homeless people. More than once I observed people using the doorway alcove of a closed business as a “bathroom”. Grant Park, which is usually full of life, felt empty and desolate. So many restaurants are closed or only serving take-out, it was difficult to find good places to eat. We ended up going to Fulton Market to a few more open restaurants. A visit the the corner Walgreens for a few essentials was horrible. The shelves were less than half stocked and the checkout line snaked through the entire store. It felt like being in a third-world communist country where everything is rationed. Overall, Chicago has lost much of its energy and vibe. I am sure this is much like the rest of the country attempting to recover from COVID lockdowns and a lack of available workers, but being a large city. Being a large city, these problems are greatly amplified in Chicago.

Where You’ll Want To Wait
Nightly hotel rates decline an average of 13 percent in big cities, including Boston, New York, San Francisco, and Chicago, in the two weeks leading up to check in, Hopper data shows.
“There’s a much larger supply of hotel rooms,” Damodaran explains. “If they’re not filled by the weekend, hotels will try to offer last-minute deals.”
For example, in Chicago, you can expect to pay an average of $150 a night if you book 40 days out. Wait until the week before a trip, and that figure drops to around $125 a night. In Boston, booking six months early can mean paying more than $250 a night. Book a week ahead of travel, and expect to face a more reasonable $150-per-night bill. In New York, early birds booking six months early can expect to pay almost $100 a night more than their procrastinating counterparts who wait until the days leading up to a trip.
The Savings Could Be Negligible
The average savings in booking a room 15 days versus four months out was 13%. Sure, thats $260 saved on a $2,000 hotel budget , but keep in mind that 13% is an average, and some savings are going to be much smaller .
Dont discount the headaches you may encounter for procrastinating, either. The hotel you want might already be sold out. Or it might have rooms available, but only the larger suites with views, which are going to be more expensive anyway.

You Might Be Able To Book In Advance And Rebook Later
Hotel cancellation policies have always generally been pretty flexible, and theyve only gotten more so since the pandemic.
Most Hilton hotels allow you to change or cancel up to 24 hours before your arrival day. While Hilton is on the generous end of cancellation policies, its not uncommon to see free cancellations made 48 or 72 hours in advance.
Other brands offer flexible cancellation policies, but only if you have status. For example, if you have World of Hyatt elite status, you can cancel your reservation up to 24 hours in advance of check-in at most properties.
At those hotels and others with similarly flexible cancellation policies it might be worth it to book the room as early as possible. Then, periodically check the rates. If they drop lower than what you paid, you can always cancel and rebook.
Chicago Is A Great City
Chicago is a great city – highly recommend a visit for at least 3 nights. The architecture tour is a must – try to do the evening tour, as the city looks fabulous at dusk/ night. The Gangster free walking tour is also worth doing and Lou Malnati’s pizzas are great. The Carbide and Carbon building is very stylish and perfect for a drink or dinner. The Bean, Lake Michigan and the Riverwalk are also worth seeing/ doing and the 360 tower gives spectacular views of the city.

This summer, many Americans are choosing domestic vacations, crowding everything from roads to beaches to national parks to, you guessed it, hotels.
Miami has been among the most popular destinations in the U.S., so much so that Hopper recommends travelers book Miami hotel rooms two to three months in advance. If you’re heading to Miami before then, Damodaran suggests looking for options further from the beach. “You’ll find better availability and better prices inland,” he said.
Still, even a last-minute hotel room in Miamia city with a large volume and variety of hotelswill set you back less than a last-minute booking in Sedona, Ariz.
“It’s such a popular leisure destination with a very limited supply,” Damodaran says of the gorgeous desert town. “Those hotel rooms get booked up really quickly because of low inventory, so prices are much higher for last-minute bookings.” Travelers booking a room within a week of their arrival in Sedona should expect to spend about $400 a night, based on Hopper’s data. That’s more than the approximately $300 a night average price for a last-minute hotel booking in Miami.
For travelers struggling to commit to a room months ahead of a trip, Hopper recently introduced a price freeze service that allows travelers to pay a fee to guarantee specific rates for future bookings.

Double-check the fine print because theres a good chance you can book and lock in a rate now, then cancel and rebook later if the rate drops.
