Bears’ Khalil Herbert: Could Return This Season
Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said Wednesday that he doesn’t believe Herbert is dealing with a season-ending injury, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
The Bears placed Herbert on injured reserve Tuesday after the running back was forced out of Sunday’s loss to the Lions after he suffered the injury in question on his final kickoff return of the day. The move to IR makes Herbert ineligible to play until Week 16, but Eberflus is apparently hopeful that the running back can make it back to action at some point during the final three weeks of the season. While Herbert is out of commission, top back David Montgomery stands to see increased opportunities, and Trestan Ebner should step up as his top backup starting with Sunday’s game at Atlanta.
Ranking The Chicago Bears 2023 Offseason Needs And Where To Fill Them
The Chicago Bears have really started to turn a corner when it comes to the offense. This team is finding new ways to use Justin Fields despite a lack of superior talent around him at key positions. Id argue that he has a solid wide receiver in Darnell Mooney and the running backs are toward the top of the league as well. The offensive line is lacking in certain spots though and we will have to see what Chase Claypool brings to the table. The point is, he needs a few more key teammates.
Its just past the middle of the 2022 NFL season, but it is never too late to be looking into the future. The Chicago Bears are 3-7 on the year, and despite these moral victories, they dont look to be a playoff team. As a general manager, Ryan Poles always needs to be thinking big picture. He cannot get caught up in only focusing on the team now. We saw just how good he is at this when he traded away Robert Quinn and Roquan Smith while also trading for Chase Claypool.
Bears Sign De Taco Charlton Cut Lb Aj Klein
The Bears acquired some depth on the defensive line today, signing former first-round pick Taco Charlton from the Saints practice squad, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. Additionally, the Bears activated linebacker Matthew Adams from injured reserve.
Charlton has had a rollercoaster of a career through six seasons. Hes coming off of a down season in Pittsburgh where the Steelers barely used him. As a rotational pass rusher, Charlton only played more than half of the teams defensive snaps twice in the season. In his lone start, he earned his only half-sack and a quarterback hit. In the only other game that saw him play more than half the Steelers snaps, he recorded his only other quarterback hit of the season.
Charlton hasnt played a full season since his rookie year for the Cowboys in 2017. Since then, injuries and inactive periods for other non-disclosed reasons have kept him off the field for weeks at a time. He signed with the Saints early in the offseason but was cut and signed to the practice squad at the roster cut deadline.
Adams is a reserve linebacker and core special teamer for the Bears. He was placed on IR after suffering a calf injury in the teams Week 5 loss to the Vikings. His return adds some depth to the linebacking position behind starters Jack Sanborn, Joe Thomas, and Nicholas Morrow.

Latest Draft Projections Have Chicago Bears Picking Much Higher
Everybody is ecstatic the Chicago Bears may finally have a quarterback. Justin Fields has done tremendous work over the past six weeks. His passer rating jumped from 58 to 99. Hes only thrown three interceptions compared to 10 touchdowns and has run for almost 600 yards. Defenses have no answers for him. Unfortunately, these borderline-Superman efforts havent been enough to cover up how bad the rest of the roster is. The Bears were the first team to score at least 29 points in three straight games and lose all three in NFL history.
That should help explain how depleted this roster is. The defense cant stop anybody. Worse still, the Bears just lost top running back Khalil Herbert to a hip injury. So now the bread and butter of their offense is weakened. To top it off, their schedule starts to get worse after Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. They have the Jets and Packers before the bye week, then Philadelphia, Buffalo, Detroit, and Minnesota to finish things up. Its little wonder new draft projections from The Athletic have the Bears picking higher than their current 6th overall spot.
Bills Claim Lb Aj Klein
The Bills added a familiar face off waivers today. The team announced that theyve claimed linebacker A.J. Klein off waivers from the Bears. The veteran was waived by Chicago yesterday. To make room on the roster, Buffalo placed wideout Jake Kumerow on injured reserve.
Klein spent two seasons with the Bills between 2020 and 2021. He had a career year during his first season in Buffalo, finishing with a career-high 75 tackles, five sacks, and two forced fumbles in 16 games . He saw a reduced role in 2021, starting only four of his 15 appearances, but he still finished with 35 tackles. Klein also got into five playoff games during his first stint with the organization, collecting another seven tackles.
The 31-year-old has bounced around a bit since getting released by the Bills back in March. He joined the Giants practice squad in October before getting signed to Baltimores active roster. He was later sent to Chicago in the Roquan Smith trade before getting waived a few weeks later. Hes totaled five tackles in four games this year.
Kumerow has seen time in six games for the Bills this season, hauling in four catches for 64 yards while also playing a role on special teams. The veteran suffered an ankle injury during Buffalos Week 10 loss to the Vikings, and now hell be sidelined for at least the next four games.

The Chicago Bears Have Some Solid Options In Free Agency And The 2023 Draft
Poles knew that Quinn and Smith were not going to work out long-term. One was an aging veteran who was going to become a salary cap casualty. The other is a rising star who plays a devalued position and was becoming an off-the-field distraction as he demanded more money than his position deserves. The player he traded for can help Justin Fields develop, but would easily be a top free agent acquisition in 2023 if his contract expired at the end of the season.
The big reason here for the Bears issues is that the defense has really struggled. The team has struggled to stop the run specifically, but they also allowed Tua Tagovailoa to throw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns. It should be noted that many teams struggle to stop the tandem of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, however, what the Hell happened vs the Lions?
Bears’ Taco Charlton: Poached By Bears
Chicago signed Charlton off the Saints’ practice squad Wednesday, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Charlton hasn’t yet made his 2022 season debut, but he could get a chance to contribute for the Bears as early as Sunday’s contest against the Falcons. The 2017 first-round pick logged 11 appearances with the Steelers last year.

The Chicago Bears Will Be In Rare Territory If That Happens
The last time this team landed the 2nd overall pick without needing a trade was way back in 1970. That was the year they lost the coin toss with Pittsburgh, costing them Terry Bradshaw. Thankfully the organization wont need a quarterback this time around. Recent history says the Bears stand a very good chance of landing a blue-chip player at that spot if its not a quarterback. Four of the last five #2 picks were Saquon Barkley, Nick Bosa, Chase Young, and Aidan Hutchinson.
Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus would be thrilled to end up with somebody like that. It comes down to how the rest of the schedule plays out. The Chicago Bears face stiff competition for that spot. Eight other teams have only three wins this year. Las Vegas sits ahead of them at 2-7, while Houston is the heavy favorite to claim #1 overall at 1-7-1. Its hard to win in the NFL, but people overlook how hard it is to lose too. The Bears may steal a couple of games down the stretch with how Fields is playing. It should be an exciting race to track.
Bears’ Cole Kmet: Dealing With Thigh Issue
Kmet missed Wednesday’s practice due to a thigh injury.
Along with quarterback Justin Fields, Kmet has been on fire the past three games, gathering in 11 of 15 targets for 126 yards and five touchdowns during that stretch. His five touchdowns on the season places Kmet tied for second among true tight ends in the NFL, trailing only Travis Kelce . There’s no telling if Kmet’s current health concern threatens his availability for Sunday’s game in Atlanta, but his status will continue to be watched as the week goes on.

Two significant factors came out of Monday’s meeting: the team acknowledged it will be asking for a public-private partnership to make the move happen, and the village clarified that it will not allow anything to happen without proof that it will recoup those costs and then some.
The village board is expected to vote on a pre-development framework, which lays out how the two sides will move forward.
The Bears passed the halfway point with reason to feel theres hope, with Fields progressing and the offense starting to put up points at a rate that hasnt been seen in Chicago in a long time.
Showing off his dynamic athleticism and improved passing, Justin Fields went toe-to-toe with Tua Tagovailoa on Sunday and nearly led the Chicago Bears to a comeback win.
Fields ran for 178 yards, the most by an NFL quarterback in a regular-season game.
It’s game day today! Fans are already tailgating in preparation for the Chicago Bears to take on the Miami Dolphins at Soldier Field. The Bears Mobile Five, tailgating hall-of-famers going on 39 years, are grilling up and smoking tasty treats.
The Chicago Bears activated left guard Cody Whitehair on Friday.
Chicago could be in for some rough Sundays, particularly on defense after two big trades in the past two weeks. But the offense is at least showing progress.
Ryan Poles thought he inherited a potential cornerstone player for the defense in linebacker Roquan Smith when the Chicago Bears hired him as their general manager in January.
Bears’ Cole Kmet: Returns As Limited Participant
Kmet was a limited practice participant Thursday.
One day removed from being held out Wednesday due to a thigh injury, Kmet returned to the field and managed to log some reps. Ultimately, Friday’s practice report will reveal if he’ll carry a designation into the weekend ahead of Sunday’s contest in Atlanta. If he’s able to suit up, Kmet will be looking to keep up his hot streak, which has amounted to an 11-126-5 line on 15 targets over the last three games.

Justin Fields Continues To Signal He Could Be Right Qb For Bears
Fields 61-yard scoring scramble was the longest run by a Bears quarterback and the highlight of a record performance in a 35-32 loss to Miami last week. Hell try to build on it when the Detroit Lions visit on Sunday.
Justin Fields 178-yard rushing performance now stands as the highest rushing total by any NFL quarterback in a regular-season game in NFL history, surpassing Michael Vicks previous single-game record of 173 rushing yards.
Bears’ Matt Adams: Activated From Ir
The Bears activated Adams from injured reserve Wednesday, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Adams resumed practicing last week, and Chicago has seen enough to now bring him back to the active roster. That puts the 26-year-old on track to resume handling a depth role on defense beginning with Sunday’s matchup against the Falcons.

Bears’ N’keal Harry: Dealing With Illness
Harry was listed as a DNP on the Bears’ injury report Thursday.
Harry was ruled a healthy scratch ahead of Chicago’s Week 10 loss to the Lions and did not carry any injury designation on the team’s injury report Wednesday. While the nature and severity of this ailment are still unknown, the 24-year-old will have two full days to get healthy before Sunday’s game against the Falcons. Harry has caught four of five targets for 44 yards and touchdown over three games this season, and he’ll likely play a deep-reserve role when available moving forward.
