An individual who has a legal issue with merit must pass a MEANS TEST in order to qualify for free legal help in the State of Illinois.

The means test will determine if a person has a low income or if the maximum monthly income income is currently below the national average for the number of people in the household or maybe no income at all that would allow to receive legal assistance for free by an attorney referred by the law society of the state.

Areas of Law: Confidentiality and HIV/AIDS testing, Civil Rights, Debt Collection, Discrimination, Employment, Estate Planning, Immigration, Insurance, Public Benefits, and HIV/AIDS law pertaining to young adults.

Good to Know: To be eligible for assistance you must have a legal issue based on your HIV status, real or perceived, and be a Cook County resident. John Gallo is the CEO and Executive Director of Legal Aid Chicago. Prior to joining Legal Aid Chicago in 2017, John was a partner at Sidley Austin LLP for twenty-one years. He was Firmwide Co-Chair of Sidleys White Collar Practice from 2010 to 2017, and Head of Litigation in Sidleys Chicago Office from 2014 to 2017. While at Sidley, he represented institutional clients in criminal and civil matters before federal and state agencies and conducted internal investigations for those clients in response to allegations of wrongdoing. In 2005, John created Sidleys Capital Litigation Project, designed to ensure that inmates incarcerated on Alabamas death row had effective legal representation, perhaps for the first time since their arrest. In connection with this project, In 2007, the American Bar Association gave Sidley the Pro Bono Publico Award for the firms work on this project. From 2000 to 2017, John served as Trial Counsel to the Illinois Judicial Inquiry Board, the body responsible for investigating allegations of misconduct by Illinois judicial officers. In that capacity, John was responsible both for investigating complaints and prosecuting cases before the Illinois Courts Commission.
