They Went Through Difficult Times And Lineup Changes

With a newly shortened name, Chicago continued releasing albums at a rate of one per year. With hit after hit, it seemed the band was sailing smoothly into success. Some band members, however, felt as if their musical ambitions were being curtailed, first by Guercio and second by their newfound fame. According to AllMusic, most of their biggest hits were ballads sung by Cetera. Guercio was also a very controlling manager whom the band believed might have taken advantage of them financially. So Chicago split with Guercio.

Then tragedy struck. The Chicago Tribune reported Kath died of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound, which paralyzed the group both creatively and emotionally. Ultimate Classic Rock wrote Kath suffered from drug and alcohol problems. But his death in 1978 had nothing to do with his substance abuse issues. A lifelong gun enthusiast, he was at a crewmember’s house playing around with pistols, playing Russian Roulette. Unfortunately, one of the firearms was loaded. He died instantly.

Chicago struggled to find Kath’s replacement, the Chicago Tribune said, and it took years before the band could find a suitable new member in Bill Champlin.

New Studio And Live Recordings

In 2001, the Buckinghams were part of the Solid Gold 60s Tour along with Tommy James, the Turtles, Gary Puckett, and the Grass Roots. PBS featured the Buckinghams on The Sixties Pop Rock Reunion in 2004.

In January 2005, the Buckinghams performed at the Twilight on the Prairie Ball for one of President George W. Bush‘s InauguralBalls in Washington, DC. In 2007, the Buckinghams signed with national label Fuel Records to release their studio CD Reaching Back, which included eight new original songs written by Giammarese and new recordings of five of their top hits. A second CD, Standing Room Only , was also released on the Fuel Label. XM Radio recorded the Buckinghams in concert for their XM Performance Series on the “60s on 6” channel. The Buckinghams’ music from yesterday and today remains in regular rotation on classic rock stations in U.S. formats as well as satellite radio and streaming Internet radio stations.

The Buckinghams released their first Christmas album on the BML label, The Joy of Christmas, in November 2008. In December 2008, they debuted the single “Have a Little Faith” on WGN-TV in Chicago.

In 2009, the Buckinghams performed at the Bipartisan Illinois Agricultural Ball for the inauguration of President Barack Obama. The same year, Sony reissued the Buckinghams’ first three albums for sale as digital downloads as part of their Legacy Music Series.

Seraphine was succeeded by Tris Imboden, a longtime drummer with Kenny Loggins and former session drummer with Peter Cetera. Imboden made his first appearance on the 1991 album Twenty 1 with a fragment of band’s logo, which yielded an eleven-week stretch on the Billboard 200, a peak at No. 66, and the song “Chasin’ the Wind” which peaked at No. 39. Twenty 1 would be their last released album of original music for fifteen years.

The band was recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on July 23, 1992.

LEXINGTON, Ky. What started off as a standard class presentation led to a University of Kentucky College of Communication and Information alum finding a place for himself with one of the longest-running and best-selling American rock bands of all time.

George Cranwell, a 2021 integrated strategic communication graduate, joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Chicago shortly after earning his degree from UK. He now serves as the bands assistant production manager. How he got there though directly ties back to his time in the classroom.

During his senior year in an ISC event planning class, Cranwell got to meet the man who would help land him with Chicago, Beau Loendorf. As the co-founder and lead coordinator of the wedding planning business Big and Little Events, Loendorf gave a presentation to Cranwells class. Cranwell was so impressed with the presentation that he jumped at the opportunity when Loendorf was looking for a Big and Little Events intern.

While serving as a Big and Little Events intern during his final semester of a five-year journey at UK, Loendorf approached Cranwell with yet another employment experience. Along with heading up Big and Little Events, Loendorf is also the director of VIP programming and touring planning for Chicago. After being impressed by Cranwells energy, passion for helping others and openness to learn, Loendorf offered the college senior a summer trial run with the band.

Its been a turbulent week for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Chicago.

On Friday, leader singer and bassist Jeff Coffey announced his exit from the group. The news came two days after longtime drummer Tris Imboden said he was leaving the band.

I am coming to you today with a heavy heart to announce that I am also leaving Chicago, . In fact, we both played our last show earlier this week.

Chicagos last concert was Jan. 13 at Parx Casino in Bensalem, PA.

Coffey was a member of the band less than two years. He began touring with Chicago in May 2016, but wasnt officially welcomed into the group until October of that year.

Coffey joined Chicago to replace Jason Scheff, who had handled vocals and bass for more than three decades after founding member Peter Cetera left to pursue a solo career in 1985.

Coffey, 50, cited personal reasons and the bands rigorous concert schedule for his decision.

he scale here leans more and more towards heavy touring, with NO time for anything else, Coffey said. It wasnt the right balance for me.

Imboden noted similar concerns on Wednesday when he announced he was leaving the group.

t this point in my life I no longer want to commit to 9 to 10 months out of every year being on the road, . This in no small way is because I have finally found and married the love of my life, Mary, and I want to share more of my life with her.

Imboden wed last year.

Coffey is being replaced in the band by two people.
