During the Spanish American War, it was noted that many of the best Navy’s best sailors were originating in the Midwest and, in response, the Naval Station was built along Lake Michigan where it remains today.
During World War I, more than 9,000 sailors enlisted at Great Lakes in one month. By the end of the war, over 125,000 sailors had trained at Great Lakes. During World War II, at least one in four Naval battles included sailors who had trained at Great Lakes Naval Station. The decades following the Second World War, the Naval Station expanded to its present 1,628 acre facility with over 1,100 buildings.
Base Realignment And Closure Commission Decision
Towards the end and following the end of the Cold War, BRAC Commissions were established to shed what the Department of Defense and the U.S. Congress considered to be excess military units and infrastructure. The 1993 BRAC identified NAS Glenview for closure no later than 30 September 1995, along with corresponding inactivation or transfer of its assigned squadrons and other units.

This Is The Largest Military Base In Illinois
- Samuel Stebbins, 24/7 Wall St. via The Center Square
The U.S. defense budget – by far the largest of any country in the world – is the subject of regular controversy. But while multi-billion dollar weapons development programs that blow past budgets and deadlines will always be subject to political scrutiny, much of America’s annual military spending is less controversial. Nearly one-quarter of the $718 billion in U.S. military spending in fiscal 2021 went to pay and retirement benefits of service members.
Though there are thousands of active-duty U.S. military personnel deployed abroad and on ships at sea, the vast majority of American troops are stationed at bases within the United States. Across the country, there are hundreds of military bases that are collectively home to over 1 million active-duty service members and their families. These domestic military installations vary considerably in personnel capacity, and many of them have populations equivalent to that of a mid-size city.
According to the Department of Defense’s report Demographics Profile of the Military Community for 2019 – the most recent year of comprehensive data by base – Naval Station Great Lakes, located 30 miles from Chicago, ranks as the largest military base in Illinois by troop count.
The base, run by the Navy, is home to 15,726 active-duty service members. Including military family members and other dependents, there are a total of 21,875 people at the base.
