What Does Otat Provide
Everything! All we ask of our foster homes is to give love, patience, and understanding to their foster pet. In an effort to make fostering as easy as possible and ensure that our foster homes have everything they need, we provide the following:
- Training Support
- Free doggie daycare or dog walking if you have longer work days
- Free boarding should you need to go out of town while fostering
As with our adoptive homes, we always try to the best of our ability to match the foster animal to the foster home. We will always take into consideration you, your lifestyle, and other members of your household, before asking you to foster a specific pet. All dogs and cats are temperament tested prior to heading to your home so we typically have a good idea of each animals personality and needs.

Turning The One Tail Adoption Center Into A Home
We first sat down with Heather, the Director and head honcho behind One Tail at a Time, in April. After running this Chicago nonprofit as a foster based rescue for years, they took a leap and signed the lease of an adorable house in the Bucktown neighborhood. This house would be their soon-to-be Adoption Center, a meeting ground where families would embrace the pup into a forever family. It would be a place that shelter dogs could call a temporary home, a place where they would await the love of their life to whisk them away! There would be events and volunteer gatherings, and it would be where all the happy lives.
The bones of this house were good, but it needed a spit shining and a good dose of love. Our time with OTAT began the day that Heather asked us if wed be able or willing to volunteer a hand towards a design plan we couldnt say yes! fast enough. Over the next few months, the One Tail Adoption Center turned into so much more than we imagined, in regards to good old dedication and no shortage of sweat. When simply asked by us and without a second thought, furniture, decor, lighting and services were overwhelmingly provided as donations from some of our favorite places to hang on the web. It was worth every email sent, every text typed and every day spent brainstorming, building and making.
PS! If youre like us, youll never tire of seeing adoptable pups finding their happy fur-ever homes. You can for your daily dose, and we promise you wont be disappointed.

Why Should You Adopt
Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.
What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?
When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.
So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
About One Tail At A Time Nfp
One Tail at a Time is a no-kill animal rescue based in the Chicagoland area. Working with a growing community of dedicated volunteers and foster homes, as well as boarding and daycare facilities, we are able to rescue animals from potential euthanasia and help lower overpopulation in area shelters. We focus on finding permanent homes for our dogs by working to match the lifestyles of potential adopters with each dog’s personality and needs. This, combined with our commitment to providing new adopters with education and support for the life of their dog, ensures that more dogs stay in their new homes permanently, reducing the number of pets that are returned to the rescue or shelters each year. All of our dogs are adopted fully vaccinated, heartworm tested, spayed or neutered, and microchipped.

Volunteers Can Help By
VOLUNTEERING AT THE ADOPTION CENTER
One Tails Adoption Center, in the heart of Chicagos Bucktown neighborhood, is a temporary home for up to 10 dogs at a time. Because our staff is small, volunteers play an important part in socializing the dogs, exercising them in our yard and outdoor runs, and of course, clean kennels . After volunteering for several shifts, volunteers are also invited to give our dogs a break from the shelter life by taking them on field trips or sleepovers.
Looking to volunteer your time through pro bono professional services? One Tail is often in need of professional services in graphic design, marketing, PR and printing, as well as dog-related services such as boarding, daycare, walking and grooming. Have another skill set you would like to donate? Send an email to.
ANIMAL TRANSPORT AND PLAYTIME
We are greatly in need of volunteers that are able to transport to / from adoption events, foster, our Ellis Clinic, etc.! In the event of urgent transportation needs OTAT may elect to reimburse for gas mileage. If you are requesting reimbursement please seek approval from OTAT staff prior to doing the transport.
DOG HANDLING AT ADOPTION EVENTS
Spending as little as a few hours on a weekend afternoon can make a difference in finding a dog his or her new home. Volunteers provide the invaluable service of handling and introducing dogs to interested families. Events are often held every weekend. View our calendar of events.

Saving Mans Best Friend One Tail At A Time
Dogs are loyal, loving companions, but some live at risk in shelters. In fact, nearly 6,000 dogs were euthanized in the city of Chicago in 2014. While volunteering for several dog rescue organizations, attorney Heather Owen saw a need for more helpso she quit her job to co-found One Tail at a Time.
One Tail at a Time is a no-kill, 5013 all-breed dog rescue that has been committed to lowering euthanasia rates in the greater Chicagoland area for the past seven and a half years. Dogs come from Chicago Animal Care and Control, shelters in the region and throughout Illinois, as well as a partner shelter in Alabama. They focus on at-risk dogs other shelters no longer have room for, no matter what their condition may be. Through the help of many volunteers, One Tail at a Time places the dogs in foster homes so they receive love before finding their forever home.
In late July, One Tail at a Time opened an adoption center, located in Chicagos Bucktown neighborhood, which offers a place for people to meet the dogs, and to adopt when they find their match.
The Chicago Community Trust sat down with Heather Owen to talk about how she progressed from a part-time to a full-time philanthropist.

CHICAGO One Tail at a Time is raising money and looking for long-term foster homes after part of is training center was damaged over the weekend.
On Sunday, the staff at the animal shelter found a portion of the ceiling had caved in, sending concrete into one of the dog kennels, according to a Facebook post. No animals or people were injured, but our space is not safe and dogs had to be immediately moved out, according to the group.
But the center will be out of commission for a while, meaning the shelter needs long-term foster homes for the dogs who would normally reside there, according to the group.
People who could foster one of the animals are asked to email Anna@onetail.org. More information about fostering through the shelter is available online.
